Penney: no complaints about the effort

Rovers boss Dave Penney had no complaints about his side's performance in Monday afternoon's defeat, apart from the fact that they didn't score enough goals. He said "We didn't play well at Port Vale on Saturday but this was more like the tempo we need to play at to be successful."
He thought that the sending off of striker Lewis Guy was the key factor that denied Rovers some points, as they had been pressurising the Huddersfield defence at that time. He said: "If we'd kept 11 players on the pitch we could have taken something from the game. I'm disappointed with the result but I've no complaints about the effort or performance apart from the lack of goals.

Former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Paul Crichton has landed the job of player/coach at League One side Gillingham. The 36-year old keeper signed a two year contract this week after joining from Accrington Stanley.

Shields in loan move

Dene Shields, who spent a month on loan from Sunderland whilst Rovers were in the Conference, is close to joining Scottish First Division club Stranraer in a loan deal that will keep him at Stair Park until January. Shields joined Gretna from Cowdenbeath in January 2005, but has made just three subsitute appearances for the club. His previous clubs also include Cowdenbeath, Raith Rovers, Kirkcaldy, Brechin City and Scarborough.

Rovers 1 Huddersfield 2

The much promised for changes that Dave Penney indicated following Saturday's defeat at Port Vale were unsurprisingly much more limited than some may have thought. Dave Mulligan started the game at right back at the expense of Phil McGuire, and Thornton was restored to the starting eleven.
One of the poorest performances by a Rovers side for some time was turned in by Rovers during the first half, who failed to clear a second minute corner, with the ball finding Brandon five yards outside the area, and a cleanly struck volley whistled into the back of the Rovers net. In some ways it was surprising that it took the visitors until the 40th minute to score the second goal. That again was as a result of a poor clearance by Rovers, with Worthington volleying the ball home from 25 yards to give Warrington no chance of stopping the shot.
Rovers put in a much improved performance after the break, although they were often guilty of overworking the ball instead of taking the early shot. The lively Lewis Guy won a penalty when he raced down the right side of the penalty area, only to be brought down by the goalkeeper. Mysteriously, bearing in mind the current laws of the game, Rachubka was only shown a yellow card - but McIndoe stepped up to confidently send the keeper the wrong way with the penalty.
The possibility of an equaliser effectively evaporated when Lewis Guy was sent off for an off the ball incident in which he appeared to push an opponent to the ground after both had been involved in tussling for the ball. Even so, McIndoe had a great chance to round the keeper to level the scores, but couldn't quite get the ball around the goalkeeper in a one-on-one.
The "Man of the match" voting has now closed. Thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to vote - the result will be announced on Thursday morning.

Rovers v Huddersfield team news

Fans are set to see changes made to the Rovers side for this afternoon's home game against Huddersfield Town following a disappointing display against Wrexham and Port Vale last week. Whilst Penney may have hinted at changes being made, we don't expect any large-scale alterations, with reserve players McDaid, Offiong and Sauders unlikely to be included today. We do think that Lewis Guy may be given a start, and Sean Thornton is very likely to be restored to the starting line-up after impressing when coming on as a late substitute on Saturday.
Jan Budtz is fit again and was included on the bench, but we expect that Warrington will retain his place in the side.
Huddersfield arrive at Belle Vue in second place in the table, although defender Martin McIntosh is doutbtful after missing Saturday's game against Hartlepool with a knee injury. Midfielder Mark Hudson is set for a return to the squad, but Adnan Ahmed will be absent as he continues to recover from tendonitis.
The match is NOT all-ticket for Rovers fans.
Our prediction for the Rovers side this afternoon is:
Warrington, Mulligan, Foster, Fenton, Ryan, Coppinger, Thornton, Predic, McIndoe, Guy, Heffernan

August 29, 2005

Voting results

In an unsurprisingly low level of voting with a wide variety of opinion on who was man of the match which saw eight Rovers players nominated, Steve Foster won the voting by a relatively narrow margin, with the leading votes being cast as follows:
1 Steve Foster (23.08%)
2 Nick Fenton, Sean Thornton, Adam Hughes (15.38%)
Thank you to everyone who took part. With a little luck it will be a better match this afternoon which will persuade more people to vote!

McGrath moves

Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder John McGrath has finally signed for Eircom Premier League club Limerick. He had appeared for the club as a guest against Scunthorpe United at the beginning of the month, and had received an offer from Conference side York City, but elected to return to his homeland. The Irish under-21 international is due to make his debut for Limerick tomorrow night when they face Dundalk.

August 28, 2005

Coin trail

The Viking Supporters' Co-operative have reported that their "Coin Trail" appeal went up by a further £74.27 yesterday afternoon at the away game at Port Vale. This means that the new total for the appeal, which is raising money towards the Rovers youth team, is now £34,628.51.
Thank you to everyone who gave money, especially since Rovers have now completed a sequence of three away matches in a row.

August 28, 2005

Goals time

There were not a huge number of former Rovers players finding the net yesterday, but we begin in League One, where Adebayo Akinfenwa scored one of Swansea City's five goals that they scored at Walsall, with the Swans leaving with a 5-2 victory.
In League Two, ex-Rovers striker Richie Barker scored from the penalty spot as Mansfield Town drew 2-2 at Boston United. More noticeably, Gregg Blundell marked his Chester City league debut by hitting two goals and rave reviews as his new club drew 4-4 at home to Darlington. Simon Johnson, who played for Rovers on loan, scored Darlington's first goal from the penalty spot.
Dropping into the Nationwide North, ex-Rovers youth team striker Michael Rankine scored Barrow's second goal on the way to a 3-1 win over Leigh RMI, which sees the Bluebirds handily placed in fourth place, and Robert Pell put Gainsborough Trinity in front at home to Hednesford Town, only to see an equaliser for the visitors six minutes from time.
Up in Scotland, the hot-shots of the day were Division Three club Stenhousemuir, who beat East Stirling 6-1 to go top of the table, one of only two clubs to retain a 100% record after four games. Former Rovers striker Colin Cramb scored one of their goals.

Council still quiet over stadium deal

Doncaster Council heve continued to refuse to confirm which firm will be awarded the contract to build the new Community Stadium, despite the Doncaster Star reporting that Mowlems are to be awarded the deal. We understand that confirmation of details of the contract are holding up the announcement, but the council have confirmed that building work will begin immediately after the deal has been agreed.
Preparation work on new roads for the site are already underway, and a projected finishing date of October/November 2006 is still anticipated.
Deputy mayor Coun Aidan Rave said: "This is an important decision. It prepares the way for work to start soon on the main structure and shows that we are getting on with the job to deliver a fantastic multi-purpose sports facility for Doncaster by 2007 as promised."
Rovers chairman John Ryan said: "It is the final piece in the jigsaw and it means that in a year's time we will have a new stadium. It will regenerate the image of Doncaster Rovers and will take us from one of the poorest stadiums to one of the best."

August 27, 2005

Port Vale 2 Rovers 0

Rovers went down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat this weekend, with a goal conceded on the half hour, when the ball came back off the bar for Lowndes to tap home. Rovers then conceded a second goal just three minutes after the break, and only rarely threatened to narrow the gap in the rest of the game.
The "Man of the Match" voting has now closed, and the result will be announced on Monday morning.

Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers' injury situation is improving, with a number of players who have missed matches recently playing in the behind closed doors match against Leeds United on Thursday. Midfielder Uros Predic is fit after overcoming a hamstring injury, and we expect him to make his debut this afternoon, with Paul Green remaining very doubtful with an ankle injury. Sean Thornton may return after being dropped from Tuesday's squad, and Adam Hughes' goal-scoring performance on Tuesday may earn him a place in the squad.
Stephen Roberts and Mark Albrighton are both fit, although we don't expect either to start the game. Jan Budtz may appear on the bench this afternoon after resuming training this week.
We expect that Neil Roberts will return up front alongside Paul Heffernan after recovering from a knock on the knee he suffered at Swansea.

August 27, 2005

Port Vale team news

Port Vale have several injury worries ahead of this afternoon's game with Rovers, with several players classed as "doubtful". Robin Hulbert and Michael Walsh look certain to miss the game, with late fitness tests facing Mickey Bell, Mark Innes, Sam Collins and George Abbey. Hector Sam is definitely out after breaking his leg at Rotherham United last week.
Vale boss Martin Foyle said: "At the moment I have 14 fit players and Lee Matthews is not match fit. We may have see who we can bring in on loan"

Reserves 1 Leeds United 1

Doncaster Rovers' reserve team played a "behind closed doors" friendly fixture against Leeds United yesterday afternoon, giving a number of players returning from injury the chance to get a game. Dave Penney also took the opportunity to check on a few trialists, one of whom scored the Rovers goal.
New loan signing Uros Predic played in the game, and comes into contention for Saturday's away game at Port Vale, with both Paul Green and Sean Thornton doubtful after missing the Wrexham game due to injury.

August 26, 2005

Penney happy to go through

Dave Penney was a happy man after successfully negotiating a tricky first round Carling Cup game at Wrexham on Tuesday evening. He said: "Coming to a lower league team they want to cause an upset by beating a higher league team. It was a battle and we battled away. We're quite pleased now, that's three away games and we've only conceded one goal and we've won two and drawn one. We're quite pleased with our away record, we're battling away and we're getting some good results."

August 26, 2005

Injury update

As mentioned above, new loan signing Uros Predic is recovering well from hamstring and ankle injuries and played in yesterday's practice game at Leeds.
Paul Green is progressing well with his ankle injury, but took another knock on the ankle in training, and is still doubtful for Saturday's game at Port Vale.
Mark Albrighton has resumed full training, and is now available for selection.
Simon Marples is only making a slow recovery from a torn calf muscle, and will not be available for a few matches yet.
Both Danish goalkeepers are progressing well: Jan Budtz is back in training and may be in contention for a place on the bench on Saturday. Nielsen is recovering well from his knee operation, but will be out for another four or five weeks.
Thankfully Steve Roberts has not got a hernia problem, and a specialist has given him the all-clear to resume training. His brother, Neil, is back in training after taking a knock on his knee on Saturday, and is available to play against Port Vale tomorrow.
Continuing to be absent with longer term injuries are Jermaine McSporran and Adriano Rigoglioso.

Wrexham 0 Rovers 1

The voting for the "Man of the Match" in Tuesday's narrow Carling Cup victory has now closed. Thanks go to everyone who has taken part. The result will be revealed on Saturday morning.

August 25, 2005

Wrexham "Man of the match"

Thank you to a surprisingly large number of people who voted in the "Man of the Match" for the away game at Swansea City. The voting saw ten Rovers players receive nominations, with Dave Mulligan coming out as the clear winner. The leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Dave Mulligan (36.73%)
2 Andy Warrington (16.33%)
2 Lewis Guy (16.33%)
4 Michael McIndoe (8.16%)
The "Man of the Match" voting for Tuesday evening's Carling Cup game at Wrexham is now open on this page. The voting will remain open until 5pm on Friday, with the result being announced on Saturday morning.

August 25, 2005

Chesterfield 2 Youth Team 1

The Rovers' youth team went down 2-1 to Chesterfield in their latest league fixture, with Luke Bythway scoring after coming on as a second half substitute. Youth team manager, Paul Wilson, said "We dominated the game, but lost after two defensive errors. In the second half our keeper had little to do but we failed to capitalise".

August 25, 2005

Reserves update

Yesterday's reserve team game at Hull City was postponed, owing to Hull City having injury problems. The fixture has been rearranged for Wednesday, 19th October, with a 7pm kick-off.

August 23, 2005

Wrexham 0 Rovers 1

Doncaster Rovers went through to the second round of the Carling Cup this evening by the narrowest of margins, with debutant Adam Hughes scoring the only goal of the game within the last five minutes of the match at the Racecourse Ground. Rovers had been on top for the few minutes previously, but Wrexham had forced Andy Warrington to make a number of good saves during the match.
The "Man of the match" voting will open at 7am on Wednesday morning.

August 23, 2005

Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers look set to name a similar side to the one that finished the away game at Swansea City on Saturday, with injuries restricting the changes available to Dave Penney.
Both Neil and Steve Roberts will miss Rovers' first return to Wrexham since Steve switched clubs in the summer - Steve has an ongoing groin injury, and Neil twisting his knee at Swansea.
Paul Green is unlikely to be included to give him more time to recover from an ankle injury, and new signing Uros Predic has a thigh strain, although Rovers have confirmed that international clearance has been received to complete his loan transfer.
It appears that the side that Rovers may send out this evening will be: Warrington, Ryan, McGuire, Fenton, Foster, Mulligan, Coppinger, McIndoe, Ravenhill, Guy, Fortune-West
Longer term absentees due to injury include an Budtz, Adriano Rigoglioso, Jermaine McSporran and Tonny Nielsen.

August 23, 2005

Wrexham team news

Wrexham have added Liverpool winger Robbie Foy to their squad for this evening's Carling Cup game after he signed on loan until January. Liverpool allowed the loan to go through yesterday to give Foy the chance to gain some first team experience.
However, Wrexham are missing a number of playres, including Simon Spender (suspended), with Matty Crowell, Lee McEvilly, Lee Roche and Jim Whitley all injured.

August 23, 2005

Coin trail update

The Viking Supporters' Co-operative raised £84.48 at half time of the Swansea City game on Saturday, which takes the running total of the "Coin Trail" appeal to £34,506.70.

August 23, 2005

Rankine returns

Former Doncaster Rovers youth team striker Michael Rankine, currently at Scunthorpe United, has returned to Nationwide North club Barrow in a one month loan deal after failing to make Scunthorpe's first team this season. Scunthorpe's signing of Billy Sharp from Sheffield United appears to limit Rankine's imminent first team chances, so the player has re-signed for Barrow (whose manager is ex-Rover Lee Turnbull, who works in the Football in the Community at Scunthorpe).

August 21, 2005

Swansea 1 Rovers 2

Doncaster Rovers registered their first win of the season yesterday when they came from being behind at half time to score twice - thanks to Dave Mulligan and Lewis Guy. Swansea took the lead on the stroke of half time when Kevin McLeod headed home from Leon Britton's cross. The introduction of James Coppinger and Lewis Guy proved crucial in the second half, with Dave Mulligan side-footing his goal with 17 minutes to go. Lewis Guy hit the winner as he beat the offside trap just five minutes from the end, giving him the simple task of slotting the ball past the goalkeeper.
The"Man of the Match" voting is now closed, and the result will be announced on Wednesday morning.

August 22, 2005

Penney: we deserved it

In his post-match interviews, Dave Penney insisted that his side were deserved winners in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Swansea's new "White Rock" stadium. Whilst the Swans went into the interval 1-0 up, Penney's second half substitutions proved to be inspired, with Lewis Guy hitting the winner five minutes from the end.
However, Penney played down the substitution factor, saying: "I don't think the substitution had all that much to do with it as I believe we fully deserved the victory. In any case we should have scored before they did as we had a number of chances, particularly in the first half. We expected it to be a struggle here in Swansea as they have a new stadium and 12,000 fans willing them to victory but we didn't wilt and stuck to our guns."

August 22, 2005

The goals check

There was just one goal in the Football League by a former Rovers player this weekend - and he won't thank us for reminding you. Ben Futcher had a bad afternoon, putting through his own goal on the stroke of half time to put Cheltenham Town 3-0 up against Boston United in League Two - he then got booked in the 55th minute, and sent off two minutes from the end of the game.
In the Conference National, Guy Ipoua opened the scoring for Hereford United as they won 2-0 at Crawley Town to put them second in the table. Tristram Whitman led Tamworth's fightback from a 2-0 half time deficit at home to Dagenham & Redbridge with a 48th minute goal. The match finished 2-2.

August 22, 2005

The goals check - part two

In the Conference North, Jamie Paterson scored the only goal of the game as Kettering won 1-0 at Lancaster City, Ben Quailey scored a penalty as Nuneaton won 4-0 at home to Harrogate Town, and Matt Caudwell scored a consolation goal five minutes from the end as Gainsborough Trinity lost 2-1 at Worcester City.
The UniBond First Division saw Wayne Bullimore put Stocksbridge Park Steels in front after five minutes on their way to a 3-0 win at Kidsgrove Athletic.
Finally, in the Northern League First Division, former Rovers midfielder Jon Cullen scored the only goal of the game as Sunderland Nissan won at Whitley Bay.

New ground - all systems go!

The Doncaster Star has today reported that Mowlems have got the contract for the new Community Stadium. We will publish more details shortly, but this long-awaited and welcome news means that construction on the site should begin shortly, meaning that Rovers should be able to move into the new ground in approximately fourteen months' time.

August 20, 2005

Doncaster team news

Doncaster Rovers travel to Swansea City today hoping to pick up their first victory of the season after a disappointing home defeat to Hartlepool United last Saturday. Rovers are likely to be unchanged from that game, with several players unlikely to be considered due to injury. Steve Roberts has a groin injury and will not travel, and Jermaine McSporran and Adriano Rigoglioso remain long-term absentees. Also missing is defender Simon Marples, along with both Danish goalkeepers, Jan Budtz and Tonny Nielsen.
Defender Mark Albrighton has resumed training after recovering from injury, but we do not expect him to be included until he has played in a reserve team game.
Experienced midfielder Uros Predic will not be included in today's squad, as Rovers still await international clearance of his loan transfer. However, Paul Green may be included in the squad after missing last week's game with an ankle injury, but we expect that Ricky Ravenhill will keep his place in the starting eleven.

August 20, 2005

Swansea team news

Swansea City have been hit by the absence of five first team players for this afternoon's game against Doncaster Rovers. A disastrous defeat at Huddersfield sees manager Kenny Jackett without Iriekpen and O'Leary serving three match bans after both were sent off at the Galpharm Stadium, with Monk, Forbes and Robinson absent with injuries. Striker Lee Trundle was reported to have limped out of training complaining of a sore hamstring yesterday, but he is expected to be fit to play, and will continue his striking partnership with ex-Rover Adebayo Akinfenwa, who joined the club during the summer.
Sam Ricketss will play after having a pain-killing injection in a shoulder injury he suffered when playing for Wales on Wednesday.
City have signed Bristol Rovers defender Christian Edwards this week, initially on a one-month loan deal, but it is expected that the move will become permanent if both parties agree.
Swansea will be hoping to stop the steady flow of yellow and red cards which their players have received during the opening games of the season.
Swansea are defending a 100% winning record at their "New Stadium" - but then again, they have only played one match there!

Enough players for now

Rovers' manager Dave Penney has confirmed that no more players are expected to join the club before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. Rovers are still waiting for international clearance for the loan signing of Uros Predic, the Serbia & Montenegro midfielder, who has signed for the club on loan until January, and he is not expected to be available for tomorrow's match at Swansea City.

August 19, 2005

Goals news

The Nationwide Conference had a full set of midweek matches this week, with a number of former Doncaster Rovers players finding the back of the net. Guy Ipoua scored again for Hereford United in their match at Cambridge United, but the Bulls went down 2-1 to the Conference new boys.
Gary Brabin scored the only goal of the game as Halifax Town registered a 1-0 home win over Burton Albion.
Dropping into the Nationwide North, Robert Gill scored twice as Hucknall Town defeated highly rated Harrogate Town 3-1 at Watnall Road.

Walk for leukaemia

Little Ben Roe may not be doing the Rovers' sponsored walk from Doncaster to Barnsley next month - but he will be doing his own sponsored walk at Belle Vue on September 6th along with five other children. Ben has suffered from acute myeloid leukaemia since last October, but has done really well to go through six months of gruelling chemotherapy, and we are glad to learn that he is now in remission.
Ben is only two years old, so a sponsored walk around the pitch at Belle Vue is still quite a challenge to him. Ben and his Mum, Lynne, are raising money to help buying a new £90,000 machine which can detect cancer early to give children a chance of beating the disease.

August 18, 2005

Belles opening day defeat

The Doncaster Rovers Belles had a disappointing opening day result in their National League campaign, when they went down to a 3-1 home defeat against newly promoted Sunderland. Rovers Belles started brightly, but went behind after just ten minutes. Two further goals were conceded before England midfielder Vicky Exley scored the Belles' consolation goal a minute from time.

Predic - kept under wraps

Rovers assistant manager Mickey Walker has spoken of Rovers' determination to keep the signing of Uros Predic a secret until he had signed for the club. Predic signed for the club on loan earlier this week after several days of negotiations, and comes after he has been training with the club since the pre-season matches.
Predic cannot play for Rovers until the deal received international clearance, but that is expected by the end of this week. Walker said:"He's been training with us but we've kept him wrapped up in cotton wool behind close doors. We didn't want another club coming in for him before we had managed to sign him. But we've got him now and he's going to be a tremendous acquisition for us."

August 17, 2005

Predic finally signs

Doncaster Rovers haver finally confirmed that midfielder Uros Predic has signed for the club on loan from Serbian side FK Hajduk Kula. The 32-year old Serbia & Montenegro international has signed on loan, although the period of loan has not been confirmed by Rovers. However, the midfielder cannot play for the club until international clearance has been received.
Predic impressed Dave Penney when appearing for the club during Rovers' pre-season fixtures against Worksop Town and Grimsby Town.

Rovers' reserve side opened their Pontins Holidays season with a victory, with most players who were not involved in Saturday's first team game being supplemented with some youth team players. Lewis Guy opened the scoring after an hour, with the Blades' side equalising three minutes later. Wayne Cunningham scored Rovers' winner barely a minute after coming on to the field as a 70th minute substitute for Craig Nelthorpe. The Rovers side for the game was: Barry Richardson, Dave Mulligan, Adam Green, Robert Pace, Sean McDaid, Richard Offiong, Adam Hughes, Anthony Griffith, Craig Nelthorpe, Lewis Guy, Ben Saunders.
