Mark Hickling

There will be a one minute's silence before the kick-off of tomorrow's home game against Rotherham United, as a mark of respect for Mark Hickling, who died last week after being taken ill at the Colchester game.
Mark's family have asked for no floral tributes, and instead fans are invited to donate to Mark's preferred charity, the British Heart Foundation. Accordingly, the VSC's usual "Coin Trail" collection will not take place tomorrow, but a collection will be made by the British Heart Foundation.
There will be a Bingo Quiz Night in the Rovers Return this evening starting at 7.30pm, with teams of four taking part. If you can make it, it's sure to be a good evening out and for a most worthwhile cause. A raffle will also be made during the evening, with all proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation.

Goals check

Four out of the scheduled six matches in the UniBond Premier League may have been postponed due to bad weather on Tuesday evening, but of the two that did take place, a number of former Rovers players were featuring.
In the remaining two games, former Rovers keeper Andy Woods had a bad evening, letting in six goals as Wakefield-Emley went down 6-1 at Farsley Celtic. Former Rovers player Andy Watson scored Farsley Celtic's fifth goal - the victory moves his side to only a point behind leaders Frickley Athletic, although they have played more games than their title rivals.
Meanwhile, the evergreen Andy Hayward equalised for Ossett Town in their game against play-off hopefuls Burscough. However, three goals conceded in the last twenty minutes saw his side go down to a 4-1 defeat.

Penney to give fringe players their chance

Despite an upturn in the Rovers' form of late, Dave Penney has confirmed that he is planning to give a number of "fringe" players a chance to stake their claim for being retained next season. Penney has conceded that the chances of reaching the play-offs are all but over, and wants to check out some of the players who have not featured on a regular basis so he can plan ahead for next season.
Penney said: "We want to finish as high up the table as we can and we also need to take a close look at players with next season in mind. It looks highly unlikely now that we'll make the play-offs but that doesn't mean there is nothing left to play for and there will be chances for players to come in and stake their claim."

March 30, 2006
Rufus extends loan

Former Doncaster Rovers defender Rufus Brevett, now on the books at Plymouth Argyle, has had his loan at Leicester City extended until the end of the season. Brevett, now 36, joined the club on an initial one month loan in February.
Leicester manager Rob Kelly, said: "I see him having a part to play not just for 90 minutes on a Saturday. It's throughout the week as well. He's entered into the way we train and prepare for games which is important. He's a good to have around the place, he's a good professional."
Brevett played over a hundred first team games for Doncaster Rovers between 1987 and 1991.

Timlin raring to go

Despite not featuring in the Rovers squad on Saturday, Fulham midfielder Michael Timlin, who signed for Rovers on loan until the end of the season with only minutes to go from last Thursday's loan deadline, is looking forward to being involved for the rest of the season.
He commented: "The chance to come to Doncaster and play eight games compared to one (at Fulham) was too important to turn down. I found out about the move at about 2pm on Thursday, so I rushed in to get it sorted and signed five or 10 minutes before the deadline."

March 30, 2006
Rovers in talks with three

Dave Penney confirmed yesterday that Rovers are in negotiations with the agents of Kevin Horlock, Sean McDaid and Dave Mulligan about extending their stay at the club for next season. Talks are still taking place, and Penney is hopeful that agreement will be reached with the playres during the next week.

March 29, 2006
Heffernan targets return

Rovers striker Paul Heffernan had an operation on a troublesome groin injury on Monday after missing several matches recently. Although he made a playing return against Huddersfield Town recently, he suffered a reaction, and surgery proved to be the only option. Heffernan will take around twelve weeks to recover from the operation, but it does mean that he should be able to report for pre-season training fully recovered.
Rovers physio Baz Windle commented: "Heff has long history of problems with his abductors dating back to his times at Notts County and Bristol City. The problem that he had was on his right-hand side but there was also a lot of scar tissue on his left-hand side. It wasn't bothering him but it was restricting his full range of movement and wasn't as flexible as it should have been. The injury that has kept Heff out in recent weeks would probably have cleared up without surgery but there was no guarantee that he wouldn't have broken down again.

March 29, 2006
Reserves 3 Hartlepool 1

Doncaster Rovers maintained their place at the top of the reserve league table last night after recording a convincing 3-1 victory over Hartlepool United. The Rovers goals were scored by Ross McCormack, Paul Green and Ricky Ravenhill.

March 29, 2006
Sarge extends stay

Struggling League Two club Chester City have been strengthened by the news that Rovers defender Mark Albrighton has been allowed to stay at the club for the rest of the season. The news comes ahead of this evening's "must win" match against Boston United, although Rovers have inserted 24-hour recall clause into the loan renewal. Albrighton joined Chester at the end of February and has since started five games for the club.
Chester have, however, been dealt a blow with the news that Paul Ellender, on loan from Boston United, has been recalled by the Lincolnshire club, and he is set to play against them this evening.
Former Rovers striker Gregg Blundell is expected to return to their side for today's game after missing Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Wrexham with an ankle injury.

March 29, 2006
Miller moves on

Last week we reported that former Rovers defender Barry Miller had left Nationwide North club Worksop Town by mutual consent. It has now been announced that Miller has signed for UniBond Premier League club Ilkeston Town, who are currently lying in 15th place.
Barry played over seventy games for Rovers between 2000 and 2003, and has since also played for Gainsborough Trinity, Hucknall Town and Leigh RMI.

March 29, 2006
Scott extends Celtic stay

Former Doncaster Rovers defender Scott Maxfield has signed a twelve month extension to his contract at Stalybridge Celtic, which means that he will now stay at the club until the end of next season. Celtic boss John Reed was delighted with the news, having tried to sign Scott on a number of occasions when he was at Barrow. Reed said: "I’ve chased him for eight years and thought I’d got him twice before Lee Turnbull got sacked at Barrow and joined Liam Watson at Southport. We beat off other clubs to get him and the extension is great news for everybody at the club."

Rovers Return open Saturday

Despite the early kick off, the Rovers Return will be open prior to Saturday's match against Rotherham. Due to licensing restrictions, it will be open from 11.00 am.

Voting results

In only his second match back in the side, Sean Thornton swept to a convincing victory in the "Man of the Match" voting for his performance in Saturday's match at Brentford, winning well over half of all votes cast. With eight Rovers players receiving nominations, the leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Sean Thornton (58.33%)
2 Steve Roberts (15.28%)
3 Neil Roberts (12.5%)
Thank you to everyone who took part. The next vote will open following the end of Saturday's home game against Rotherham United.

March 28, 2006
Price goes in for op

Rovers midfielder Jason Price is due to go in to hospital today to have an operation on a hernia problem which has troubled him for the last five or six matches. This will mean that he will miss the remainder of the season, but will be fully fit when he reports back for pre-season training for next season. However, Price did promise that "I'll be back for a promotion push next term".
He continued: "I don't want to count my chickens but we should be in the top three next season. I need this operation now because I want everything to be right for next season."
Meanwhile, Dave Penney is hoping to hear from midfielder Kevin Horlock whether he will accept the two-year deal that is on offer. "He needs to tell us yes or no this week" said Penney.

March 28, 2006
Griffiths makes Oxford debut

Rovers' young midfielder Anthony Griffiths made his Oxford United debut yesterday afternoon when he took part in their reserve team game against Colchester United. Of Griffiths' performance, the Oxford web site commented: "New loan signing Anthony Griffiths certainly made his mark on the game, picking up a booking and making several stern challenges: easy to see why former United favourite Micky Lewis, now Griffiths' coach at Doncaster, likes the look of him!"
The match ended as a goalless draw.

March 28, 2006
Rotherham 1 Youth team 1

The Rovers' youth team picked up a commendable 1-1 draw against Rotherham United on Saturday, coming back from a goal behind against the league leaders thanks to a Craig Nelthorpe penalty towards the end of the first half.

March 27, 2006
Sarge to Posh?

With only one defeat in the last ten games, understandably Dave Penney was very happy with Saturday's away win at Brentford. Sean Thornton scored Rovers' winner, with Penney commenting: "We had two off the woodwork and another cleared off the line but if you'd asked me if I'd have taken a 1-0 win before the game, I'd have bitten your hand off."
We knew it was going to be a difficult place to come, but I thought that our keeper and two centre halves were magnificent and kept everything out. We had a couple of other chances, with Thornton hitting the bar and Robbo having a shot cleared off the line, which would have made it easier for us."
The win means Rovers are in ninth place, eight points behind the play-offs with seven games to go. Will they be able to make up the points in time? Only time will tell!

March 27, 2006
McSporran returns

Rovers winger Jermaine McSporran has returned to the club at the end of his one-month loan spell at Boston United. Jocky went to Boston to regain some match fitness after a long absence following his knee injury. Thehe loan spell seems to have been ended as Boston were unable to extend the loan following the withdrawal of funding by one of their main sponsors following undue criticism from a couple of alleged supporters, with also prevented Steve Evans from making two other loan signings on loan deadline day.
However, in a further development, an interview with Dave Penney on Radio Sheffield at the end of last week suggests that McSporran has been told that he has no future at Doncaster Rovers, and will be allowed to find a new club. This has not, however, been officially reported yet by the club.

March 27, 2006
Mulligan looks forward to internationals

Rovers defender Dave Mulligan has keeping his fingers crossed that he will have the chance to play in two internationals against Chile at the end of April. New Zealand are to play two games against the South American side on 25th and 27th April - the first time the two countries have met since 1995.
Mulligan commented on the games: "Everyone is talking about the Brazil game in Geneva on June 4 and that's going to be something special. But these Chile games are only a few weeks away and I'm looking forward to playing in them already; it's an exciting prospect. It's great that we are finally getting games scheduled on a regular basis because that's the only way we're going to make progress as a team."
The matches take place during the midweek between the away game at Southend and the last home game of the season against Oldham Athletic.

March 25, 2006
Brentford 0 Rovers 1

Never give up on this season until the maths says it's impossible. A couple of games ago, most fans and the club management had virtually conceded the chances of reaching the play-offs, yet after today's matches, Rovers have edged a little closer to sixth place, being now only eight points adrift with seven matches go go. It will still need a great set of results from Rovers, accompanied by a serious drop in form by some of the top seven clubs, to keep the dream alive, but it is still possible.
A superb result a Brentford, who started the day in second place in the league table, but Rovers retained the tactic of playing the high pressure, ball on the ground with quick passing style of play which they had rediscovered against Colchester. Rovers named an unchanged side, and the benefit were there for all to see. The only goal of the game came a minute short of the hour, with Neil Roberts setting up Sean Thornton to score. Despite a triple substitution by the home side, Rovers continued to retain their domination of the match. Late on, Jason Price could have put the match beyond doubt, but fired fractionally high and wide.
The "Man of the Match" voting has now closed. Thank you to everyone who has taken part. The result will be announced on Tuesday morning.

March 26, 2006
Goals check

Our look at former Rovers players scoring goals this week begins in League One, where Jonathan Forte helped Rotherham United celebate their late reprieve by scoring two of their three goals as they beat Bristol City 3-1 at Millmoor. In League Two, JJ Melligan opened the scorign for Cheltenham Town as the sank seemingly doomed Rushden & Diamonds 3-1 - relegation to the Conference seems to be two of Torquay United, Rushden & Diamonds and Chester City.
Dropping down into the non-league scene, Robert Pell scored one of Frickley's two goals as they defeated Leek Town - a result that puts them top of the UniBond Premier League.
In the UniBond First Division, Steve Brodie scored a vital winner as Droylsden defeated Harrogate Town, which keeps his side nicly tucked in behind the leading trio Stafford Rangers, Northwich Victoria and Nuneaton Borough.
Finally, in Scotland Colin Cramb scored from the penatly spot for Stenhousemuir as they strolled to a 5-1 victory over Montrose, which maintained his club's four point lead at the top of Scottish Division Three.

March 25, 2006
Brentford v Rovers team news

This afternoon, Doncaster Rovers face Brentford for the second time in four weeks in a game they need to win to keep any faint glimmer of hope of reaching the play-offs alive. Brentford have since climbed into second place in the League One table, with Rovers 10 points adrift of sixth place with only eight games to go. Not impossible, but Rovers have to win virtually all their remaining games and hope that those above them suffer a lapse in form.
Rovers continue to suffer from injury problems, although most relate to players that have been missing for some time: Andy Warrington, Barry Richardson and Nick Fenton (broken legs), along with Richard Offiong (hamstring) and Paul Heffernan (groin).
Paul Green and David Wheater missed Tuesday's game against Colchester United with foot injuries, but are expected to be fit for selection today. However, we do not expect many changes for today's game after Tuesday's much improved performance.
Winger Michael Timlin, who joined the club on loan from Fulham minutes before the loan deadline expired on Thursday, will be drafted into the squad and may feature in place of Jason Price, who has been suffering with a hernia problem recently, and may enter hospital for an operation next week. If he plays, Timlin is set to feature on the left wing, with James Coppinger reverting to his more familiar right-wing position.
Brentford boss Martin Allen is set to make changes to his side after they lost to relegation candidates Gillingham during the week. Midfielder Eddie Hutchinson is likely to be fit after recovering from a knock, but defender Kevin O'Connor (ankle) and Oli Sjulason will miss out today.

March 25, 2006
Loan deadline signing

Doncaster Rovers have signed Fulham's 21-year old midfielder Michael Timlin on loan until the end of the season, with the move being finalised only minutes before the loan deadline on Thursday. Timlin started his career as a left winger before moving to play in central midfield, but Rovers are likely to use him in the left-wing position, with James Coppinger going back onto the right to take over from Jason Price, who needs an operation on a hernia.
Michael missed most of the 2003/04 season with a back injury followed by a broken metatarsal bone in his foot, and recently spent a month on loan at Scunthorpe United, but only made one substitute appearance for them.

March 25, 2006
Darlington 2 Reserves 1

Doncaster Rovers featured a trialist from West Auckland in their side at Darlington during the week, and also named Phil McGuire for his first match since recovering from his knee injury. They conceded a penalty just after the half hour mark, but Alun Armstrong scored his first goal in Rovers colours when equalising in the 54th minute. The winning goal came on controversial circumstances in the 72nd minute when Reay scored, despite being what Mickey Walker described as being at least ten yards offside.
Rovers: Tonny Nielsen, Simon Marples, Rob Pacey, Phil McGuire, Gerard Alonso, Adam Brown, Ricky Ravenhill, Liam Green, Craig Nelthorpe, Alun Armstrong, Matty Moffatt
Substiutes: Adam Green (for Pacey, 46), James McGarry (for Moffatt, 46), Andy Matthews (for Alonso, 60)

March 24, 2006
Penney challenges Thornton

Rovers manager Dave Penney has challenged midfielder Sean Thornton to be much more consistent after impressing in his first appearance in the first team for two months. Penney said of Rovers' record signing: "Sean was excellent like everyone else. I don't know if he thought he had a point to prove but if he played like that week in week out he would be in the starting line up more often."

March 24, 2006
Copps wins vote

James Coppinger cruised to a clear victory in the latest "Man of the Match" voting, which was for Tuesday's home game against Colchester United. The returning Sean Thornton came in a clear second - between the two of them they took over 70% of all votes cast.
With ten Rovers players receiving votes, the leading votes were cast as follows:
1 James Coppinger (44.30%)
2 Sean Thornton (26.58%)
3 Steve Roberts (8.86%)
4 Sean McDaid (6.33%)
Thank you to everyone who took the time and trouble to vote. The next vote will open tomorrow evening, following the away game at Brentford.

March 24, 2006
Mark Hickling

We would like to express our sympathy and condolences to the family of young Rovers supporter Mark Hickling who died on Wednesday evening. Mark was taken ill with a heart problem on the Town End terrace at Tuesday evening's game against Colchester United, and needed the help of the paramedics at the ground. He was revived in the ambulance before taken to the hospital, but despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Mark subsequently died.

March 24, 2006
Rotherham game all-ticket

Next Saturday's home game against Rotherham United, which kicks off at noon, is all-ticket, and no tickets will be on sale on the day of the game.
Tickets are now on general sale from the ticket office, with terracing tickets also on sale from the club shop in Priory Walk.
Ticket prices for the match are as follows:
Seating: Adults £18.00, Concessions £12.00
Terracing: Adults £15.00, Concesssions £8.00

March 23, 2006
Penney: play-offs out of reach

Rovers manager Dave Penney has virtually conceded that there is little chance of Rovers reaching the League One play-offs this season after a "magnificent" performance against Colchester on Tuesday. He has now challenged his side to beat last season's final finishing position of tenth - and if they continue to play as well as they did on Tuesday evening, that is highly possible.
Of Tuesday's performance, Dave commented: "I thought we were magnificent - that was much more like us. It was an excellent game and I couldn't have asked for more apart from a few goals. We made changes to the side and brought in some fresh legs and the players responded with a tremendous display of hard work and endeavour."

March 23, 2006
Coin Trail nears £50,000!!

With £355.50 from Donny Dog's half-marathon sponsorship money being added to the £144.03 collected in the Viking Bar on Tuesday, and £161.75 collected inside the ground, the Viking Supporters' Co-operative "Coin Trail" edges ever closer to the magic £50,000 figure. The new running total for the Coin Trail now stands at £48,596.43.

Belle Vue to host final

Belle Vue is to play host to the final of the Sheffield and Hallamshire Association Cup, which will be played on Wednesday, 10th May. The final will be contested between Kiveton Park and Sheffield Lane Top.

March 21, 2006
Rovers 0 Colchester United 0

Five changes were made by Dave Penney for this evening's home game against Colchester United following Saturday's poor display against Nottingham Forest. Most notable of all, Sean Thornton was restored to the Rovers midfield, and the Rovers attack was changed, with Neil Roberts and Lewis Guy replacing Leo Fortune-West and Ross McCormack Alan Blayney replaced Jan Budtz in goal, and Dave Mulligan was reinstated at right back with centre back David Wheater being perhaps unfortunte to make way.
The changes certainly worked, with Rovers putting in a great display of attacking football - the only pity being that they couldn't convert their possessional superiority into goals. They did hit the woodwork twice with the goalkeeper well beaten - James Coppinger and Neil Roberts being very unlucky to see their shots come back off the woodwork, when they could easily have gone in. After the "doom and gloom" of Saturday, the performance of today suggests that Rovers could put together a good run until the end of the season, even though it is probably too late to make up the lost ground. The wonder is - what might have been possible if they could have played like this for the last couple of months?
The "Man of the Match" voting has now closed. Thank you to everyone who has taken part - we'll let you know the answer on Friday morning.

March 22, 2006
Griffiths loan move

Rovers midfielder Anthony Griffith has gone on loan to League Two club Oxford United until the end of this season, so that he can gain some experience at first team level. Griffith has come up through the youth team to make appearances in the reserves, and made his first team debut for Rovers at Swindon Town in February.
Rovers boss Dave Penney commented: "This will get him valuable experience to allow him to progress, which will be better than youth and reserve football. It will allows us to see him play at a higher level than he is used to on a more regular basis. This is part of his education as he looks to push for a first team place next season at Rovers".

March 22, 2006
Rovers interest in McLeod?

The BBC have reported that Doncaster Rovers are amongst a number of clubs to have expressed an interest in Swansea City midfielder Kevin McLeod. McLeod has fallen out of favour at the Liberty Stadium after a breach of club discipline, and the Swans' manager Kenny Jackett has urged the player to leave the club before Thursday's loan deadline, despite having two years left on McLeod's contract.
Jackett said: "I've spoken to Kevin and his agent and said from my point of view the best thing is if he goes now."
Swansea will only agree a loan deal if a summer free transfer is guaranteed, with Sheffield Wednesday, Colchester, Doncaster, Peterborough and Chester all reported to be interested in the situation.

March 22, 2006
Vikings buy more shares in Rovers

The Viking Supporters' Co-operative presented a cheque for £10,000 at half time of Saturday's home game against Nottingham Forest, which increases their already substantial shareholding within Doncaster Rovers. These funds will be boosted by more proceeds flowing in to the Coin Trail over the weekend as a result of Donny Dog's great performance in the Doncaster Half Marathon. If you have not paid over your sponsorship money yet, you can do so this evening - Donny Dog's handler, Andy Liney, will be in the Viking Bar before this evening's match.

March 22, 2006
Cramb gets two in goal rout

It wasn't just Liverpool that scored seven goals last night. Stenhousemuir scored a 7-0 away win at bottom club East Stirling in the Scottish Third Division last night to move four points clear at the top of the table. Cramb volleyed his first, the third goal of the game, on the stroke of half time, and added his second in the 70th minute. The brace now makes Cramb the divisional top scorer so far, with 15 to his name.

March 21, 2006
Man of the match

In a remarkably even contest, we had two players who eventually tied with the most votes for the "Man of the Match" for Saturday's home game against Nottingham Forest. With almost all players appearing receiving at least one vote, it perhaps summed up the game when Dave Mulligan, who was only on the pitch for the last eleven minutes of the game, finished in the top four. The leading votes were cast as follows:
1 Sean McDaid, Graeme Lee (22.54% each)
3 James Coppinger (12.68%)
4 Dave Mulligan (11.27%)
Thank you to everyone who voted. The next poll will open following this evening's home game against Colchester United.

March 21, 2006
Rovers v Colchester team news

We expect a number of changes to the Doncaster Rovers side for this evening's home game against promotion-chasing Colchester United, following Saturday's hugely disappointing performance against Nottingham Forest.
The news that Jason Price will shortly have an operation on a hernia perhaps explains his performance on Saturday, but also presumably rules him out of the rest of the season. Striker Paul Heffernan will also miss the rest of the season after Rovers revealed yesterday that he will have an operation on his groin injury, which has kept him out of action since the end of January.
There may well be other changes to the side tonight, with midfielder Sean Thornton set for a recall to the squad after several weeks absence - we also expect Rovers to revert to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation, with either Simon Marples or Dave Mulligan restored to the right back position, with Stephen Roberts, David Wheater and skipper Graeme Lee to contest the two central defensive positions.
Colchester arrive at Belle Vue after suffering a slump in form following their FA Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea, although they did pick up their first win since then on Saturday, when they beat relegation-threatened Swindon Town.
Little team news is being revealed by the Layer Road management, but it seems that Richard Garcia and Stephen Hunt will not play due to knee and ankle injuries respectively.

March 21, 2006
New stadium seating plan

Whilst the final seating plan for the new Community Stadium cannot be finalised until the seating contractor issues details later in the year, some provisional seating plans for the stadium are now available on the Viking Supporters' Co-operative's website. The plans, which give an idea of the layout within the ground, are of the second floor of the stand, which will contain the restaurant and hospitality suites. Check out the details by visiting www.vikingsc.co.uk - or click on their logo to the left.

March 21, 2006
Tim joins the Posh

Tim Ryan, who was released by Doncaster Rovers during January, has signed for League Two club Peterborough United in a deal that lasts until the end of the season. Ryan left Rovers along with skipper Steve Foster "by mutual agreement" earlier in the year, with Foster joining Scunthorpe United within days of his release from Rovers.
Tim has been training with Peterborough for a number of weeks to regain fitness after being out of action for much of this season with a troublesome achilles tendon injury.
Posh manager Steve Beasdale commented: 'Tim is a player who I know well. He is a winner, he has a great left-foot and can play at either left-back or at centre half. A few teams were after him, but we have done a short term deal and it is a good signing. He is very experienced and that is one of the reasons why I have brought him in because we are at the business end of the season now. He has boosted the squad and hopefully he won't be the last of the signings before the deadline."

The home reserve team game againt York City, which was postponed recently owing to a waterlogged pitch, will now be played on Thursday, 20th April, with a 2pm kick-off.

Never give up

In his post-match interview on Saturday, Rovers' assistant manager Mickey Walker refused to give up the chance of reaching the play-offs, despite Rovers now being eleven points behind the play-off places with only nine games to go. Saturday's result ended a seven match unbeaten run, and Mickey challenged the side to go on another unbeaten run in the remaining games.
He said: "We weren't far off pinching a point at the finish but we weren't at our best and it's important we set off on another run now. I'm an eternal optimist and I still wouldn't rule us out of the promotion play-offs while we still have a mathematical chance."

Donny Dog achieves his personal best in half-marathon

Congratulations to Donny Dog, who achieved a personal best time of 2 hours 38 minutes in the Doncaster Half Marathon on Sunday (19 March). What's more, running for the third time in as many years, he didn't come last, indeed leading the stragglers by more than 20 minutes! All this despite an enforced pit stop to apply plasters and change shoes due to blisters.
Donny Dog's efforts have raised £678 for the Youth Team. We are grateful to everyone who pledged their support. Could those who did not pay in advance please see Andy Liney at their convenience (in the Viking Supporters' Bar or on the away bus)? Andy will have the sponsorship sheets with him at these times. Alternatively, you can leave money at the club office marked for Andy's attention, or send a cheque for the requisite amount payable to the Viking Supporters' Co-operative to Andy at P.O. Box 21, Retford, DN22 8JY.

Rovers not to be drawn on Macca fee

Rovers manager Dave Penney refused to confirm that a transfer fee has been agreed with Derby County for the transfer of winger Michael McIndoe at the end of the season. Previous reports suggested that Rovers are asking for a £250,000 fee, but Rovers are hoping that the player will do well, enabling them to demand a higher fee.
Penney said: "If Michael doesn't do well at Derby, he will come back and play for Doncaster. If he does well at Derby, a number of other Championship clubs and possibly Premiership clubs may be interested. We are not going to put a price-tag on his head at the moment, because much will depend on how well he does and who may or may not come in for him. We will see what happens at the end of the season."

Rovers 1 Nottingham Forest 2

The seven match unbeaten run came to an end this afternoon with a lacklustre Rovers performance that saw them go two goals down - both due to goalkeeping errors - before a late penalty by James Coppinger partially saved the Rovers' blushes. Sadly, Rovers didn't land a telling shot on target in the entire afternoon (the penalty excepted) - and if you don't land shots on target, you'll not win the game!
Rovers made changes in defence - the midfield and strike force were unchanged - with Stephen Roberts being introduced at right back, Sean McDaid restored to the left back position, and Lee and Wheater in the centre. Presumably this change, which saw Simon Marples omitted totally, and Mulligan relegated to the bench, was because Dave Penney wanted some more height in the Rovers defence to counteract the Forest attack - but it didn't work. The first goal came in from the Forest left wing - with Budtz advancing for a looping through ball - realising he couldn't reach it, tried to get back, but the ball was rifled past him in his moment of indecision. A second goal almost followed only a few minutes later as again, the Rovers defence hesitated, presumably because they thought the ball had gone out of play - but this time the shot went wide.
With a good start to the second half imperative, Rovers had exactly the opposite fortune - a low shot in from the left of the penalty area went straight through Jan Budtz's legs, and Rovers were facing a mountain to climb. With very few Rovers players putting in decent performances, it was difficult to see where the goals were going to come from. It took the introduction of the substitutes - notably Dave Mulligan, before Rovers suddenly seemed to get a bit of urgency and directness into their play, with Mulligan getting more crosses into the box in the last ten minutes than Price did in the whole game.
Whilst the play-offs remain mathematcially within reach, this defeat killed off any realistic hopes of it being achieved. What remains is to make sure that Rovers continue to improve their end of season finishing place, so they beat last year's tenth.
The "Man of the Match" voting will remain open until 5pm this afternoon. If you would like to take part, please click on the logo to the left.

Donny Dog in half-marathon today!

Please remember that Donny Dog is running in the Doncaster half-marathon this morning. It starts at Hayfield Lakes at 10 o'clock, and if Donny Dog is to keep up to his speed of last year, he should pass the finishing line within two and a half hours. Why not turn up and give him a cheer (as well as a bit of sponsorship)?

Goals round-up

For the first time, we begin our review of former Rovers players scoring goals this weekend over the water in Ireland. Adam Hughes scored the only goal of the game for Sligo Rovers as they beat Bohemians in the opening day of the Irish football season, with Rovers celebrating their return to the top flight in Irish football after a six year absence.
Also making his debut for Sligo was ex-Rovers (albeit only briefly) left back Keith Foy.
Back in England, we look in League One, where Jonathan Forte scored the opening goal of the game for Rotherham in their match away at Huddersfield Town. Sadly for Millers fans, Huddersfield proceeded to score four goals to lift their promotion hopes, and to dump Rotherham back in the relegation places.
Andy Crosby scored Scunthorpe's winner as they won 2-1 at Chesterfield, which lifts his side level with Rovers. On Friday, Adebayo Akinfenwa scored for Swansea City as his side rediscovered the winning touch as they won 2-1 against fellow-promotion challengers Brentford.
In League Two, Richie Barker scored the only goal of the game as Mansfield recorded a 1-0 home victory over Northamotn.
The Conference National saw Steve Burton scoring for Crawley Town as they won 1-0 over Forest Green as both sides hope to avoid relegation. Tristram Whitman, on loan at Hinckley United, scored their equaliser at Workington in the Conference North.
Also in the Conference North, Ben Sauders scored one of Worksop's goals as they drew 3-3 at home against Leigh RMI.

Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers have no new injury concerns for today's League One match against Nottingham Forest, although they still have five players unavailable due to injury - Andy Warrington, Barry Richardson, Nick Fenton (all broken legs), Paul Heffernan (groin) and Richard Offiong (hamstring). Sean McDaid has recovered from his knee injury, has trained this week and is available for selection.
David Wheater is also fit to play after being forced off at half time of last Saturday's home match against Port Vale. The availability of Steve Roberts and Sean McDaid means that Dave Penney has a decision to make over personnel in the Rovers defence, although we expect Rovers to start with the same eleven that started last week.

March 18, 2006
Forest team news

Nottingham Forest are reporting no additonal injury worries after last weekend's draw against Gillingham. they will again be missing Nicky Southall (shoulder), Paul Evans (hip), David Johnson (back), and keeper Paul Gerrard (knee), but defender Danny Cullip may be hoping for a recall after recovering from a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the Gillingham game. Felix Bastians is doubtful after missing the Gilingham match, and striker Scott Doubie will miss the game with a hip injury - he is flying out to the USA to be treated by a specialist.

Miller released

Former Doncaster Rovers defender Barry Miller has been released by Worksop Town "by mutual consent". At the time of his departure, Miller was leading the "away player of the year" voting, and second in the overall "Player of the Year" awards. Miller was at Rovers between 2000 and 2003.

Please sponsor Donny Dog

Donny Dog is looking for sponsorship as he runs once again in the Doncaster Half Marathon on Sunday, 19 March. All money raised will go to the Rovers' Youth Team.
You can pledge as much or little as you like, either per mile for the 13 mile course, or an amount to complete the race. As an alternative, if it's as hot as last year you could sponsor so much for every pound Donny Dog loses in weight in the heavy costume!
If you would like to help, Donny Dog's handler, Andy Liney, is available on the door in the Viking Supporters' Bar before and after all home matches or on away buses, or he can be contacted by e-mail on andy.liney@virgin.net, or by telephone on 01777 703757. You can also pledge on line by following the links on the Supporters' Co-operative website, www.vikingsc.co.uk.
Donny Dog is hoping to yet again improve on his personal best time, and perhaps break 2 1/2 hours this year. It would be a big incentive for him to know he was also raising a worthwhile amount!

Admission prices are the usual (Category A) levels, being:
Seating: Adults £18.00, Concessions £12.00
Standing: Adults £15.00, Concessions £8.00
Students in full time education must buy a ticket from the ticket office to obtain the concessionary rate, as reductions are not avaialble at the turnstiles.

Their initial allocation of Main Stand and Rossington End tickets have been fully sold out, and they were given a further 250 standing tickets for the Main Stand terrace, although they are expected to sell out by the time their ticket office closes at 7pm this evening. Westley hopes for Macca transfer

Derby County manager Terry Westley is hoping that they can persuade Rovers winger Michael McIndoe to move to Pride Park on a full transfer int he summer. McIndoe is currently on loan at County until the end of the season after handing in a transfer request to Rovers a couple of weeks ago.
Westley said of the situation: "Michael is one of the best players in League One, an attacking left-sided player who can also play on the right. He became available on loan with an opportunity to purchase and now he has the chance to show us what he can do."

March 17, 2006
Mulligan after new contract

Rovers defender David Mulligan is still waiting to see if he will be offered a new contract at the end of the season. The New Zealand international is out of contract in the summer, but talks have yet to begin on extending his stay at the club. Whilst he is disappointed that the club have not been closer to the play-offs, he is still hopeful of staying with the club, saying: "I'd like to stay here and am hoping to get a new contract, but I've not heard anything as yet. I'll have to wait and see how things pan out in the next few weeks but I've really enjoyed being here and am confident we'll be a lot stronger next season."

March 17, 2006
Wheater back

Rovers' on-loan defender David Wheater has returned to Rovers for training after being injured in Saturday's home game against Port Vale. Wheater went back to Middlesbrough for treatment on Monday after being forced off at half time with a wound that required a stitch in it, but he was fit enough to resume training on Thursday. He is expected to be available for tomorrow's home game against Nottingham Forest.

Heffernan - no op needed

Rovers' physio Barrie Windle has confirmed that leading goalscorer Paul Heffernan will not need surgery to resolve an ongoing groin problem, after the striker had the results of a scan. Windle said: "The radiologist said that they didn't see any need at this stage for surgery and feels that conventional physiotherapy should clear up the problem and that is what we will carry on doing. We have been working on both Heff's abductor muscles, stretching and lengthening them as part of a corrective treatment and rehabilitation programme. Hopefully he will respond to the treatment, but we won't sit on the problem. If he doesn't make any improvement in the next couple of weeks or so, then we'll send him for a second opinion from the club's surgeon.
Heffernan, who had missed recent games, returned as a substitute at Huddersfield ten days ago, but complained of soreness the following day, and missed Saturday's home game against Port Vale.

Blunt set for Seadogs return

Former Rovers midfielder Jason Blunt looks about to return to Conference side Scarborough as Neil Redfean plans their escape from relegation. Boro are currently third from bottom of the table at the moment with eleven games to go this season.
Blunt is set to return in Scarborough's next reserve team game, with his experience at Conference level valued by Redfearn. He said: "He has been with Alfreton but he knows this level of football very well and he will be up for the scrap."

McIndoe plays in Scotland Future team

Doncaster Rovers winger Michael McIndoe, currently on loan at Derby County, had an opportunity to put himself "in the shop window" yesterday evening when he played the full ninety minutes of Scotland Future's match against their equivalents from Turkey. McIndoe was the only player from an English club selected to start the game, which was played at Inverness Caledonian Thistle's ground. It wasn't all good for the home supporters though, as Ian Black, one of three Inverness players in the Scotland side, was sent off near the end of the game after retalliating to a late challenge. McIndoe is being credited with providing the cross from which Scotland's second goal was headed home by Lee Miller.
Also apprearing for Scotland as a second half substitute was Everton goalkeeper Iain Turner, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Rovers. Scotland lost the game 3-2.
Scotland (4-4-2) Brown (Turner 46); Corrigan, Virgo (McNamee 67), Berra, Hammell; Naismith (Black 46), Kerr, Robson (Rankin 76), McIndoe; Dargo (Duffy 46), Miller.

Schofield signs for Terriers

The Huddersfield local press has reported that Danny Schofield has signed a new two year deal at Huddersfield Town, which apparently scotches rumours which had been circulating in the town that he was leaving the Terriers in the summer, with Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers allegedly interested in signing him.
