With a final placing of sixth in the old Third Division North, an unbeaten home record and 77 League goals to their credit, there was much for Doncaster Rovers to enjoy during this campaign.

Having said all that, the season did not get off to the best of starts, with a heavy defeat at Gateshad on the opening day of the season. However, the first home game, against Walsall, yielded both points, although the return game with that club was lost when the teams met again seven days later.

There was a preponderance of drawn games as the season progressed, with seven of the following 11 games yielding a point on each occasion, whilst only one was lost.

The Christmas games were ushered in with an excellent 501 victory over Crewe Alexandra on Christmas Eve, but the games with Tranmere Rovers over the 27/28th produced only a point thanks to a home draw. New Year's Eve provided the Rovers with a chance to avenge their opening day defeat at Gateshead, and this they did thanks to a 3-1 scoreline.

The New Year opened with a heavy defeat at Stockport County, but two consecutive victories over Darlington and Rochdale steadied the ship, before Rovers slumped to their biggest defeat of the season at Hull City. The next away game, at Hartlepool, was also lost by a large margin, but sandwiched between these two disappointments was a pleasurable home victory over old rivals Barnsley before a gate of over 8,000.

To their credit, the Rovers showed a greater degree of consistency as the season drew to a close. Only two of the remaining 15 fixtures were lost, one of these being the very last game of the campaign at Crewe, who the Rovers had beaten so heavily earlier in the season.

Whilst the unbeaten home record - one of only four in the entire Football League that season - was something to be proud of, the away record of just four victories was altogether less impressive, and a better record on their travels could have seen them finish further up the table.

The FA Cup saw the Rovers defeat Gainsborough Trinity and Northampton Town before losing at home to Halifax Town in round three. The victory at Northampton was all the more meritorious as it was the "Cobblers" only home defeat of the season.
