Ryan - Penney not bound for the KC

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan effectively poured cold water on the flames of the rumours linking Dave Penney with the vacant manager's job at Hull City.
John commented: "Dave Penney won't be going to Hull; talk of him being in the frame is pure press speculation. Hull City chairman Adam Pearson is a good friend of mine and he would have told me if he was interested in Dave. As it turns out we were talking about the situation at Hull recently if Peter Taylor left and I know the man he wants and it is not Dave Penney."
Interestingly, Ryan went on to say: "I can see why Dave's name has been linked to other clubs in view of his record. But the honest truth is that no club has ever made an approach to me while he has been in charge. That might seem strange to some people but that is the situation."
In what may be a significant move yesterday, newly promoted Colchester United were reeling after their manager, Phil Parkinson, resigned. Parkinson has been linked to several jobs recently, but Colchester turned down approaches to talk to him from Charlton, Ipswich and Derby.

Collin stays at the Reds

Former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Adam Collin has signed a new contract with Nationwide Conference North club Workington Reds after impressing throughout last season. Jamie leaves Poppies

Ex-Doncaster Rovers winger Jamie Paterson has been released by Kettering Town - one of nine players to leave as the Conference North club prepare to move onto a full-time basis. Paterson joined the club two years ago - leaving briefly earlier this season during the "Paul Gascoigne" period - when the club attempted to go full time - returning only after the departure of Gascoigne. Jamie holds a coaching job at Halifax Town, and is unwilling to take up a full time contract with Kettering.
Paterson made 85 league starts for Rovers between 2000 and 2003, scoring 31 goals.

Another vacancy, another rumour. . . . . . .

Yesterday's news that Peter Taylor has left Hull City to become manager at Crystal Palace began the inevitable series of rumours as to who Hull have in mind to take over from the England under-21 coach. Rovers' boss Dave Penney is being mentioned as one of the leading contenders, along with former Brentford manager Martin Allen, Colchester's Phil Parkinson, ex-Southampton boss Stuart Gray and Southend's Steve Tilson. However, the current favourite, for what it's worth, is said to be former Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy.
Hull will be asking for £250,000 in compensation from Palace for Taylor, who had twelve months remaining on his Hull contract.

Colin scores against old team mates

Former Rovers defender Colin Hawkins scored Shelbourne's first goal in their recent 2-0 win over Bohemians in the Irish Premier League. Hawkins, who played for Rovers between 2000 and 2002, was transferred from Bohemians to Shelbourne in November 2004. He was the PFAI Young Player of the Year for the 1997/98 season whilst playing for St Patrick's Athletic.

June 14, 2006
Dino released

Former Doncaster Rovers striker Dino Maamria is one of seven players to have been released by Nationwide Conference National side Stevenage Borough at the end of last season. Maamria re-signed for Borough in September 2003 after a short spell in the United States, but Boro's failure to make the Conference play-offs led to the mass exodus, including a change of manager.
Dino scored ten goals for Rovers, starting in ten league games between 1998 and 2000.

Goals time!

We may be a month into the close season, but they're still playing football in Ireland, where their season is around a dozen matches old. Last Sunday saw Sligo Rovers defeat Longford Town 3-1, a result that leaves Sligo sixth in the Eircom Premier Division (out of twelve clubs). Former Doncaster Rovers left back Keith Foy, who joined the club in January, scored one of the goals from the penalty spot.

Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Jason Blunt has completed a transfer from Alfreton Town to Grantham Town. Jason spent the latter part of the 2005/06 season on loan at Scarborough, his second spell at the club.

Penney happy with signings so far

Rovers boss Dave Penney has said that he is very happy with the success the club have had in the transfer market this summer, with five players joining the club in the early part of the summer break - a marked contrast with the last few summers.
Penney commented: "We're quite happy we have fetched five in quite early. We are quite pleased with the acquisitions we have made at the moment. It's important to get the players in to the club because we knew Championship teams were looking at them. We got it done and dusted to stop them being tapped up by the top clubs in the Championship that perhaps were thinking about it."
Rovers' signings so far this summer are Adam Lockwood, James O'Connor, Gareth Roberts, Kevin Horlock and Bruce Dyer.

June 12, 2006
Away days for Mickey

Mickey Walker, Rovers' new Director of Football, will not be at many first team matches next season - because he'll be working! Part of his new role will involve scouting potential transfer targets, and that will include watching them in action at first team games. This will inevitably mean that he will be unable to be at Rovers first team games on a number of occasions. Dave Penney explained: "It's very difficult for me to watch players at any level because we're always working. Mickey will be going away on Saturdays if we're away or even if we're at home, to look at specific players that we want to bring in next year, playing at the level or at a higher level in a proper first team game."

Swans failure costs the Gulls

Former Doncaster Rovers winger Jermaine Wright has left Leeds United after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent. The 30-year old, who joined Leeds from Ipswich Town two seasons ago, only made three appearances for the club last season, and 40 in total. During that time, he also spent time on loan at Millwall and Southampton.
Jermaine was signed on loan for Rovers from Wolverhampton Wanderers by Sammy Chung during the 1995/96 season and made ten first team appearances for the club.

Fans face jail after clash in Rotherham

A recent story in the Doncaster Star reported that nine football hooligans were facing a prison sentence after a clash in Rotherham town centre at the end of the 2004/05 season. The situation arose after some Rovers fans were denied entry to the game at Stockport County, and were put on a train back to Doncaster. They clashed with supporters of Sheffield United in Rotherham, and were captured on CCTV. All nine admitted the charge of violent disorder, with those described as being Rovers fans being Ian Wilson, Paul Hirst, Paul Swift, Robert Johnson and Ben Durkin.

During the next few weeks we will let you know the final results for the season, and as is the custom, we will announce the results in reverse order. Another Rovers pre-season game

The Doncaster Free Press have reported that Doncaster Rovers are to visit Hatfield Main for a pre-season friendly, although the date has yet to be confirmed. Rovers have promised to send a team to Hatfield, although unlike the confirmation of the Retford United game, it looks unlikely that Dave Penney will be sending the first team. Sheffield United and Lincoln United have also said that they will send teams to play Hatfield this summer.

June 10, 2006
McGuire set for Rovers talks

Rovers defender Phil McGuire is due to have talks with officials from Doncaster Rovers to discuss his future at the club. McGuire, who was transfer listed at the end of last season, was sentenced at Pontefract Magistrates Court to 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to common assault. With McGuire not being given a squad number for next season, unlike the other transfer listed players, it looks highly likely that McGuire will leave the club in the near future.

June 10, 2006
Redfearn to stay at Seadogs

Scarborough boss Neil Redfearn has confirmed that he intends to stay at the club despite their relegation to the Nationwide North, and the ten points deduction which was imposed on them due to the rescheduling of their CVA. Redfearn took over midway through last season, but was unable to stop the club ending at the bottom of the Conference National table.
The former Rovers midfielder said: "I plan to stay on at the club and to help turn our fortunes around."

June 9, 2006
McSporran to Chester

Rovers winger Jermaine McSporran signed for Chester City yesterday after being released at the end of his Rovers contract this summer. The move follows an injury hit 2005/06 season, which saw Jermaine out of action after suffering a bad knee injury against Bradford City, resulting in only two first team appearances at the end of the campaign. The 29-year old spent a month on loan at Boston United last season, and has also played for Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford. We would like to wish Jermaine well for the future, and thank him for his efforts during his time at Rovers.

June 9, 2006
Rovers won't be held to ransom

Doncaster Rovers have failed in their attempt to sign highly rated Rotherham United midfielder Lee Williamson. Reports suggest that Rovers initially offered two players in exchange for Williamson - then offered £100,000 plus a player, who Rotherham United manager Alan Knill later confirmed as being Ricky Ravenhill. Rovers manager Dave Penney said "We have our own valuation of players and we are not prepared to pay over the odds."
However, Rotherham are unlikely to hang on to Williamson for long, with a bid of £150,000 being received from another League club in the last 24 hours.

June 9, 2006

June 8, 2006
Penney denies interest

Dave Penney has denied that Doncaster Rovers are interested in signing Hartlepool United's teenage right back Darren Williams, who put in a transfer request following their relegation at the end of last season. Penney commented: "We've just paid £130,00 for James O'Connor from Bournemouth, so right-back is the last position we are looking at. I don't know where that rumour has come from but we are certainly not interested in any right-backs."

June 8, 2006
Danny lands new deal

UniBond League Division One club Belper Town have confirmed that former Rovers player Danny Hudson has agreed terms for a contract that keeps him at the club for another season. Hudson joined Belper in the summer of 2004 from Halifax Town and has been an "inspirational performer" since joining the club.
Belper's manager Ernie Moss, another former Rover, said: “Danny always stated his desire to remain at Christchurch Meadow but he wanted to make sure that we have clear plans to improve upon last season’s ninth place finish before he committed himself for another year. But I was able to confirm that following agreement with the directors on the playing budget for next season, I will have the scope the improve the quality of the squad for next term.”

Penney: search for players goes on

Despite Rovers having made five signings during the summer break, Rovers boss Dave Penney has confirmed that there are still plans to strengthen the squad even further by the start of next season. Sheffield United striker Bruce Dyer became Rovers' fifth capture of the close season when he signed for the club last Thursday, but Penney said: "We have five new faces already added and John Ryan and I will continue to look for the quality we need."

June 7, 2006
Another former Rover for Latics

Following on from the news that former Rovers midfielder John Sheridan has been appointed manager of Oldham Athletic subsequent to Ronnie Moore's departure, another former Rover has been installed as Sheridan's assistant manager.
Tommy Wright, who made 28 appearances for Rovers between 1998 and 2000, has been appointed as Sheridan's assistant, having also previously played alongside him at Leeds United. Sheridan said: "I always said that if I went into management I would take him with me. Tommy has a terrific record at bringing young players through this club and, like myself, is very excited about the future."

June 7, 2006
Ricky for Mariners?

Doncaster Rovers midfielder Ricky Ravenhill has been reported to be interesting Grimsby Town, according to the Grimsby Telegraph. New Mariners boss Graham Rodger is reported to be set to make Ravenhill his first signing since being appointed as Russell Slade's successor late last week.
Rotherham United have previously been reported to be set to make an offer for the 25-year old midfield player, with Lincoln City being also understood to be monitoring the situation.

June 6, 2006
McGuire sentence

Doncaster Rovers defender Phil McGuire was handed a sentence of 100 hours community service yesterday when he appeared at Pontefract Magistrates Court. McGuire had previously pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife at their home in Castleford, and had been warned that a custodial sentence was possible.
The Scottish newspaper, the "Daily Record" reports that McGuire and his wife are now planning to return to Scotland. he had been transfer listed by Rovers before they were aware of the assault charge hanging over him, and it looks highly likely that Rovers will terminate his contract in the near future.

Mulligan plays against Brazilians

Dave Mulligan played for just over an hour of Sunday evening's match when New Zealand faced the favourites for the World Cup, Brazil, and provided some of the few physical challenges on the Brazilians. The All-Whites lasted until almost half time before Ronaldo opened the scoring, with another following just after half time. Thanks to their goalkeeper, Glen Moss, the score remained at 2-0 until five minutes from the end, when two goals gave the Brazilians a more flattering 4-0 final score.
The match marked Mulligan's final match for his country whilst still technically on Rovers' books - he returns to the country to become a Scunthorpe player today.

June 6, 2006
Leo for Halifax?

The Yorkshire Post has reported that Halifax Town manager Chris Wilder is interested in signing Doncaster Rovers striker Leo Fortune-West to bolster their chances of promotion back to the Football League following their disappointment of defeat in the Conference play-off final earlier this month. Fortune-West was one of six players to be released by Dave Penney at the end of last season.

June 5, 2006
Penney pleased at Dyer capture

Rovers manager Dave Penney revealed that Rovers had to pull out all of their persuasive powers to get Sheffield United striker Bruce Dyer to join the club last week, with other clubs understood to be also interested in signing him. Penney said: "It took quite a bit of work to convince him his future was at Rovers, but with the new stadium and new players he was suitably impressed to sign on for next season's challenge. Bruce is a quality striker who has played at the top level. He has hit the net regularly and will add to the arsenal of strikers we have here."

Rovers' Director of Football, Mickey Walker, commented: "Bruce is just about the final piece in the jigsaw. We targeted several players this summer and we have got them all in very quickly. "I am extremely confident that this squad is now equipped to win promotion to the Championship. That's what everyone – the chairman, the board, Dave and myself will be aiming for."

June 5, 2006
Pontins Final programmes on sale

Rovers have announced that they have a further stock of programmes for the Pontins Holidays play-off final against Carlisle in stock, with a reprint proving necessary due to the small numbers printed on the day. They are available from the Rovers shop at £1 per copy.

June 5, 2006
Ipswich manager

Ipswich Town are due to name their new manager this morning, with their former captain Jim Magilton set to be named to succeed Joe Royle, who left the club at the end of last season. Rovers boss Dave Penney had been mentioned in several sources as being in the frame for the job, but presuming that indications from East Anglia are accurate, the appointment of Magilton means that Dave will be remaining at Rovers for next season. We hope that this news will end all of the uncertainty which the speculation has caused in certain circles, and we can look forward to a successful promotion campaign next season.

June 4, 2006
Ricky for Rotherham?

Reports in the local press, including the Yorkshire Post, suggest that Rovers midfielder Ricky Ravenhill may be about to join League One club Rotherham United. Ravenhill was transfer listed at the end of last season, and is reported to be considering an offer to join the Millers as manager Alan Knill attempts to inject some new life into his side after a number of players rejected new contract offers.
Ravenhill is also understood to be interesting Lincoln City, but the recent departure of Keith Alexander may quell their interest.

June 4, 2006
Ryan - we don't think he'll go

Rovers chairman John Ryan has attempted to dampen down the speculation surrounding the future of Dave Penney, who has been reported to be a target for managerless Ipswich Town. Ryan confirmed that no approach had been made from Ipswich, but did comment that if an approach from a "bigger club" than Rovers were to be made, Rovers would not stand in his way. Ryan said: "Dave knows we will never stand in his way after what he has done for this club as a player and then as a manager and coach. He has two years remaining on his contract and if Ipswich Town or any other clubs have real intentions on our manager then they will have to look at a serious compensation package. But as a club, we have heard nothing and Dave hasn't said anything."
Ipswich have stated that they do not expect the managerial vacancy to be filled next week, although they are hopeful of a resolution the week after, as a number of those on the short list will then have returned from holiday.

June 4, 2006
Mulligan ready for Brazil

David Mulligan is expected to be named in the starting line-up for New Zealand's rather daunting match against Brazil this evening. The match, which will be played in Geneva, is scheduled to kick-off at 5pm, and sees the All-Whites, ranked 118th in the world, up against the World Cup favourites. The match, Brazil's final warm-up match before the competition starts in just under a week's time, comes after an 8-0 victory over FC Lucerne on Tuesday, with some criticism being made at the quality of Brazil's opponents in their preparation for the competition. However, manager Alberto Parreira said: 'I worry only about our team. We need to be able to adjust the things that need to be adjusted independently from our adversary.'
The match will be Mulligan's second for his country since his transfer to Scunthorpe United was confirmed last week.

June 4, 2006

Newell misses out on Derby job

Derby County, who yesterday unveiled Billy Davies as their new manager, have denied that former Rovers striker Mike Newell was offered the job. Newell had previously told the "Luton News" paper: "If I wanted to be Derby manager, I would have been Derby manager by now." However, the Rams' managing director said: "We have, with the full knowledge of Luton, conducted interviews with Mike, as we have with other candidates. No offer was made and none declined. At the time, we were in no position to offer him the manager's role when the process was only part way through."

June 3, 2006
Rovers Open Day

June 2, 2006
Sheridan in as Ronnie leaves

In a surprise move yesterday, Oldham boss Ronnie Moore was sacked, with former Rovers midfielder John Sheridan being installed as his successor a few hours later. Sheridan had an eleven week taster for the job back in 2004, when he was caretaker manager between Iain Dowie leaving and Brian Talbot (who Moore replaced) arriving.
Oldham's managing director, Simon Corney, stated that Moore's departure was for "financial reasons" - it seems that season ticket sales were poor as a result of Moore's unpopularity with the fans.
Sheridan made eight appearances for Rovers back in the 1998/99 season, when boss Ian Snodin brought in a number of big names as he attempted to stabilise Rovers after their relegation from the Football League.
Moore's assistant manager at Oldham, former Rovers defender John Breckin, also left the Latics yesterday.

June 2, 2006
Timlin wins new deal with Cottagers

June 2, 2006
Swans failure costs the Gulls

Adebayo Akinfenwa's missed spot kick in the penalty shoot-out at the end of the League One play-off final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff last weekend has cost his former club, Torquay, £25,000. The payment would have been due if Swansea had been promoted, which was part of the deal agreed as part of Akinfenwa's transfer between the two clubs twelve months ago.

June 1, 2006
Dyer for Rovers

Doncaster Rovers have signed Sheffield United striker Bruce Dyer this afternoon, who becomes the fifth signing of the summer. The 31-year old striker has scored 115 goals in his 326 League starts during his career, which comprises Watford, Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Stoke City, Millwall and Sheffield United.
Bruce only joined Sheffield United from Stoke in January, and by Mickey Walker's comments today, it appears that Rovers tried to sign him then.

June 1, 2006
Mulligan becomes an Iron man

Doncaster Rovers defender Dave Mulligan has agreed to join neighbours Scunthorpe United after failing to agree a new contract at Rovers. Mulligan had been offered a new deal, but the delay in signing the contract, allied to his desire for improvements to the terms, led Rovers to withdraw the original deal.
Mulligan has signed a two-year deal with Scunthorpe, with boss Brian Laws saying: "He is very versatile, he can play right back, left back, left wing, right wing and centre midfield. That will be a great strength to this football club. He is two footed, has great delivery from set pieces, and can get a goal as well. There were a number of clubs trying to sign him and we had quite a bit of opposition to secure his services. The deal was made more difficult as he is away on international duty in Germany."

June 1, 2006
Dave plays as All-Whites draw

Whilst his transfer to Scunthorpe was being announced in England, Rovers defender Dave Mulligan was away on international duty playing for New Zealand. He played 82 minutes of their 1-1 draw against Estonia in Tallinn yesterday evening, with captain Danny Hay scoring the New Zealand goal. The result comes on top of a 3-1 victory over Georgia at the weekend, and leaves coach Riki Herbert very pleased with the form of his side: "These are two massive results for us. If we'd come over here and drawn one match, we'd have been really happy. But we've over delivered and really grasped some creditability in the hotbed of Europe. We've made six changes tonight so the players deserve all the accolades they get because they're performing on and off the pitch. I mean we're playing teams ranked well above us and performing, controlling the game and scoring goals; there's a real belief, some real confidence now. It's given us a lot of confidence around the quantity of players we have as well as the quality."
New Zealand: Ross Nicholson, Kris Bouckenoghe, Che Bunce, Danny Hay (captain), Michael Wilson, Ivan Vicelich, Jarrod Smith (Jeremy Brockie 46), Raf De Gregorio (Jeremy Christie 65), David Mulligan (Andrew Barron 82), Adrian Webster (Leo Bertos 46), Chris Killen (Vaughan Coveny 82).

June 1, 2006
Ryan - no approach - and Rovers bigger than Ipswich!

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan yesterday said that Ipswich Town have not made an approach for Rovers manager Dave Penney. Speculation has been mounting in the local press in East Anglia about Penney joining the short list of candidates for the vacancy at Portman Road following the departure of Joe Royle at the end of last season.
Ryan told Radio Sheffield:"There hasn't been an approach but there's been a lot of speculation about Dave's future but I'm confident he'll stay. He can see the progress we're making, he's got a great squad and I've given him enormous backing. And although this may sound ridiculous to some people, we are potentially a bigger club than Ipswich Town."

See the new visitor centre

With just over six months to go until the new community stadium opens, Doncaster Council have today announced that the visitor centre is officially open. Fans will be able to view progress on the site, and also to look at a virtual reality model of the stadium. Plans marking the key phases of the development will also be on view, along with various artist's impressions.
Doncaster Mayor, Martin Winter, said: 'The display area that looks over the construction site is an excellent place to safely view the progress of this high tech stadium. It is surprising how quickly the work is taking shape so I would strongly recommend that our sporting enthusiasts take a look at just how impressive the new sports complex is going to be.'
