The Rovers' second league season of the modern era proved to be a disappointing affair after the promising events of the previous season. This was especially so, considering the fact that a number of new players had been signed, and hopes were particularly high that the team would go on to do well. In the event, the Rovers finished just sixth from the bottom of the Third Division (North), after a period where the team failed to show any sort of consistent form. A poor start with just one point from the first three games was soon forgotten when Ashington were hammered 7-3 at Belle Vue. This was particularly pleasing as the 'Colliers' had beaten the Rovers on their own ground the previous week. The next game, at Nelson, was lost, but two of the next three were won, including a five goal victory over Wigan Borough at Belle Vue. The coming weeks offered a series of excellent results - especially at home -and by early December, the Rovers were nicely placed with Tommy Keetley amongst the goals once again. The Christmas games with Bradford Park Avenue was honours shared as did the New Years Day fixture at Grimsby. January progressed with three consecutive victories, before a defeat at Halifax heralded a loss of form that beggared belief. Only one of the next ten games yielded both points, indeed, at one stage, the Rovers suffered five defeats on the trot, finding themselves descending down the table at a rate of knots. Typically, the Rovers got back on the winning trail at the most unlikely of locations by taking both points at New Brighton, who ended the season in the top three. However, this proved to be something of a false dawn, and the Rovers form only lifted marginally as the season drew to a close. The last three games of the season saw them unbeaten, with the Champions Darlington held to a draw away from home on the last day of the season. One statistic that gave the local supporters a degree of comfort was that local rivals, Rotherham County, finished rock bottom of the division, a full 11 points adrift of Tranmere Rovers. For the Rovers part, a further 7 league points would have put them as high as eighth, but their inconsistency proved to be their undoing, and their final league placing was a fair reflection of the season. The Rovers made their debut in the FA Cup proper in January 1925, following three successful qualifying games. However, their luck ran out against Norwich City at Belle Vue, and a disputed winning goal sent the Canaries singing back to Norfolk. Leading scorers: Keetley (T) 23, Campbell 7, Boardman 7 |
