Following the Rovers' disastrous relegation season of 1966/67, and a further season of consolidation in the old Fourth Division during the following campaign, hopes were high that they could make a sustained challenge for a further promotion during the 1968/69 season. Commencing with a home draw with Bradford City, the team soon got into its stride with a run of five consecutive wins during September 1968. During this time, our old rivals, Darlington, were also enjoying some good form, and when the two teams clashed at Belle Vue during October over 22,000 spectators were present to se the Quakers sneak a win via a goal to nil. This defeat came as a severe blow to the Rovers and it heralded a slump as the team won just four of their next 12 fixtures. However, the New Year saw a dramatic change in the fortunes of the club. After gaining a rather fortunate point in a draw at Lincoln, the team settled down to play with great consistency and marked their newly-found confidence with a dramatic home victory over Aldershot in February. The 'Shots' had arrived at Belle Vue vying for the top spot in the Fourth Division, and the Rovers required a victory by six clear goals to go top in their own right. On a night still fondly remembered by those who were present, the Rovers went one better and crushed the high-flying visitors 7-0. As the weeks went by, the Rovers' unbeaten run progressed, and by the time that Brentford came to Belle Cue in April, 1969, it had stretched to 18 games. The game with the 'Bees' proved to be an eventful affair for the visiting central defender, Peter Gelson, who contrived to give away two penalties and an own goal during the course of the Rovers' 5-0 victory. Strangely enough, Brentford ended the Rovers' unbeaten run shortly afterwards when they won the return fixture at Griffin Park, thus ending the Rovers' record of 20 matches unbeaten over four months. Promotion was assured with a comfortable home victory over Port Vale, and with just two games to play, the Championship was there to be won. A dreary goalless draw with Workington at Belle Vue, followed by an excellent win at Grimsby Town, proved to be sufficient to bring the Fourth Division Championship to Doncaster for the second time in four seasons. The Rovers' league success was reflected in their FA Cup exploits, as they beat Notts County and Southport in rounds one and two, before losing to Liverpool at Anfield, but not before giving their illustrious hosts a hell of a fright. The Football league Cup did not offer the same excitement, however, and the Rovers lost out to Peterborough United in the opening round. A notable departure during this season was that of Alick Jeffrey, who moved to Lincoln City early in the New Year. He still ended the season as the Rovers' leading goalscorer! Leading scorers (league): Jeffrey 12, Regan 10, Johnson 8, Watson 8. |
