Penney proud of players

Whilst Rovers may have missed out on a third successive promotion this season, Dave Penney believes that his squad ahve done themselves proud this season, with many players making the successful step up from playing in the Conference to League One.
Penney said: "I've been delighted with the way that most of the players have stepped up this season because I would say that 50% of them have been with us since our Conference days. Tim Ryan, our left-back, has been with us six years and has just been named our players' player of the year so that shows just how well he has adjusted."

Jones future uncertain

With the news that Scottish club Clyde are set to go part-time next season, the future of most of their players, including former Rovers striker Graeme Jones, is uncertain. With a manager still to be appointed after Billy Reid quit to join Hamilton Academical (which names ex-Rover Colin Cramb amongst their squad), reports coming out of the club suggest that most of the players are unhappy with the terms offered to re-sign. Three have already left, with the club asking the players to remain full-time, but releasing them to supplement the reduced terms on offer by working for other employers.
Former Rover Jones signed for Clyde on New Years Day after a brief stay at Bury this season.

Wrexham auction

We are all aware that Wrexham were relegated this season after having ten points deducted by the Football League after going into administration. They now face a battle for survival, with an eviction notice being served on the club to vacate their Racecourse ground. Whilst the administrators have assured fans that the club will continue to play at the ground for next season, the Werxham Supporters' Trust are continuing to campaign to save the club. To that end, they asked every one of the 92 Football League and Premiership clubs to donate a signed shirt, and were overwhelmed by the fact that every single club donated to their cause. This unique collection of signed shirts will be auctioned at Sotheby's on 18th May, which will either help the Supporters' Trust to buy the club, or for the administrator to continue to run the club until a buyer is found.
More details can be found on an article on www.vikingsc.co.uk.

Former Doncaster Rovers player Sean Joyce has added another title to his already impressive managerial career at Bidford Town, who won the Screwfix Direct Western League championship for the third time in four season. Bideford, nicknamed "The Robins", were crowned as champions on Saturday despite their season not finishing until tomorrow. Joyce has also been voted as the Premier Division "Manager of the Year" this season. Roberts - will he, won't he?

Reports surfaced from official channels yesterday that Steve Roberts, the Wrexham central defender and brother of Rovers' striker Neil Roberts, has agreed to sign for Doncaster Rovers on 1st July.
Despite the news appearing on Rovers' official web site yesterday, the news disappeared during the afternoon, with the Wrexham official site suggesting that any such reports were somewhat premature. Wrexham boss, Denis Smith, said: "I know that Doncaster are interested in Steve, but I was speaking to the player only yesterday and advised him to wait until he had seen our offer, which will be with him by Friday, before deciding which course of action to take. Steve is under contact until July and has a month after receiving our offer to make his mind up, so there is no real reason for him to make an early decision. I would be a little surprised if he didn't contact me with his decision before making it public, so for the moment we'll just have to wait and see."
The BBC are still reporting that Roberts will sign on 1st July, and has agreed terms with Rovers.

Penney: we learned by mistakes

Rovers boss Dave Penney thinks that Doncaster's first season in League One served as an invaluable learning curve for his side after their promotion in the previous campaign. After some heavy away defeats early in the season, Penney feels that his players learned from their mistakes, showing much more defensive reslience later in the season.
"We've had some good games this year and I think we've got used to this division. Last year when we went 1-0 down we would try and quickly get back in the game and would usually do so. But at the start of the season when we tried to do that in League One we found that we were soon letting in more goals at the other end, so I think we've learnt to tighten up."

Two old boys victims of Chester cull

New Chester City manager Keith Curle has wielded the axe on his underperforming squad after assessing the side during the closing stages of last season.
With just nine members of a 29-player first team squad to be retained, Chester skipper, former Rovers midfielder Paul Carden is one of thos who will not be offered new terms for next season. Former Rovers winger Andy Watson also appears to be on the way out of the club, with his name not appearing on the list of retained players, although his future had already been put in doubt due to an on-going knee problem, limiting his first team appearances last season to just part of an LDV Vans Trophy game late in 2004.

Chester think about Gregg

Chester City are reported to have been quoted a six figure sum for Rovers striker Gregg Blundell, who has been targetted by City for the last few months. City chairman, Stephen Vaughan, has been quoted by Cheshire's "Daily Post" as saying ""I will have to sit down with the manager in the next few days and decide whether or not we should take the matter further. "Gregg would enhance our squad, so we will have to discuss whether our valuation matches Doncaster's."
Chester are due to announce a major clear-out today, with new manager reported to be about to release 20 of the 29 players he inherited when he recently joined the club. Curle said: "I am giving free transfers to 20 of the squad, some are still contracted to the club, so if they can't get fixed up with another club next season, we will offer them a financial package."

Rovers trio have mixed fortunes

Rovers after Southwell striker?

We have found out that, according to the "Southwell Advertiser", Rovers may be set to offer Southwell City striker Ben Saunders a contract after coming to the attention of chief scout Dave Blakey. Penney aims for better next year

Rovers manager Dave Penney has set his side the challenge of improving on this year's tenth place finish for next season. Whilst Rovers have not finished higher than eleventh since 1958 until this year's tenth place, Penney says: "Next year we hope to finish higher. Luton have won the championship on merit and they have set the standard for everyone else next season. We are aiming to bring 10 new players in during the summer and it's a matter of adding some quality and finding the right ones."
He also spoke of his hopes that some more of the youth side will eventually break through into the first team. Of teenage substitutes Adam Brown and Craig Nelthorpe, he added: "Neither of them looked out of place and it gives them a taste of League football as well as keeping them hungry for next season."

Around the goals

With most of the non-league campaigns having finished the week before, this week's goal review is somewhat shorter than usual.
In the Conference North, Jamie Paterson scored Kettering Town's first goal at home to Altrincham in their play-off game, but his side eventually went down to a 3-2 defeat in extra time.
Less welcome news came with Kidderminster Harrier's last game of the season before their relegation to the Nationwide Conference. Former Rovers midfielder John McGrath finished the season off on a low note as he was sent off sixteen minutes before the end of the game.

Guy - the runaway winner

Rovers' two-goal hero from Saturday, Lewis Guy, has won the last "Man of the Match" vote by a convincing margin, winning almost two of every three votes cast. The leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Lewis Guy (63.75%)
2 Paul Green (11.25%)
The remainder of the votes were spread evenly, with Craig Nelthorpe, Nick Fenton, Leo Fortune-West and Michael McIndoe winning most of the remaining votes cast. Thank you very much to everyone who has voted - not only for this match, but throughout the season, with a record number of votes being cast this season. We will be calculating the "Player of the Season" shortly, and announcing the results during the close season.

Penney - we proved doubters wrong

Dave Penney admitted after Saturday's final game of the season against Luton Town that he was disappointed to have missed out on the League One play-off places, but was delighted that his playres had proved the doubters wrong. With many tipsters having Rovers down for relegation at the start of the season, Rovers have occupied a top half place for virtually all of the season.
Penney said: "Everyone tipped us for relegation at the start of the season but we've been in and around the play-off positions for most of the campaign. We are disappointed (at missing out on the play-offs) and if we had improved our home form then we could have made it. We drew 11 of our games at home and only lost two so if we'd managed to turn a few of those draws into wins then we would have been up there but I think that all managers would say that."

Coin Trail update

The final collection of the season on Saturday produced a bumper amount, with over £300 being collected in the Viking Supporters' Bar. This total would probably have been beaten by a substantial amount as the bar was opened early due to the inclement weather, with no non-members fees being collected for about a hundred early customers. Nevertheless, a total of £683.76 was raised, meaning that the new total is now £32,620.67.
Thank you to everyone who contributed - all money will go towards the costs of running the Rovers' youth team.
We would also like to remind all those who pledged money under the "Sponsor a goal" appeal in the Rovers programme, that your money is now due. Rovers scored 65 goals in the League One campaign, meaning that each 50p pledge equates to £32.50, and (obviously) each £1 pledge equates to £65. Please contact Andy Liney to arrange payment - details are on the VSC web site (www.vikingsc.co.uk). On-line payment of your pledges will be available from later this week.

Rovers 3 Luton 3

Doncaster Rovers and Luton Town put on a great display of football for the final game of the season, despite Luton already having been crowned as League One champions, and Rovers assured of their best league finish since 1958, despite having missed out on the play-offs. Rovers scored after just thirty seconds, with Lewis Guy firing home. Luton then equalised before going in front just four minutes later - a truly shocking defensive dispaly putting the champions in front. Rovers equalised six minutes after the break - an own goal to show even the champions can make a mess of defending. The best goals for both sides were left until last. Firstly Kevin Nicholls fired a superb long range strike in with 63 minutes on the clock, then Rovers equalised with the lively Lewis Guy cracking a great shot from 18 yards which went across the keeper and into the far, left corner of the goal.
The final "Man of the Match" voting of this season has now closed. Thank you to everyone who has voted - we will let you know the winner on Tuesday morning. All votes cast this season have been used to calculate the "Player of the Season" - we will let you know these results during the summer.

First pre-season game

The 2004/05 season may have only finished yesterday afternoon, but news has been announced of a Rovers' pre-season friendly fixture. Rovers are set to be at home against League Two side Notts County on Friday, 22nd July, with a 7.30pm kick-off. This news was announced this week on the Notts County official web site as "confirmed".

May 8, 2005

Foster injury news

It has been confirmed that Steve Foster's injury, which caused him to be carried off on a stretcher in the second half of yesterday's game, is not as bad as was first feared. It seems that he has a medial ligament injury, which apparently takes around three weeks to heal. This will mean that the Rovers' skipper will be fit to report with the rest of the squad for pre-season training.

May 8, 2005

Rigoglioso update

It has emerged from a report in the "Green 'Un" last night, and as an aside in Dave Penney's weekly press conference, that midfielder Adriano Rigoglioso has changed his mind about being transfer listed, and wants to stay at the Rovers and fight for a first team place. It still seems, from Penney's comments, that discussions will take place in the near future on the matter.

Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers look set to make just one change to the starting line-up for today's final game of the League One season, and that is enforced due to Ricky Ravenhill being suspended. John Doolan, whose contract situation at the club is still unclear, will replace him.
After it seemed as though he would miss the rest of the season, striker Neil Roberts has trained this week and has been named in the squad for today's game, although he is likely to be included amongst the substitutes.
Rovers are expecting a full house for today's game, so you would be well advised to arrive a little earlier than normal - go and celebrate the best season that Rovers have had (in final league position terms) in almost fifty years! Rovers have also asked that all fans join in celebrating Luton's championship win - the Rovers players will form a "guard of honour" as the Luton players come onto the pitch.
We would also appeal to all supporters to keep off the pitch at the end of the game. The Rovers players will go around all four sides of the ground after the game to thank the fans for their support this season - but only if everyone stays behind the perimeter walls. Please do not spoil the afternoon!

May 7, 2005

Luton team news

Luton will be without their first choice goalkeeper, Marlon Beresford, for today's final game of the season. Beresford is to undergo surgery on a back injury which has dogged him through the latter part of the season. Dino Seremet is likely to take his place this afternoon. The Hatters could hit the 100 point mark if they win today, so they will be otherwise at full strength, with former Rovers target Warren Feeney likely to make his second start for the club since signing on transfer deadline day.

Dino fires Boro into final

Former Rovers striker Dino Maamria scored the only goal of the game last night in the second leg of the Nationwide Conference Play-off semi-finals, giving Stevenage a 2-1 aggregate victory over Hereford United. Maamria had previously scored a late equaliser in the first leg of the semi-final at Broadhall Way.
Stevenage Borough will meet Carlisle United in the Promotion Final at the Britannia Stadium. Carlisle had a nail-biting victory on penalties over Aldershot last night, with Aldershot having equalised the aggregate scored five minutes into stoppage time.
The Promotion Final at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium will take place next Saturday, 14th May, with a 7.30pm kick-off.

May 6, 2005

Rovers release five

Jon Maloney is the surprise casualty in the list of players to be released by Dave Penney this summer. Maloney, who had a very successful three months on loan at York City this season, came back to make a couple of first team appearances, and seemed to have a future at Rovers.
The other players to be released are Ben Jackson, Guy Ipoua, Jamie Price and Nic Priet.
Adriano Rigoglioso is under contract for one more season, but despite Dave Penney saying that he will talk with the player soon, previous reports suggest that Rigoglioso will be transfer listed in the summer so he can play first team football elsewhere.
John Doolan has still not signed a new contract, with contradictory information on the Rovers' official site and in the Doncaster Star this week. It is clear that Doolan has been offered a one year contract, but the player and manager have given different reasons as to why that contract has not been accepted. Rovers indicate that the player has been asked to give Dave Penney his decision today.

May 6, 2005

Saturday match arrangements

Rovers' players will give the Luton players a "guard of honour" as they come onto the pitch for tomorrow's match, as a way of acknowledging Luton winning the League One championship. We hope that all Rovers supporters will join in the applause for our opponents, and it is hoped that they will parade their championship trophy around the ground before the kick-off.
The Rovers players will go around all four sides of the pitch after the match tomorrow so they can thank the fans for their support throughout the season. However, this will only be done if all specatators remain behind the perimeter wall, and any pitch incursions will result in this being cancelled immediately. We would ask everyone to co-operate - please don't spoil it again this year, as a number of people did last season. There will be no appearance by the players or management in the directors box this year, so we urge you not to invade the pitch, and to leave the ground via the usual routes.
We thank all fans for their cooperation with these arrangements.

Miller fights for place

Former Doncaster Rovers defender and captain Barry Miller is keen to remain with Burton Albion, despite not being offered a new contract for next season. Miller has told boss Nigel Clough that he wants to report for pre-season training and fight for a place in the squad on a non-contract basis.

May 6, 2005

Wrexham face last match?

The supporters of Wrexham have sent us the following statement which needs little further explanation. A further article on the situation appeared on the Viking Supporters' Co-operative's web site yesterday (www.vikingsc.co.uk).

Tomorrow marks what is set to be the last game at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground, and the last game in Wrexham FC's history. While all our fans hope we will survive to play in League Two next season, Alex Hamilton may have destroyed our club.
However, there is still some hope of a buyer being found and the club carrying on. The main reason for that hope is the support we have had from the fans of each and every other club in the league. This season has been the hardest in living memory for our club, but it has also shown us just how much goodwill there is towards us from the rest of the 92 league and Premiership clubs.
We salute ALL fans who have visited the Racecourse this season, who have donated to the Supporters Trust, who have joined in events such as the Wear Red For Wrexham Day, or who have helped us in any other way. The football fans of the UK can stand proud in knowing that they have taken on greedy property developers and other businessmen, and will continue to do so whenever they appear at any club.
Remember - Fans United Will Never Be Defeated.

Mulligan gets international call-up

Rovers defender Dave Mulligan looks to be central to new Zealand manager Ricki Herbert's plans after he was named in the New Zealand squad for their friendly fixture against Australia at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground in London on June 10th. Interestingly, despite featuring at right back for Rovers this season, it appears from reports that Mulligan is seen as a central midfield player.
The naming of this squad is significant as it is the first Kiwis fixture since they unexpectedly crashed out of the Oceania Cup held twelve months ago at the group stage of the competition. The match gives Mulligan the opportunity to establish himself in the New Zealand squad as Herbert begins to rebuild his squad, with some of the more experienced players being omitted from his current plans.
The full squad named is: All Whites squad –
Goalkeepers: Mark Paston (Walsall FC, Eng), Glen Moss (NZ Knights).
Defenders: Che Bunce (Cambridge/Waikato FC), Danny Hay (NZ Knights/Waitakere Utd), Steven Old (St Johns Uni), Ryan Nelsen (Blackburn Rovers, captain), Tony Lochhead (Uni Santa Barbara), Craig Wylie (Waitakere City/Waitakere Utd).
Midfielders: David Mulligan (Doncaster Rovers), Ivan Vicelich (Roda JC), Tim Brown (Richmond Kickers), Raf de Gregorio (HJK Helsinki/Team Wellington), Michael Wilson (Minnesota Thunder/Team Wellington).
Forwards: Leo Bertos (Rochdale FC), Vaughan Coveny (Sth Melbourne), Brent Fisher (FC Energie Cottbus), Chris Killen (Oldham Athletic), Shane Smeltz (AFC Wimbledon).

Substitutes: Lee, Flint, Brittain, Maudslay, L Green

Reddish resigns

Former Rovers defender/midfielder Shane Reddish has resigned as manager at Irish club Ards following a disappointing season in which the club finished eighth, which was not helped by the departure of three key players and forced wage cuts on the rest of the club staff. Reddish had been at Ards since 2003, and played over fifty games for Rovers between 1990 and 1993.

Penney looks forward to champions visit

Rovers manager Dave Penney is looking forward to Rovers' final game of the season, when they face League One champions, Luton town. With Rovers having lost just twice at home this season, a good contest is in store. "It will be good to play the champions and I think they've already sold all of their tickets," said Penney. "It should be a good atmosphere and it will be nice for us to test ourselves against the champions."

Dino is play-off hero

Former Rovers striker Dino Maamria scored a late equaliser for Stevenage Borough in the first leg of their Nationwide Conference play-off semi-final against Hereford United at Broadhall Way yesterday.
In the other semi-final, Aldershot won at home against Carlisle United, with Nick Crittenden scoring in the 48th minute.

In other games this weekend, Adebayo Akinfenwa scored Torquay's first goal on the way to a 2-0 win over Blackpool in League One, Dave Morley had the misfortune to put through his own goal in Macclesfield's 3-0 defeat at Cheltenham Town in League Two, and Richie Barker scored Mansfield's first goal as they won 3-2 at home to Boston United.
Dropping down into the Nationwide North, Andy Hayward scored three minutes from time for Stalybridge Celtic as they won 3-2 at Redditch, and Neil Grayson scored twice as Stafford Rangers beat Alfreton Town 3-1.

Rovers ask ref to review Ricky booking

Rovers have asked the referee from Saturday's game at Bristol City to review Ricky Ravenhill's first booking, which was the first of two seen by the Rovers midfielder, resulting in his 72nd minute sending off. Under the new disciplinary code, suspensions for bookings begin immediately, and the only thing saving Ravenhill from missing out on the final match of the season will be if Rovers can persuade the match official to review the decision. Dave Penney said: "I didn't agree with his first booking. There was a crowd of 12,000 and Ricky didn't hear the referee's whistle from 20 yards away. He was booked even though their lad also played on. There was no argument about the second caution. We've asked the referee to look at the first incident again but if he doesn't change his mind it will mean an immediate one-game suspension."

May 2, 2005

Rovers v Luton

The final game of the season, against Luton Town on Saturday, is NOT all-ticket for Doncaster Rovers supporters. It is, however, all-ticket for Luton supporters, who are reported to have sold all their allocation of around 2,500 for their final League One fixture before being promoted to the Championship.
The match has been classed as "Category A" by Rovers, meaning that admission charges are:
Seating: Adults £18.00, Concessions £12.00
Standing: Adults £15.00, Concessions £8.00

Rovers 2 Bristol City 2

The dream of the play-offs finally died this afternoon as Rovers were denied victory after failing to clear a Bristol City corner in the last minute of the game. After Leo Fortune-West had given Rovers the lead ten minutes short of the interval, Steve Brooker equalised just after an hour of play. With Ricky Ravenhill sent off in the 73rd minute for a second bookable offence, Rovers were up against it, but looked to be heading for a great victory as Fortune-West scored his second goal of the game with just two minutes to go.
The draw means that Rovers are now guaranteed to finish at least eleventh in the final league table, equalling their best league position since 1958.
The "Man of the match" voting has now closed, and the result will be announced on Tuesday morning.

Rovers to make major squad changes

Club Call have reported that Doncaster Rovers are set to have a large change in the squad during the summer, with around a dozen players out of contract this summer. Stuart Jones, Nicolas Priet and Jamie Price have already been named, with Adriano Rigoglioso due to be placed on the transfer list so that he can gain a regular first team place elsewhere. Penney has hinted that those to leave will be the fringe players of the squad, with those who have featured in recent games set to be retained.
With the transfer window system due to be in force for the first time next season, Rovers are hoping to substantially strengthen their squad, so that they can mount a major promotion campaign.
Penney said:"It gives us scope to change it round and get a better quality of player in. With the transfer window coming in down to this level as well it's important we get a strong squad with everyone able to play in the first team."
He has played down the prospect, hinted at by John Ryan, that a fee in excess of £200,000 would be paid during the summer for a new striker. As in the past, Penney will focus on getting the right player at the right price. "It's prudent now to look round at free transfers, you might be able to spend a little bit more on wages to bring those people in. I'll be looking to bring about ten in."
