Rovers v Peterborough team news

Rovers will give a late fitness test to winger James Coppinger, who picked up a knock in Tuesday's Carling Cup game against Nottingham Forest. Striker Neil Roberts will resume his place in the side, with defender Jamie Price likely to retain his place after a good performance on Tuesday.
Simon Marples and Mark Albrighton look set to continue absences due to injuries, and Ricky Ravenhill is still suspended.
Peterborough have Curtis Woodhouse and Chris Plummer returning from suspension, although Matt Nolan will miss the match with a knee injury. Posh will be without defender Steve Jenkins and striker Leon Constanatine have this week agreed loan moves out of Peterborough, to Swindon and Torquay respectively.

Millers brought down to earth

Rotherham United confirmed yesterday afternoon that the move by Mike Worthington and Darren Millington, the owners of Earth Mortgages to buy the club have been called off. The duo claim that the "due diligence" exercise has shown some unexpected results which mean that they are unable to proceed with the planned purchase from Ken Booth.
The Yorkshire Post reports that Worthington and Millington may be about to join the Doncaster Rovers board, thus increasing their connection with the club - they already sponsor the stadium, and have their name on the kit as secondary kit sponsors. Whilst they may be invited to join the Rovers board, chairman John Ryan insists that the club is not for sale.
The bid for Rotherham was not helped by the adverse reaction to the news that they had invited former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne to a recent match, thus fuelling speculation that boss Ronnie Moore faced the sack - supporters subsequently gave an overwhelming demonstration of confidence at that game. Gascoigne ultimately did not attend that fixture.
Rotherham have issued a statemet expressing their disappointment, with the decision coming just three days before the deal was due to go through. They stress that the club remains in safe hands, although every effort will be made to find new owners in due course.

Penney optimistic

Dave Penney is calling for his side to keep their recent good league form going tomorrow afternoon when they face Peterborough United, who are one place (but three points) behind Rovers. Rovers remain unbeaten in the league at Belle Vue in over nine months, and Penney expects that record to remain intact tomorrow."If we can last as long as we did last season then I'll settle for that," he said. "We lost in September and then we weren't beaten at home again until January. "Our home record is excellent but our last two games away from home have been big games against Chesterfield and Barnsley and I'm happy with four points from them."
Penney received a further boost with news that Mark Albrighton has started training again with Barrie Windle, and stands a chance of being fit to play against Peterborough. One player to definitely return will be Neil Roberts, who was cup-tied for the Forest match on Tuesday.

Forest face inquiry over cup-tied player

Nottingham Forest's official web site has reported that they had to contact the Football League after they realised that they had named Brian Cash on their substitutes bench on Tuesday night. Cash had played for Rochdale in a previous round whilst on loan.
Forest report that the Football League have cleared them to play in the fourth round as Cash did not come onto the field of play during the match, although there is set to be an inquiry into the "technical breach" of rules.

Jamie signs for Kettering

Former Rovers winger Jamie Paterson finally completed his move from Barrow to Nationwide North club Kettering Town earlier this week. He signed in time to make his debut for them in their 3-3 draw with Altrincham on Tuesday evening.
Paterson's departure from Barrow was forced by a cut in the budget allocated to players wages - although Kettering were able to offer Jamie double the wages that Barrow were paying him. "That just shows the level of wages we are paying really." said Barrow boss, Lee Turnbull.

As a direct consequence of an appeal in the Doncaster Star last night, the giant flag was recovered last night following a phone call to Andy Liney. Thanks go to the person who made contact - the flag will be back on duty on Saturday at the Peterborough United game.

Penney: no complaints

Rovers boss Dave Peneny said that he had no complaints about the performance of his side following Tuesday night's Carling Cup exit at the hands of Nottingham Forest. He said: "I thought they were the better side. They looked very dangerous in the final third of the field and, in truth, we didn't really look like breaking them down.
However, commenting on the two goals conceded, he said: "We gave it a good go but, from my point of view, I was very disappointed with the two goals we gave away."
"It was just a shame we couldn't have got a result after beating Ipswich in the last round, but there was a difference in quality out there and the scoreline was fair enough."

Wanted - one match sponsor!

Rovers yesterday announced that they are still looking for someone to take up match sponsorship for Saturday's home game against Peterborough United. Due to the short notice, they are prepared to reduce the normal cost of the match sponsorship package. If anyone is interested, they should contact either Ray Thomas, Alick Jeffrey or Charles Swallow in the Commercial department - their phone number is 01302 379327.

Man of the match

The winner of the voting for the "Man of the Match" in the home game against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday was Dave Morley, who won over a quarter of all votes cast. This victory means that Dave has now won two votes in a row, and he has received votes for all games since he has been recalled to the side.
The battle for second place was intense, with few votes separating three players, with Michael McIndoe coming home narrowly ahead of Jermaine McSporran, who in turn was just slightly ahead of Paul Green, who remains the leader in the "Player of the Season" voting.
With most players who played receiving nominations, the leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Dave Morley (28.30%)
2 Michael McIndoe (15.10%)
3 Jermaine McSporran (14.37%)
4 Paul Green (13.21%)
Thank you to all who took part. The next vote will open on Saturday evening following the home game against Peterborough United.

Where's the flag?

Due to the large crowd at Belle Vue yesterday evening, we are uncertain as to the whereabouts of the giant flag that was on display before the kick-off. If anyone knows of who has it, could you please either contact this web site or Andy Liney as soon as possible - use the contact button on the left of this screen to get in touch.
We have another home match on Saturday, and it would be great if it were to be on display again!

Jamie in move to Poppies?

After news that Jamie Paterson's move from Barrow to Forest Green Rovers had fallen through, it now appears that he is about to move to Nationwide North club Kettering Town. Rovers 0 Forest 2

Doncaster Rovers went out of the Carling Cup this evening as they conceded a goal in each half against Nottingham Forest. Rovers had a good spell at the beginning of the second half when, with a little more fortune and directness on goal, their possession could have produced goals, but Forest did well to block the shots that came Rovers' way. The first goal came after a cross in from the left which found Marlon King unmarked on the right side of the area, leaving him with time to pick his spot. The second goal came from a corner which was headed straight home.
A full update will appear as soon as possible,The man of the match voting is now closed. Thank you to everyone who took part.

Rovers v Forest ticket update

This morning, there were around 3,000 tickets for the terracing in all areas of Belle Vue. Rovers have therefore decided that the ticket office will sell tickets for the game until 6.15pm. After that, you will be able to pay on the turnstiles, with the ticket office only being open for tickets for the sale of tickets for seated areas, tickets for the disabled viewing areas and collection of tickets already ordered.
However, should demand for tickets continue through the day, certain areas may sell out, meaning that those paying on the turnstiles may run the risk of having to watch the game from somewhere they may not normally do.

October 26, 2004

Rovers v Forest team news

Rovers are set to be without five players this evening as they strive to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup. New signing Neil Roberts will miss the game as he is cup-tied, Ricky Ravenhill is suspended, with Mark Albrighton, Steve Foster and Simon Marples being absent due to injuries. However, Dave Penney will welcome James Coppinger back into the squad after recovering from a virus.
Rovers will be likely to start the game with Leo Fortune-West deputising for Roberts, and Dave Mulligan continuing at right back in place of Marples. Apart from that, we expect that the side will be the same as started at Saltergate on Saturday.
Nottingham Forest will be without Gareth Taylor and Paul Evans due to suspension, with Jon-Olav Hjelde and Andy Reid missing the game as they are injured. However, Andy Impey returns after completing a one-match ban.

October 26, 2004

Rovers v Forest match preview

Rovers may be missing five players for this evening's big match against Nottingham Forest, but boss Dave Penney is hoping to add the scalps of the Championship club to Rovers' list of victims, after dumping Ipswich Town out of the competition in the last round. Penney said: "This will be another tough test, but we've got quite a good record at home and if we get a big crowd behind us who knows what could happen."
Dave went on to say: "Although the League is the priority, it's nice to have the distraction of the Cup, with no pressure on us. A win today would give us the chance of a Premiership side in the next round which would be good for the finances and a good test for the lads."
He also believes that a near-capacity crowd will be a big determining factor in the outcome of the game.
Rovers go into the match on a three match unbeaten run, and have not lost at home since January, whereas Forest have struggled this season after just avoiding relegation last time, and lost 3-2 to Preston at the weekend.

There were nominations for nine different players, with the leading results being:
1 Dave Morley (35%)

The goals review

Our weekly review of goals scored this weekend by former Rovers players begins in the Nationwide Conference, where Neil Redfearn took his seasonal tally to seven when he scored Scarborough’s second goal in their 4-0 demolition of Accrington Stanley, which lifts the Seadogs into 7th place in the table.
The Nationwide North sees Andy Hayward scoring the winner for Stalybridge Celtic as they beat Ashton United – which was enough to take them off the bottom of the league table, taking advantage of Bradford Park Avenue and Moor Green having their matches postponed due to waterlogged pitches.
In the UniBond Premier League, midfielder Jason Minett scored the opening goal of the game for Lincoln United, who went on to draw 2-2 at Marine to maintain their midtable position. The UniBond First Division saw ex-Rovers midfielder Steve Hawes score the first goal for Stocksbridge Park Steels as they eventually went down 4-3 in a thriller at Woodley Sports. In the same division, Sean Parrish scored a consolation goal for AFC Telford eight minutes from time as they lost 4-2 at Kendal Town - but are still handily placed in sixth place in the table.
Looking further afield, in the Ryman Division One, the much travelled Wade Falana scored an 89th minute equaliser for Dulwich Hamlet as they drew 3-3 at Molesey.

Ingham signs for Frickley

Besides Rovers, Gary names a long list of former clubs - Rotherham United, Gainsborough Trinity (three times), Goole Town, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Maltby Main and Stalybridge Celtic.

October 23, 2004

Chesterfield v Rovers team news

Rovers will be travelling to Saltergate this afternoon in the hope that their good fortune earned during their hard-fought victory at Barnsley on Wednesday continues.
Rovers will definitely be without midfielder Ricky Ravenhill who begins a three match suspension after beign shown a red card late in the Barnsley match. Defender Mark Albrighton and winger James Coppinger are added to the squad, and although John Doolan took a kick on his calf and has some bruising on his ankle, everyone that played on Wednesday is fit to play today.
However, we only expect one change to be made to the starting line-up owing to Ravehill's absence, with Paul Green the most likely candidate to fill his place.

Chesterfield have no new injury problems, and are likely to stick with the same side that beat Stockport County last week. However, Mark Stallard, Mark Hudson and Mark Innes have recovered from injuries and are available for selection. Defender Alan O'Hare has recovered from an ankle injury, but has now gone down with a throat infection, and is considered doubtful for the game.

Rhodes on standby

Andy Rhodes, the former Rovers goalkeeper, has been registered as a player by Ipswich Town as the club faces a goalkeeping crisis. Rhodes, now 40 years old, is a coach at Portman Road, has not played a senior game for six years, but is likely to be on the bench this afternoon after 17-year old Shane Supple suffered a suspected broken toe in the reserves game on Wednesday. This only leaves Lewis Price available, who is currently deputising for first choice Kelvin Davis, who continues to be absent with a back problem.
Ipswich will make a late decision as to whether to include Rhodes, or to go without a keeper on the bench.
Andy played over 100 games for Rovers between 1985 and 1988.

Penney praises "fantastic fans"

Dave Penney praised the massive travelling Rovers support at Oakwell on Wednesday evening, noting that the noise level went up as the Rovers goal tally went up.
Not surprisingly, he was pleased with the result, saying that Rovers deserved the luck that took them to a 3-1 win over Barnsley. He said: "We got a little bit lucky with the two own-goals, but if you keep putting the ball in the right areas then something will drop for you. You've got to ride your luck but I thought the quality of our play at times was excellent."
Penney also praised the performance of goalkeeper Andy Warrington, saying:: "Andy did very well and that was his best performance of the season. He commanded his box well and made a lot of good saves. It's important that keepers make saves at the right time because it gives you something to hang on to."

Andy wins, hands down!

Rovers fans backed Dave Penney's comments above by voting Andy Warrington as their "Man of the Match" for his performance in Wednesday's victory at Oakwell. A total of ten different players received votes, and apart from Warrington's commanding lead, the votes were spread fairly evenly through the remaining candidates. The leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Andy Warrington (52.31%)
2 Dave Morley (11.57%)
3 John Doolan, Jermaine McSporran, Gregg Blundell (7.69% each)

Burton, still only 20 years old, joined Scarborough from Rovers in the summer, but has only started five games so far this season.

Barnsley 1 Rovers 3

An eventful evening, with a player being sent off on either side, ended with two own goals by Barnsley enabling Rovers to register a crucial 3-1 win at Oakwell. The other Rovers goal was scored by Gregg Blundell, but the result surely puts real pressure on Barnsley manager Paul Hart, who was being heavily criticsed by Barnsley supporters after the defeat at the weekend. Rovers managed to preserve their lead to the end, despite coming under heavy pressure in the closing stages of the game. Rovers registered a very welcome victory, which lifts them up two places to 15th in the League One table.
The "Man of the Match" voting is now closed. Thanks to the many who have taken part - the result will be announced on Friday morning.

October 20, 2004

Barnsley v Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers will face Barnsley in a League match for the first time since the 1978/79 season when the two sides meet at Oakwell this evening.
Rovers have concerns over two players, with James Coppinger still suffering from the virus that forced his substitution just before half time on Saturday, meaning that he will miss tonight's game. Of more concern is the fact that Mark Albrighton twisted his knee towards the end of the Torquay match, and will face a late fitness test. Jermaine McSporran will replace Coppinger, and Dave Morley is set to make his first League appearance of the season should Albrighton be ruled out. Apart from that, Rovers will only be missing Steve Foster, who is out for at least another six weeks.
Barnsley will be missing Antony Kay and Matt Carbon this evening due to knee and hamstring injuries respectively. However, right back Bobby Hassell could return after missing Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday with a back injury.

Forest ticket info

Tickets for all parts of the ground are now on sale for next Tuesday's home game against Nottingham Forest. Admission prices for the game are: Seating - Adults £18, Concessons £12; Standing - Adults £15, Concessions £8.
The match is all-ticket - but we understand that should all tickets not be sold for the match, they will be on sale from the ticket office on the day of the game. That may not guarantee you a place in your favoured part of the ground if one stand is sold out, and queues may well be experienced before the match, so a ticket in advance may well be a good idea!

Vouchers information for Owls clash

To reduce the risk of Sheffield Wednesday supporters gaining admission for the home parts of the ground when Rovers play Wednesday at Belle Vue on 19th December, Rovers have decided to introduce a voucher system to enable you to buy a ticket. These vouchers will be given out on entry to the Peterborough (on 30th October) and Stockport games (on 20th November). Tickets for the Sheffield Wednesday fixture will go on sale on 1st December.
Please remember that if you have a season ticket you do not need to be concerned with these arrangements, as you automatically have admission to all home league games. Once an initial period for those with vouchers to buy tickets has passed, they will go on general sale - although anyone doing so will then have to supply a utility bill to confirm Doncaster residency.
Rovers have warned that any Sheffield Wednesday supporters in the home end will be ejected from the ground.

October 20, 2004

Gary moves on again

Former Rovers defender Gary Finlay has moved on to his third club of the season by signing forms for Colwyn Bay in time to make his debut last Saturday against Stocksbridge Park Steels in the UniBond League First Division. Finlay began the season as player/manager at Aberystwyth Town, and moves to Colwyn Bay from Total Netwok Solutions, although his first team appearances at TNS have been restricted recently.
Gary made seven first team appearances for Rovers during the infamous 1997/98 relegation season.

The Viking Supporters' Co-operative's "Coin Trail" appeal to raise money for the Rovers youth team raised £564.80 at Saturday's home game against Torquay, which, when added to other donations made recently, takes the new total raised to £20,470.17.
Thank you to all fans who contributed for their generosity - the VSC are now 400 metres along their "trail" of 2km, which represents the distance between Belle Vue and the new Community Stadium.

Belles slip up again

Doncaster Rovers Belles went down to yet another defeat on Sunday when they went down 3-0 at the hands of Bristol City, with a fifth minute goal being added to by goals immediately before, and immediately after, the half time break.
The result puts the Rovers Belles deep in the relegation fight already, with just five points from nine games - it was Bristol City's first win of the season, and lifts them above Doncaster on goal difference.

Tris sinks the Seadogs

Our look at the exploits of Rovers players in action this weekend begins at Prenton Park in League One, where Ben Muirhead scored Bradford’s fourth goal in the 81st minute as they snatched a dramatic 5-4 last minute win against Tranmere. It was 3-1 in the 80th minute, with five goals coming in a dramatic last ten minutes of the game! The only other ex-Rover on the score sheet in League one was, as you no doubt know, Adebayo Akinfenwa, who scored Torquay’s opener at Belle Vue. JJ Melligan scored Cheltenham Town’s first goal in their 2-1 win at Rochdale in League Two.
In the Nationwide Conference, Tristram Whitman scored the only goal of the game in the last minute to give his new club, Tamworth, victory over his previous club, Scarborough.
Further down the league structure it was FA Cup Third Qualifying Round day. Mark Sale scored Alfreton Town’s second goal during their 3-2 win at Cammell Laird, and Paul Barnes scored his tenth goal of the season as Hinckley United crushed Mossley 6-1. Finally, Martin Paul scored Chippenham Town's second goal in the Southern League Premier fixture against Chesham United, with Town on to win 3-2.

Peyton listed

Leigh RMI boss Phil Starbuck has released two, and transfer listed another two players as he attempts to improve the fortunes of the Railywaymen, who are now involved in the relegation battle at the bottom of the Conference.
Former Rovers midfielder Warren Peyton has been placed on the transfer list, and has been hold that he will not play for the club again, with Starbuck saying: "He needs a fresh challenge, is not in my plans and won't play for me again. It is a team game and Peyton did not follow instructions. He is a loose cannon and won't get anywhere like that.

Lincoln City 2 Youth Team 0

The Rovers' youth team lost their game against Lincoln City 2-0 on Saturday - but it was still only their second defeat of the season. Young star striker Ben Jackson was sent off in the last minute of the game for a second bookable offence.

October 16, 2004

Rovers 2 Torquay 2

After Rovers went into a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute, the prospects for the game looked bright for Rovers as they overcame a poor start to play some good football in the last 25 minutes of the first half. They started the second half well, but Torquay pressed forward in the last 20 minutes. Rovers looked to be coming away with all three points until the 90th minute when an awful lack of organisation in defence enabled Kuffour, undoubtedly United's best player, to slam home the equaliser.
The "Man of the Match" voting is now closed. Thank you to everyone who gave their opinion - the result will be revealed on Tuesday morning. All the post-match updates are now completed.

Guy goes on loan

It emerged yesterday that Rovers striker Guy Ipoua has signed for Mansfield Town in a one-month loan deal, and was included in the Mansfield side yesterday afternoon. Rovers have since stated that the loan has been arranged to give him some match practice, but that it is intended that Guy will return to the club in due course.

Paterson set to be casualty of budget cut

Former Rovers midfielder Jamie Paterson looks set to become the first casualty of a cut in the budget at Nationwide North club Barrow, which has been caused by an alarming slump in attendances which has been triggered by their poor start to the season. Ex-Rover Lee Turnbull, the manager at Barrow, accepted the position that a budget cut was necessary, and will be working with his board to reduce the budget to a sustainable level.

Rovers v Torquay team news

Defenders Simon Marples and Tim Ryan will be available for selection for this afternoon's game against Torquay after their injury situations improved. Simon Marples came through an hour of the midweek reserve team game without any adverse reaction. Dave Penney revealed yesterday that Tim Ryan has trained this week, somewhat of a surprise after it was earlier feared that he would need an operation to cure a cartilage problem However, the injury seems to have settled down, and Rovers are hoping that surgery will not now be required.
Striker Neil Roberts is set to make his home debut at Belle Vue against Torquay, with Penney giving little away as to which strikers will play tomorrow. Leo Fortune-West is in the squad after being rested last weekend.
The improving injury situation means that only Steve Foster is definitely out of action - Foster is to have an exploratory operation on his ankle today to determine the extent of his injury.

Torquay United were given a boost when Martin Gritton's ankle X-ray revealed nothing more than swelling underneath a gash picked up against Huddersfield, and the Gulls are optimisitic that he will be fit to travel for tomorrow's game. Bruno Meirelles is also fit to play after being rested last week due to a tight hamstring. Leo Caovill and Arjan van Heusden will both miss the game with hamstring injuries.
Torquay will include former Rovers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa in their squad for the match.

Newell in the running

Former Rovers striker Mike Newell, now in charge at League One pace setters Luton Town, is one of a long list of names being linked with the vacant manager's post at Leicester City. The Foxes are not in a rush to make the appointment, with Dave Bassett and Howard Wilkinson being in charge on a match by match basis.
Stuart Pearce and John Gregory appear to be the early favourites for the job, with former Leicester players Gary McAllister and Mike Newell, along with Burnley boss Steve Cotterill, also being linked to the vacancy.
