The return of former favourite Alick Jeffrey to the Rovers first team, and the creation of the Rovers' club record score in an individual match, were the highlights of an otherwise average season, which saw Doncaster finish 14th in Division Four.

The Rovers made an excellent start to the new season by taking seven points from their first four League games. These included away wins at Oxford United and Stockport County, the point dropped coming in a home draw with Newport County on the opening day of the season. Oxford won the return fixture at Belle Vue in mid-September, before a poor run of results left Rovers with just three draws from the next six games.

The busy month of October saw a mixture of results, with a home win over Bradford City and a 'double' over Barrow, whilst defeats came at York City and Lincoln City. Alfie Hale, Keith Ripley and Phil Robinson scored in the win over Barrow at Belle Vue and six days later, at Holker Street, Colin Booth netted both Rovers' goals.

The run up to Christmas was similar, with the Rovers' reasonable home record being neutralised by a series of bad results away from home. The holiday games were typical of the Rovers' topsy turvy form. A three goal defeat at Southport on Boxing Day was off-set by a victory by the same margin over the same opposition just two days later. This game saw the return of former starlet Alick Jeffrey to the Rovers' first team following his injury problems of the previous decade, and subsequent stay in Australia. His appearance put 7.570 extra spectators on the 'gate, such was the interest in the old Rovers favourite.

The last week in January 1964 was the Rovers record their best ever League score when they put 10 goals past Darlington without reply. Amazingly, Jeffrey did not score in the game, although Alfie Hale headed the scorers with four goals on the day.

February brought two further home wins, either side of a heavy defeat at Brighton. A series of three draws in the next four games improved things further, before the Rovers went down by six clear goals at high-flying Carlisle United.

The remainder of the campaign typified what had gone before. An unbeaten run of four games in late March/early April was followed by four consecutive defeats, including one at Darlington, before the Rovers ended another disappointing season with a home win over Torquay United on the last day of the season.

The FA Cup earned some valuable revenue for the Rovers as they reached the third round for the first time in five seasons. Tranmere Rovers and Notts County had been dismissed in the earlier rounds before the Rovers were beaten by Bristol City in a replay at Ashton Gate, following a 2-2 draw at Belle Vue. The League Cup did not offer the same excitement with Doncaster losing their first round tie with York City, again in a replay, following another draw at home.
