Rovers confirm Ryan departure

Doncaster Rovers have confirmed that Tim Ryan has left the club by mutual consent. Ryan has not played for the first team since last September owing to an ongoing Achilles tendon injury, and had an operation on the injury just before Christmas.
Tim has been at the club since the year 2000, when he returned to the club from Southport, since when he has made 201 appearances in all first team competitions.
We would like to wish Tim well for his future career, and thank him for his efforts whilst at Doncaster Rovers.

Brabin joins Southport

Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Gary Brabin has signed for Conference bottom club Southport on a contract until the end of the season as they bid to avoid relegation. The 35-year old, who began the season at Halifax Town, watched Southport in their home defeat to Kidderminster on Saturday. He has previously been assistant manager at Witton Albion, and played for Runcorn, Boston United, Chester City, Hull City and Blackpool as well as being assistant manager at Witton Albion and Welsh club Total Network Solutions.

Seremet stays on

Goalkeeper Dino Seremet has extended his loan spell at Tranmere Rovers for a further two months. The 25-year old keeper joined Tranmere at the beginning of January after leaving Belle Vue in December when his one-month loan at Doncaster expired. He has apparently been in outstanding form for Tranmere since arriving, keeping four clean sheets in his five appearances so far. The new loan will keep him at Prenton Park until the end of March.

The third "reunion dinner and charity ball" will be held by Stephen and Beverley Lister's "Sincere Support" charity at the Earl of Doncaster Hotel on Saturday, February 18th. A number of former Rovers players will be guests of honour at the event, which will include a cocktail reception, four course meal and "live" entertainment.
Tickets are available at £26 per person - if anyone is interested, please contact Stephen or Beverley Lister on 01246 819181 or 07976 572406.

Youth Team 0 Bradford City 1

Doncaster Rovers' youth team lost 1-0 at home to Bradford City on Saturday morning, eventually going down to a late goal by Bantams' skipper Paul Denvers, who bundled the ball over the line with only a few minutes to go.
The match had seemed to be destined for a goalless draw until the goal - Rovers had dominated the first half, with Maudslay going close in the opening minutes, but they failed to convert possession and opportunities into goals.
Rovers: Lee Cockerham, Nathan Ireland, Gerard Alonso, Ian Snodin, Rob Pacey, Adam Green, Adam Brown, Liam Green, Danny Maudslay, Adam Lee, Craig Nelthorpe
Substitutes: Aaron Brittain (for Lee, 10), Matthew Noble (for L.Green, 75), Craig Sutton (for Snodin, 67), Alex Harrison, Michael Guilliat

Campbell tries his luck north of the border

Andy Campbell, who spent a month on loan at Belle Vue last season, has signed for Dunfermline Athletic for the remainder of this season. The move to the Scottish Premier League club followed his release from Cardiff City earlier this month. He made his debut for Athletic on Saturday when he came on as a second half subsitute in their 1-1 home draw against Motherwell, a result that keeps his club deep in the relegation battle.

January 30, 2006

Around the goals

We've only noticed a couple of former Rovers players scoring goals this weekend - firstly we must mention Ben Saunders, who celebrated his return to Worksop Town by scoring for them in the seventh minute as they went on to win their home game against Stalybridge Celtic 2-1 in the Conference North. In the Conference National, ex-Rover Rod Thornley, more famed these days for being a masseur for the England squad, scored twice as Altrincham won 5-1 at home to Aldershot to ease their threat of falling into the relegation mire.

Butler back - again!

The evergreen former Rovers goalkeeer Lee Butler has been pressed into service yet again following Halifax Town's already depleted squad being hit by Birmingham City's decision to recall goalkeeepr Adam Legzdins from his loan spell at The Shay. Butler will be in goal for the Halifax first team for the forseeable future, although he admits that he is not the answer to boss Chris Wilder's goalkeeping problem. Halifax are having to work within tight financial constraints, and will be limited to loan signings and free transfers to maintain their challenge for promotion. Their play-off place bid was strengthened on Saturday when Butler played a large part in their 1-0 home win over Forest Green Rovers, which sees them move into third place, eight points behind leaders Accrington Stanley.

Cornforth looks after Gulls

Former Rover John Cornforth has been appointed as caretaker manager at Torquay United following the departure of Leroy Rosenior from the club by mutual consent earlier this week. Cornforth has previously managed Exeter City (successfully guiding them away from relegation to the Conference) and Newport County.
Cornforth played for Rovers on loan from Sunderland during the 1986/87 season, scoring three goals in his six starts for the club. Most of his first team appearances came during a five year spell at Swansea City, where he made over 150 appearances.

January 29, 2006

Darren to Derby

Darren Moore, who played for Doncaster Rovers during the period from 1995 to 1997, has been transferred from West Bromwich Albion to Derby County. The transfer fee will be up to £500,000, with some of this being dependent on performance of both Moore and Derby. Moore has made just nine starts this season, and has moved in search of regular first team football. He has signed a three and a half year contract with the club.

Aberdeen midfielder on trials

Aberdeen's official web site has reported that midfielder Gary Dempsey has travelled down to Rovers for a two day trial. Dempsey has made just nine starts for the Scottish Premier League club, and boss Jimmy Calderwood is trying to revitalise his squad ahead of Tuesday's UEFA transfer deadline. Dempsey is 25 years old and was born in Wexford, Republic of Ireland. He started his career in Scotland with Dunfermline in 2001, staying there until April 2005, when he moved to Aberdeen. Since then he has made 9 starts and 9 substitute appearances out of Aberdeen's 23 League games.

Farewell Ben

Young Doncaster Rovers striker Ben Saunders signed for Conference North side Worksop Town on Thursday for an undisclosed fee. Ben signed for Rovers from Southwell City last summer, but has spent most of the season at Worksop on loan, although he returned just before the end of December to move to Bury on loan. However, he only played two games for them before returning early to Rovers.
We would like to wish Ben all the best for his future football career.

January 28, 2006

Laws denies Ryan move

Scunthorpe United manager Brian Laws has denied that he is interested in signing Rovers defender Tim Ryan, partly due to his recent Achilles tendon injury. Laws recently signed central defender Steve Foster from Rovers after he left Belle Vue by mutual consent, and with Ryan also being believed to have also left the club, speculation in some circles suggested that Ryan, a former Iron player, would make the same move.
However, Laws said: "I can't help you on that one. I know he is available at Doncaster, but he's had a long-term injury, which is no good to us."

January 28, 2006

Richards moves in

Former Doncaster Rovers defender Steve Richards has recently been appointed as manager of Northern Counties East league club Hall Road Rangers, and since his arrival at the club earlier this month, a large turnover of players has already resulted in Rangers registering their first win of the season.
Hall Road's chairman Bob Smailes said: “Everyone at Dene Park is excited about Steve’s arrival. I believe we have acquired one of the best coaches in non-League football and it is fantastic for him to come to us with the position we are in. We are under no illusions that it will be difficult to keep hold of Steve, but I’m sure that in his tenure with us, no matter how long that is, he will take the club forward.”

Fixture change reminder

Finally, we would like to remind you that this afternoon's scheduled League One fixture against Colchester United has been postponed, and will now be played on Tuesday, 21st March (kick-off 7.45pm). The postponement has been caused by Colchester's involvement in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, which is being played this weekend.
The home game against Brentford, which was due to be played over the Christmas period, will now be played on Tuesday, 28th February (kick-off 7.45pm).

Man of the match voting results

With an unsurprisingly reduced number of people voting for the "Man of the Match" for Tuesday evening's game at Blackpool, on-loan striker Ross McCormack emerged ahead of the pack to win the vote. With eight Rovers players receiving nominations, the leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Ross McCormack (42.11%)
2 Mark Albrighton (15.79%)
2 Michael McIndoe (15.79%)
Thank you to everyone who took the trouble to vote. The next vote will open after the next first team game, which is against Swindon Town n Saturday, 4th February.

Rovers and Iron face FA charge

Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United have both been charged by the FA after the melee that developed in the incident that led to the sending off of Rovers' James Coppinger and Scunthorpe striker Steve Torpey in last Saturday's game at Glanford Park.
Rovers boss Dave Penney agreed with the decision to send Coppinger off, but refused to criticise the action of his other playres, which mainly involved verbal altercations.
Rovers have confirmed that they will deny the accusations, and will be taking their case to the FA. Both clubs have until February 7th to respond to the charges.

January 27, 2006

Sean in charge

Following the news earlier this week that AFC Telford United manager Bernard McNally has left the club by mutual consent, the club have confirmed that former Rovers defender Sean Parrish will become caretaker manager at the club, with assistance from former Telford player Anton Joseph.
Parrish was already at the club in charge of their Football in the Community scheme, and played for Rovers between 1994 and 1996, playing over sixty games for the club.

League investigate linesman

The Football League are investigating Neil Yates, who was a linesman in Tuesday evening's game at Bloomfield Road, after he described Blackpool as a team of "donkey lashers" on "Burnley Mad"'s messageboard. The incident has also been reported to the FA, with various messages by Yates criticising the conduct of both sets of supporters.
He is reported to have commented:"It does make you wonder sometimes why we do it. However, last night, as on any other tough game, I consoled myself with the fact that they (the Doncaster supporters) had taken a day off work, spent six hours on congested motorways, eaten less than edible pies for tea, sat on a freezing cold, open stand for two hours, paid up to 20 quid for the privilege, seen their team perform abysmally, and get beaten by a team of donkey-lashers. And to cap it all they wouldn't get home for closing time."
The League have issued the following statement: "The Football League has contacted the official who has agreed to stop his contributions, and we are carrying out further investigations. Neil thought he was being helpful and educational and trying to explain the things that happen to officials during a match. However, we have advised him to stop writing on the site. We don't sweep things like this under the carpet. I have sent this matter on to the FA, who will decide what action to take."

Scunthorpe Reserves 1 Rovers Reserves 2

Rovers registered a second 2-1 victory at Glanford Park in less than a week last night when the reserves beat a strong Scunthorpe reserve side, with Rovers having omitted most of the players who had featured in the League One game at Blackpool the previous evening. Rovers gave Jermaine McSporran another run-out as he continues to recover from injury, and the fact that he was substituted just seven minutes from time suggests that his return to fitness is going well.
Rovers went in front in the 17th minute when Rovers won a free kick 25 yards from goal. Dave Mulligan scored direct from the free kick to give Rovers the lead. The match turned into an end-to-end encounter, with both keepers busy, and Cockerham being called upon to make a good save just before the break.
McSporran went close just after the restart, and Griffith was then denied by a good save from Musselwhite. Rovers extended their lead in the 58th minute when Offiong gained possession inside the Rovers half, passing out wide to Rigoglioso, who took the ball forward before unleasing an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the goal. Scunthorpe pulled a goal back six minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after Nelthorpe had fouled Wilcox - ex-Rover Andy Crosby firing home the spot kick powerfully. Scunthorpe had the majority of the possession in the remainder of the game as they sought the equaliser, but Rovers held out - thanks to two great saves from Cockerham.
Rovers: Cockerham, Mulligan, Pacey, A Green, L Green, McSporran, Thornton, Griffith, Nelthorpe, Offiong, Rigoglioso
Substitutes: Snodin (for Offiong, 73), Lee (for McSporran, 83), Ireland, A Brown, Guilliatt

Penney demands better from defence

Rovers manager Dave Penney has criticised his defence for their performance during Tuesday's disappointing defeat at Blackpool, and is hoping that they will use the ten days until the next first team game to solve those problems. He said: "We had a mad two minutes just before half-time which killed the game off. We looked at the goals, the first came from a long throw and a free header, then a silly free kick, then we don't deal with the bounce and their lad scored an easy goal. There was some poor defending amongst that."

January 26, 2006

Coin Trail update

The Viking Supporters' Co-operative have reported that their collection at half-time at the Blackpool game raised £72.80, a reasonable sum considering the disappointing performance and half-time score. This takes the running total to £43,882.15.

Mulligan named in All-Whites squad

Doncaster Rovers defender David Mulligan has been named in New Zealand's squad for their forthcoming "A" internationals against Malaysia in Christchurch on February 19th and in Albany on February 23rd. However, because these fixtures are not within the FIFA "international window", clubs are not obliged to release the named players, which are planned as the first preparation towards their bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. With eleven European-based players named in the provisional 38-man squad that will be cut down to 20 players for the matches against Malaysia, the full All Whites 2010 World Cup squad is:
Forwards: Campbell Banks (YoungHeart Manawatu), Jeremy Brockie (NZ Knights), Vaughan Coveny (Newcastle Jets), Brent Fisher Canterbury United), Neil Jones (Kuala Lumpur FC), Chris Killen (Oldham Athletic), Shane Smeltz (AFC Wimbledon), Jarrod Smith (Uni of West Virgina), Paul Urlovic (Auckland City)
Midfielders: Andrew Barron (Canterbury United), Leo Bertos (York City), Kris Bouckenhooghe (Roeselare FC/Belgium), Tim Brown (Richmond Kickers), Jeff Campbell (Hendon AFC), Jeremy Christie (NZ Knights), Raf De Gregorio (Team Wellington), Simon Elliott (Fulham FC), Jeff Fleming (Green Gully/Victoria), Noah Hickey (NZ Knights), David Mulligan (Doncaster Rovers), Blair Scoullar (Otago United), Ivan Vicelich (Roda JC), Adrian Webster (Darlington), Michael Wilson (Minnesota Thunder), Craig Wylie (Waitakere United)
Defenders: Andrew Boyens (Otago United), Che Bunce (Waikato FC), Danny Hay (Perth Glory), Tony Lochhead (New England Revolution), Ryan Nelsen (Blackburn Rovers), Steven Old (YoungHeart Manawatu/Uni St Johns), Duncan Oughton (Columbus Crew), James Pritchett (Auckland City), Cole Tinkler (NZ Knights)
Goalkeepers: Simon Eaddy (Waitakere United), Glen Moss (NZ Knights), Ross Nicholson (Auckland City), Mark Paston (St Johnstone/Scotland).

January 25, 2006

Blackpool 4 Rovers 2

In a game which was widely agreed as being the poorest performance of the season, Rovers went down 4-2 at Bloomfield Road to a struggling Blackpool side. Blackpool played the conditions better than Rovers, and their physical size seemed to prove that Rovers need to look around for some bigger players if they are going to consistently compete with these sort of sides. Rovers went behind in the 19th minute as a long throw into the box was headed home in style by Butler at the near post. Rovers equalised nine minutes later with a penalty from McIndoe after a Blackpool player handled a powerfully hit cross, but the game was lost when the home side scored twice in 90 seconds just before half time thanks to some poor Rovers defending.
Rovers brought on Leo Fortune-West in place of leading scorer Paul Heffernan at half time in an effort to combat the Blackpool's superiority in the air, but things got worse as they went 4-1 behind in the 54th minute. Whilst Rovers did improve at times, they did not threaten the home keeper until the last minute of the game when Ross McCormack scored his first goal in a Rovers shirt - the only bright spot in a dismal evening for Rovers fans.
In the meantime, the "Man of the Match" voting has now closed. Thank you to everyone who has voted - we'll let you know the result on Friday morning.

Campbell leaves Cardiff

Andy Campbell finally departed from Cardiff City yesterday after agreeing a package to pay off the remainder of his contact at the club. Campbell became a hero at Ninian Park after scoring the play-off final goal that took Cardiff into the Championship in 2003, but since signing on a full transfer during that summer, failed to justify the £950,000 fee paid to Middlesbrough. He played a month on loan at Rovers, but failed to make any impact - and earlier this season spent a loan period on loan at Oxford, but similarly failed to make a major impression.
Campbell has been linked with a move to Newport County, but despite indications last week that he had signed in time to play last weekend, we notice that he was not included in their match squad.
However, Campbell said: "I've confidence in my ability, I still have a lot to offer a Football League club."

Price signs for Rovers

Hull City midfielder Jason Price has been transferred from Hull City to Doncaster Rovers for what is described as a nominal fee. The 28-year old Welshman has signed on a two and a half year contract, and leaves the KC Stadium after being part of theri squad that has enjoyed successive promotions in the last two seasons.
The move has been widely tipped for months, but it was only after Peter Taylor could not promise him first team football next season that a move away from the Championship club became inevitable. Price has played in several of Hull's recent games, so the move at this stage was somewhat of a surprise.
Unfortunately Price was not signed in time to play in this evening's away game at Blackpool, but is likely to have to wait to make his Rovers debut at Swindon Town on February 4th, as Rovers have no fixture this weekend, owing to Colchester United still being involved in the FA Cup.

Rovers team news

Rovers are likely to make minimal changes to their squad for this evening's away game at Blackpool, with Ricky Ravenhill completing his two match ban after picking up ten yellow cards so far this sason. Dropping out will be James Coppinger, who starts a three match suspension after being sent off for violent conduct at the end of Saturday's away game at Scunthorpe.
Apart from that, we expect the squad to be the same as on Saturday, although Rovers have yet to release any squad news.
Definitely missing will be longer-term absentees Andy Warrington, Jan Budtz, Barry Richardson, Simon Marples, Stephen Roberts, Phil McGuire, Jermaine McSporran and Neil Roberts. After Saturday's match it was reported that Michael McIndoe and Graeme Lee are slight doutbts with hamstring strains, but we expect both to play tonight.
With no other League One fixtures this evening, Rovers could climb to tenth place, just five points behind the play-offs.

January 24, 2006

Blackpool team news

Relegation-threatened Blackpool are strengthened by the arrival of Njazi Kuqi and Marcus Bean at the club. Kuqi arrives on a month's loan from Birmingham City, and Bean completed his permanent switch to Bloomfield Road from Queens Park Rangers on Monday. Danny Warrender, who has been on loan at the club from Manchester City, has now signed a full transfer.
However, Blackpool will be missing Gareth Evans (knee), Danny Coid (ankle), Jamie Burns (ankle) and Phil Doughty, with Ciaran Donnelly facing a fitness test today.
Former Rover John Doolan will not take part in the game however, having departed for League Two side Rochdale on loan, with a view to a permanent transfer.
Blackpool start off the day in 21st place, just a point ahead of Rotherham United and Swindon Town. A win for them would seen them draw level with Bristol City, and keep alive their glimmer of a chance of avoiding relegation.

January 24, 2006

Graeme's the winner

Centre back Graeme Lee, no doubt aided by the memories of his late "wonder-goal", swept to a clear victory in the "Man of the Match" voting for Saturday's away game at Scunthorpe United, gaining just short of half of all the votes cast. With a total of nine Rovers players receiving nominations, the leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Graeme Lee (49.37%)
2 Mark Albrighton (21.52%)
3 Ross McCormack (8.86%)
4 Michael McIndoe (7.59%)
We thank everyone for taking the time and trouble to take part, apart from the person who attempted a massive multiple vote in favour of Paul Heffernan, whose votes were all eliminated from the poll.
The next vote will be opening later this evening, following the conclusion of the away game at Blackpool, which is being broadcast "live" on BBC Radio Sheffield.

January 24, 2006

Two leave?

We understand that left back Tim Ryan has left Doncaster Rovers "by mutual consent", although an official statement has yet to be released. Ryan re-joined Rovers in the year 2000, and has been a popular player during his time at Belle Vue. He has, however, been absent with an achilles tendon injury for much of this season, and was not expected to return to playing for another few weeks.
We also notice that Adriano Rigoglioso has been removed from the Rovers squad on the official site, although again, no official statement has been released. He has struggled to win a place in the Rovers side since his arrival from Morecambe two years ago, and is expected to leave the club at the end of his contract in the summer. However, does the omission of his name from the squad list indicate he has already done so?

January 23, 2006

Penney delighted with win

Rovers manager Dave Penney spoke of his delight on registering the "double" over near rivals Scunthorpe United on Saturday afternoon, and felt tht his side were "good value" for their win. Praising the performance of debutant Ross McCormack and skipper Michael McIndoe, he also said: "We are delighted with three points. I always thought we looked more likely to snatch the winner. We are on the right path and we now need to build up our momentum which had slipped after the Arsenal game. To come here and get a result like this is great. The late flare up (Coppinger and Torpey's red card incident) is what you can expect in a local derby."

Save the Silkmen

You may have read a recent story in the news that League Two club Macclesfield Town have been hit by an order from the FA to pay in the region of £300,000 in relation to offences of previous owners of the club for money received to build a new stand at Moss Rose.
Since then various fund-raising appeals have been made, but they still face a huge amount to be raised by the end of the month. If the money is not raised, the club face insolvency, so they have written to many football fans to help them raise the money in their darkest hour of need.
We have published their appeal, in full, on a separate page - click on the Macclesfield logo to the left to read their appeal. Hopefully the club will raise enough money to enable their survival.

January 21, 2006

Scunthorpe 1 Rovers 2

Doncaster Rovers completed their second"double" of the season today (the first was over Swansea City) after a late goal grabbed all the points, when at one time it looked likely that Rovers would leave Glanford Park empty handed. An even first half ended with both sides not troubling the goalkeepers unduly, although the home strike partnership of Sharp and Keogh did cause the Rovers defence some problems. Rovers gave on-loan striker Ross McCormack his debut at the expense of Lewis Guy, and the young Glaswegian showed glimpses of very promising things to come.
Rovers went behind just three minutes after the break when the defence allowed Scunthorpe far too much room to cross the ball in from the left, allowing Jim Goodwin a free header from eight hards out, giving Blayney no chance of keeping the ball out. Rovers were not playing anywhere near their best, and with many passes going astray, it looked most unlikely that they would score.
The goal, when it came was a beauty. Rovers were awareded a free kick midway inside their own half, which was taken by Blayney. His long punt upfield evaded the back line of the home defence, and McIndoe volleyed home in style from six yards. Route one maybe, but a great goal.
The goal inspired Rovers, whose performance improved greatly for a short period. The game then seemed destined for a draw until a final eventful three or four minutes. The 89th minute had come and gone, when Rovers won a corner on the right. That corner came to nothing, but as Scunthorpe cleared the ball it fell to Graeme Lee 25 to 30 yards out, and he hit a sweet volley which flew into the net past a stunned and bemused Scunthorpe goalkeeper.
That was not the end of the action - seconds later a bad late tackle by James Coppinger earned him a straight red card, with most players involved in a brawl which also saw Scunthorpe's Steve Torpey sent off for throwing a punch. Rovers held on comfortably for the three points, which lifts them up to twelfth in the table, only eight points behind sixth placed Barnsley.
The "Man of the Match" voting has now closed. Thank you to everyone who voted - we'll let you know the result on Tuesday morning.

Youth team 0 Lincoln City 0

Doncaster Rovers' youth team fought out a goalless draw with Lincoln City yesterday morning, with many of the players who had played in the reserve team game between the two sides during the week taking part again - although Rovers were without Anthony Griffith and Craig Nelthorpe, both of who made the trip to Scunthorpe with the first team squad.
Rovers: Cockerham, Snodin, Alonso, Ireland, Pacey, Noble, Brown, L Green, Maudslay, Brittain, Matthews
Substitutes: Harrison, A Lee, A Green, Sutton, Guilliatt

Mulligan in NZ call-up?

New Zealand are to play a couple of international fixtures next month, their first at home in more than three and a half years! New Zealand last played at home in July 2002 when they defeated Australia. They aim to play as many as ten inernationals a year in the lead-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and are hoping to play games at Crystal Palace in July, as well as against a number of sides who have qualified for the World Cup.
The two matches next month are scheduled for Sunday, February 19th and Thursday, February 23rd. Rovers' David Mulligan has been included in most of the recent New Zealand squads, and were he to be selected, could miss Rovers' games against Gillingham and Hartlepool United. New Zealand have been reported to have already approached Blackburn and Fulham for the release of players, but the clubs are understood to be likely to refuse to release them. Clubs are not obliged to release players as the two matches do not fall within the FIFA international match window - so were Mulligan to be selected, Rovers could decline to release him.

January 22, 2006

Goals time

It's a brief list of former Rovers players scoring goals yesterday - but we'll start in League Two, where Ben Futcher scored in the 80th minute on his debut for Grimsby Town as they drew 2-2 at Torquay. In the Conference, Guy Ipoua scored Hereford United's winner as they won at home 2-1 against Crawley Town, and in the Conference North, former youth team player Michael Rankine scored for Alfreton in their 2-1 home win over Worksop Town.

January 21, 2006

Sold out!

Doncaster Rovers have sold all their allocation of tickets for this lunchtime's away match at Scunthorpe United. The match is all-ticket, so no-one without a ticket will be able to obtain one at either ground today. This means that Rovers will be supported by about 2,100 fans today, where they will probably see the Rovers debut of Rangers striker Ross McCormack - and the Scunthorpe debut of ex-Rovers skipper Steve Foster.

January 21, 2006

Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers are likely to name a virtually unchanged squad from the Chesterfield game for this lunch-time's away game at Glanford Park - with just young striker Ross McCormack added, who was signed on loan from Rangers during the last week, and will stay at Rovers for the rest of the season.
Ricky Ravenhill serves the second of a two match suspension, although Richard Offiong will be available, as the suspension he has collected due to a red card in the reserves on Wednesday does not start until the next game.
Michael McIndoe has trained this week after being substituted due to experiencing a tight hamstring last Saturday, and the new team captain is expected to be fit to start the game.
The on-going injury situation remains unchanged from last weekend, when Rovers had just sixteen fit players to select from. Jermaine McSporran played half of Wednesday's reserve team game at Lincoln, but will not feature at first team level for a while owing to the length of time he has been out injured.
Rovers will regard this fixture, which they have not lost for the last fifteen years, as a crucial fixture to win to help their chase for the play-off places, which are still only eight points away.

Scunthorpe team news

Scunthorpe are giving little away about their likely team for today's game against Rovers - apart from the fact that ex-Rovers skipper Steve Foster is virtually certain to play. Foster's place in the team is assured with centre-back Andy Butler ruled out for almost the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered at Bristol City last weekend. The Iron expect to have midfielders Ian Baraclough and Jim Goodwin back in the squad today. With four out of Scunthorpe's next six games being at home, they will be hoping to turn their recent sequence of five draws into victories to ease their relegation fears.
United boss Brian Laws said, "
It's a local derby with one of our fiercest rivals and we want to turn things round. We've slipped down the table when our performances haven't really warranted it. We under-achieved badly at their place earlier this season and virtually gave them the points. We'd like to turn back the clock if we could, but hopefully we can put it right on Saturday."

Rovers eye Clingan?

The Doncaster Free Press has reported that Dave Penney has made enquiries about signing Wolves' midfielder Sammy Clingan. Clingan has just completed a very successful loan spell at Chesterfield, playing the final match of his loan against Rovers last Saturday.
He had been expected to sign for Nottingham Forest, with the two clubs having agreed a fee, understood to be in the region of £100,000. The deal fell through when the player was unable to agree personal terms with Forest.
Whilst Penney confirmed an interest, he commented: "We are keeping an eye on the situation but I am not too hopeful. If Forest can't reach agreement with him, I'm doubtful whether we can."

Campell shock move

Andy Campbell, who joined Rovers on a month's loan last season, has moved for Newport County on loan from Cardiff City, after his fortunes at Ninian Park continue to plummet. A more recent spell at Oxford United failed to jump-start his career, and he returned to Cardiff after Christmas. Whilst the move to Newport is on loan, it is understood that Cardiff are willing to pay up Campbell's contract, and the move could become permanent.
Campbel became a hero at Cardiff after scoring their crucial play-off goal in 2002, which earned him a full tranfer to the club from Middlesbrough for just under £1 million.
Campbell is understood to have signed in time to play for Newport against Eastleigh tomorrow.

Search for oldest and youngest fan

A photography student at Manchester Metropolitan University, John Tunnicliffe, is undertaking a project about the unique bond between supporters and their football clubs for the final year of his degree.
He would like to photograph Rovers' oldest and youngest supporter for his project, together with any memorabilia the oldest supporter may have. Rovers would also like to take this opportunity to establish who their oldest living supporter is, and do an article for the match day programme based on an interview and the tremendous memories that supporter must have accumulated. This is a particularly appropriate time as Rovers will be leaving Belle Vue, their home for the last 84 years, in the near future, and would like to know who can trace back their support at this hallowed old ground the furthest.
If you think you would qualify and would like to be involved, or you would like to nominate someone, please contact Andy Liney by e-mail at andy.liney@virgin.net, by telephone on 01777 703757, or by post to Doncaster Rovers at Belle Vue, Bawtry Road, Doncaster, DN4 5HT.

Foster to Scunny

Scunthorpe United's official web site have announced that they expect to sign former Rovers skipper Steve Foster later today on an 18-month contract. Foster left Rovers last week - and is set to make his Iron debut on Saturday against the Rovers.

Foster in Iron switch?

Both the Doncaster and Scunthorpe evening newspapers yesterday reported that it is likely that former Rovers captain Steve Foster, who left Rovers "by mutual consent" last week, will sign for Scunthorpe United. Scunthorpe have been hit by an injury to central defender Andy Butler, who is likely to be ruled out for the next two or three months and it is possible that Foster may be signed in time to face Rovers in the local derby at Glanford Park on Saturday.

Lincoln City 3 Rovers Reserves 1

With the first team struggling to name sixteen players on Saturday, it was no surprise that Rovers included a number of youth team players in their squad for yesterday's reserve team game against Lincoln City.
Making a welcome return to playing was Jermaine McSporran - his first match since March 2005, when he badly injured his knee in Rovers' match against Bradford City.
Less welcome was the news that both sides finished with ten men. Rovers had Richard Offiong sent off for an apparent head-butt, which earned him a straight red card. According to our interpretation of the rules, Offiong will be suspsended for three first team matches, starting from 14 days time, meaning he will miss the first team matches against Swindon Town, Barnsley and Chesterfield.
Bookings in reserve team games only count in the reserve league, as do dismissals for second yellow card offences, so the Lincoln player will not be banned from first team games.
Rovers: Lee Cockerham, Nathan Ireland, Liam Green, Adam Hughes, Rob Pacey, Adam Green, Jermaine McSporran, Anthony Griffiths, Adriano Rigoglioso, Brighton Mugadza, Richard Offiong
Substitutes: Ian Snodin, Michael Guillait, Mattie Noble, Adam Lee, Andy Matthews

Barrick leaves Hucknall

Former Doncaster Rovers left back Dean Barrick has left his position as manager of Hucknall Town after a meeting between Barrick and Hucknall's chairman, Brian Holmes.
Dean has been unable to play since Hucknall's FA Trophy Final appearance at the end of last season, where he suffered a bad fracture to his leg. That break is taking a long time to heal, and he is shortly to enter hospital to have the leg re-broken and set again, which will keep him out of action for several more weeks.
However, it is the disciplinary problems that have probably proved to be the reason for his departure from the dug-out. Barrick has been dismissed three times, and asked to leave the dugout on another occasion, which has resulted in the club receiving a strongly worded letter of concern from the FA.
Hucknall have thanked Dean for his time over the last season, and when fully recovered from his injury, the club are to organise a testimonial game on his behalf.

McCormack aims high

Rovers' new on-loan striker Ross McCormack has expressed his delight at coming to Doncaster for the rest of the season, and hopes to score several goals for the club. McCormack commented: "I'm here to try to score goals for Doncaster and shoot them up the league. I'm not guaranteed a place but I want to score and do well for myself and the club. When I heard about the interest I wanted to come down straight away. I know what the club is all about - they're a good football club and I can't wait to start training."
It is likely that he will make his debut for Rovers against Scunthorpe on Saturday.

New fixture dates

Rovers have agreeed a new date with Colchester United for the game at Belle Vue, which was originally due to be played on 28th January, but had to be postponed due to Colchester's continuing involvement in the FA Cup.
The game will now be played on Tuesday, 21st February, with a 7.45pm kick-off.
The home game against Brentford, which was postponed from 28th December due to freezing weather conditions, has been re-arranged for Tuesday, 28th February (kick-off 7.45pm)

Darby to be released

Ex-Rovers striker Duane Darby has been told that he will not be offered a new contract for next season, as he does not feature in manager Gary Peters' long-term plans.
Peters, who is also releasing Ben Smith at the end of the season, said, "They've both been great with me, they're great lads and nice to have around the place. Every time they've put on a Shrewsbury shirt they've tried to do well for us so I'll try and do well for them. They're talking to people and if something comes up they like I'll make sure they get the chance to go."

Turnbull to Southport

Former Rover Lee Turnbull has been appointed as assistant manager at Conference National's bottom club, Southport. Turnbull replaces Neil Whalley, who resigned earlier in the season - the appointment marks his return to football management after being sacked as manager at Nationwide North club Barrow earlier in the campaign.
He had a long playing career, which took in Rovers, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United, and clocked up over 300 first team appearances.

Newell to meet FA

Former Rovers striker Mike Newell, now manager at Luton Town, is due to meet FA officials today to follow up his allegations that illegal payments are being made in many transfer dealings. Whilst sticking to his claims, Newell admitted: "It's word of mouth. It's in my head, so I don't know if it's going to be any use at all."
With some in the football industry being openly sceptical as to whether Newell has enough evidence to stop the practice, including former Spurs chairman Alan Sugar and football agent Dennis Roach,, Newell commented, " "It will need somebody very strong to support me but nobody can question my integrity. Nobody at the FA can put me on a disrepute charge. The problem is if it's swept aside and there's nobody in the game to investigate. I will be very disappointed if I'm hung out to dry on this. If you feel passionate and believe in something, then you have to say it - and I've said it. If this causes me a problem in terms of my career, there's something seriously wrong in football."

Man of the Match

Rovers' leading goalscorer, Paul Heffernan, won the latest "Man of the Match" vote this week, gaining a little over 40% of all votes cast. A total of nine Rovers players received nominations, but the following three were the only realistic candidates, gaining over 88% of all the votes between them.
1 Paul Heffernan (41.56%)
2 Graeme Lee (32.47%)
3 Mark Albrighton (14.29%)
It was pleasing to see Rovers fans recognise the contribution of debutant Graeme Lee, who joined last week from Sheffield Wednesday, and his partnership with Mark Albrighton looked very promising. Thank you to everyone who voted - the next vote will follow Saturday's away game at Scunthorpe United.

Rankine moves on

Former Doncaster Rovers youth team striker Michael Rankine has moved clubs again, and has signed for Nationwide North club Alfreton Town from Armthorpe Welfare. Rankine, 20, left Rovers to join Nationwide North club Barrow, before being given his big chance at Scunthorpe United, but failed to hold down a regular first team place, and spent the earlier part of this season back at Barrow.

Coin trail

The Viking Supporters' Co-operative havve announced that they raised a total of £518.92 for the "Coin Trail" at Saturday's game against Chesterfield, with £244.84 being raised in the Viking Bar, and £274.08 inside the ground. This means that the total raised for the Coin Trail, which is helping to contribute to the costs fo running the Rovers youth team, is now £43,809.35.
There will be no collection at the match at Scunthorpe United on Saturday, as Scunthorpe have refused permission.

Falana leaves

Ex-Rovers striker Wade Falana, who played four times for the club in the 1992/93 season, has left Bromley after what is described as a "post-match incident in the dressing room" following the Lillywhites' 3-1 defeat at Chelmsford. Manager George Wakeling refused to be drawn on the nature of the incident, saying, "We will keep that in house. Wade helping us gain promotion and has also been a vital figure for us this season. I wish him all the best."
Falana has had a long list of clubs, mainly non-league during his career. He started off at Millwall, then joined Leytonstone and Tooting & Mitcham before joining Rovers. Since then, apart from brief stays at Chesterfield and Sheffield United, all of his career has been spent in non-league in the south-east, with at least 21 changes of club (that we know of!) in his entire career.

Rovers sign McCormack

Doncaster Rovers have signed 19-year old striker Ross McCormack on loan from Glasgow Rangers. He has made three starts and eight substitute appearances this season in the Scottish Premier League, with two SPL goals to his name. He played in last Saturday's Scottish FA Cup game against Peterhead, and scored one of Rangers' five goals that day.
McCormack joined Rangers as a trainee in 2003, and made his first team debut against Motherwell in May 2004. He is described on Rangers' official web site as: "The livewire forward may be small in stature but he has a big heart and a never-say-die attitude that has impressed all the club's coaching staff."
He also has Champions League experience, scoring in Rangers' 1-1 draw against Porto in November 2005.

Penney rues lost points

Dave Penney reflected on Saturday's 1-1 home draw against Chesterfield, and thought that his side were unlucky not to pick up all the points. He commented: "Things are not going our way at the moment and it's not the first match where we've not been able to build after opening the scoring. But we can't afford to become anxious. We just need to get back to winning ways as quickly as we can. I thought we should have had a couple of penalties and just edged the game but it wasn't to be. The problem was that although we were on top we didn't really create enough chances to trouble their keeper."
He praised the abilities of striker Paul Heffernan, saying that ""The goal we did score was an excellent finish. I've been telling people for a long time just what a good striker Paul Heffernan is and now they better start believing because he was the man of the match without doubt."

It's goals time

Our look at former Doncaster Rovers players finding their way onto the goal scoring lists over the weekend begin in League Two, where Richie Barker scored from the penalty spot for Mansfield, as they went down to a 2-1 defeat at Grimsby Town. Also in League Two, Kevin McIntyre scored for Macclesfield Town as they drew 1-1 at home to Oxford United.
In the Conference North, Mark Hume scored Alfreton Town's first goal as they picked up a 3-2 home win against Hednesford Town. Hume has been out of action for about a year after suffering a badly broken leg.
Finally, John McGrath celebrated his debut for Weymouth in the Nationwide South by scoring their second goal as they won 2-0 at home to Eastleigh, enabling his side to move three points clear at the top of the table.

Miller turns down move

Former Doncaster Rovers skipper Barry Miller has turned down what has been described as a "lucrative offer" from Ilkeston Town to stay at Conference North club Worksop Town. After the Derbyshire club expressed an interest, Miller spoke to them, but confirmed afterwards that he would be staying at Sandy Lane.

Youth team 2 Scunthorpe 1

The youth team picked up another win in the Football League Youth Alliance on Saturday when registering a 2-1 win over near rivals Scunthorpe United at Cantley Park. Despite having two early goals disallowed due to offside decisions, Rovers went in front, when a cross in from the right by Liam Green was diverted into his own net by Scunthorpe's Jack Francis. Rovers increased their lead three minutes before the break when Adam Brown latched onto a through ball from Liam Green to slot the ball past the advancing keeper.
Scunthorpe fought back in the second half and reduced the deficit in the 80th minute when Adam Deaking chipped the ball over Lee Cockerham and into the Rovers net.
