Akinfenwa move to Robins is off
Adebayo Akinfenwa's transfer to Swindon Town has been cancelled after he failed a second medical examination. The results showed that, whilst the player is hopeful of an August return to action, it is likely that he will not be ready until the end of November.
With Akinfenwa only being offered a one year contract by Swindon, boss Paul Sturrock said: "I was excited about Bayo coming in. I worked very very hard to get him to the football club when there were lots of other clubs after him. But after speaking to the medical team, the time frame we felt to get him up and running again would be near the end of November. Bayo was confident it would be sooner than that, but it would have been an awful lot of money eaten up for somebody on a one-year-deal.It's also normal that people who have had his type of injury also pick up other niggling injuries. It would not make financial sense to sign him."
With the former Rovers striker turning down a new one-year contract at Swansea City, this development leaves him without a club - and leaves Swindon searching for a striker to boost their firepower for the coming season.

McCormack stars in Bucharest match
Motherwell manager Mark McGhee praised former Rovers striker Ross McCormack for his performance in this week's pre-season friendly against Champions League qualifiers Dinamo Bucharest in Austria, saying: "Ross McCormack was the best player on the park and remember this was at Champions League standard and he really looked the part last night."
Although Motherwell lost the game 3-1, conceding two goals in the first six minutes, they recovered well and McCormack scored their goal from a superb 20-yard free kick.
Two weeks ago, McGhee denied rumours that suggested that McCormack was about to sign for Hartlepool United, saying: "There is no truth in this at all, I have spoken to Chris Turner who is their director of football and a good friend of mine and Ross's name was never mentioned."

Rovers 1 Manchester City 3
With the photographs grouped around the away dugout as the teams ran out, eager to get a photograph of new City manager Sven Goran Eriksson, the City fans massed in the North Stand were eager to see their team do well for his first match in charge.
As it was, it was Rovers who had the audacity to take the lead, the ball coming across the City goal from the right, with the defenders failing to clear the ball, and Sean McDaid had the simple task of cracking the ball home from five yards out, despite the valiant attempt of the City keeper, Andreas Isaksson. Despite a succession of corners which City failed to use to good effect, Rovers went in at the break a goal in front.
Both sides made some changes at half time, and City equalised just four minutes after the restart with Benardo Corradi firing home past Ben Smith. The visitors took the lead in the 62nd minute as Micah Richards powered through the Rovers defence to score a good goal - then three minutes later, Emile Mpenza scored City's third goal. A succession of substitutions during the second half meant that Rovers ended the game with not a single player that had started the game.
Still, despite the result, it was surely a performance from which Sean O'Driscoll could take a number of positives - Martin Woods showed some useful touches, and in the second half, young striker Wade Fairhurst showed some promise. The midfield partnership of Wellens and Woods looks as though it may be a very successful one, and Paul Green had a good game at right back.
Rovers now do not have a further pre-season game until next Saturday when they travel to York City.
Rovers: Neil Sullivan, Paul Green, Gordon Greer, Adam Lockwood, Gareth Roberts, Lewis Guy, Richie Wellens, Martin Woods, Sean McDaid, James Hayter, Paul Heffernan.
Substitutes: Ben Smith (for Sullivan, 46), Jamie Winters (for Roberts, 46), Sam Hird (for Wellens, 57), Bruce Dyer (for Heffernan, 63), Craig Nelthorpe (for Wellens, 63), Brian Stock (for Guy, 68), Anthony Griffith (for Green, 69), Matt Noble (for Woods, 69), Wade Fairhurst (for Hayter, 69), Andrew Boyce (for Lockwood, 830, Jason Hardy (for Greer, 83)
Manchester City: Andreas Isaksson, Micah Richards, Michael Ball, Nedum Onuoha, Ousmane Dabo, Richard Dunne, Emile Mpenza, Darius Vassell, Georgios Samaras, Ishmael Miller, Steve Ireland.
Substitutes: Joe Hart (for Isaksson, 46), Michael Johnson (for Miller, 46), Dietmar Hamann (for Dabo, 46), Benardo Corradi (for Vassell, 46), Danny Mills (for Richards, 69), Paul Dickov (for Mpenza, 70), Matthew Mills (for Onuoha, 70)

Rovers v City
Rovers face a stern test this afternoon when they face Manchester City, for who Sven Goran Eriksson, the former England manager, will be in charge for the first time.
Rovers have warmed up with two good wins over lower league opposition, but will have to be at their best against a Manchester City side who will be out to impress their new boss.
The match ought to see the return of a number of Rovers players who were missing from the midweek games, although Steve Roberts will definitely miss the game after it was confirmed that he has broken a cheekbone, which will mean that he will miss the beginning of the season.
Jamie Winter, a midfielder who is on trial at Rovers, is expected to be fit after treatment which forced his withdrawal from the Worksop game. Paul Green, who also was substituted on Thursday after taking a knock, is also expected to take part in today's game - as is Richie Wellens, who missed out at Worksop.
Sven Goran Eriksson has said that he will field his "best possible" side for Manchester City's first pre-season game of the summer today, although it is uncertain whether new £9 million signing Rolando Bianchi, the former Italy Under-21 striker, will play, following his transfer from from Reggina during the week.
Eriksson said: "I'm looking forward to it. It's a friendly but it's good to be starting once again. Practice is one thing, but you only really learn about players in games, and I do need to learn about the squad we have here. I've been looking forward to the friendlies we have coming up, and I'll learn from them. I hope there's a good atmosphere and I hope it will be a good game. We know it's still early in pre-season but we are going there with the best possible team and we'll try to play good football."

Crunch day for trialists
Rovers will make a decision on two trialists after their performance in today's game against Manchester City. Sean O'Driscoll has said taht he will make decisions on the future of former Kilmarnock defender Gordon Greer and ex-Leds midfielder Jamie Winter after today's game. Both have played in the two games this week, but the Rovers boss wants to see how they shape up against higher quality opposition before deciding whether to keep them on.

Doncaster Rovers have confirmed that they have placed a substantial bid for Preston North End defender Kelvin Wilson, although they face stiff competition from Nottingham Forest. Both clubs are reported to have had bids accepted by Preston, understood to be in the region of £300,000, which would be a club record for Rovers by a considerable margin. The player has been given permission to talk to open talks with both clubs.
Wilson is a 21-year old central defender who joined Preston from Notts County in March 2006 after making 78 league appearances for County. However, he only started 16 league games with Preston since his move.

Worksop 1 Rovers 4
A second clear victory by Doncaster Rovers was achieved by goals from Jason Hardy, Bruce Dyer (2) and Lewis Guy in last night's pre-season game at Sandy Lane. With a number of Rovers players missing from the game due to knocks, a number of fringe players were given the opportunity to stake their claim for a first team place next season.
Rovers went in front in the 24th minute with a low drive by Jason Hardy, and doubled the lead in the 36th minute as Bruce Dyer prodded the ball home from close range. Rovers went in at half time 3-0 up, with Dyer getting his second goal of the game with a placed header.
After having a goal disallowed for offside, Lewis Guy scored Rovers' fourth by chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.
1st half team: Sullivan, Noble, Greer, Lockwood, G.Roberts, Hardy, Griffith, Winter, C.Nelthorpe, Heffernan, Dyer
2nd half team: Sullivan, Croft, Hird, Boyce, McDaid, L.Nelthorpe, Green, Woods, Fairhurst, Hayter, Guy

Pittman joins Crawley
Jon Paul Pittman, who was on Rovers' books for the latter part of the 2006/07 season, has joined Blue Square Conference club Crawley Town after being released by Rovers at the end of last season.
Pittman said: "I got a call from Crawley's assistant manager, Paul Raynor and said yes immediately. I know him and Steve Evans because I went on trial at Boston United a few years ago from Forest when they were in charge. They have been tracking my career ever since and wanted me to join them at Crawley. I had offers of trials at other clubs but I wanted something more permanent and this was the only concrete one with a contract so it was easy for me. It is good to go to a club where the manager knows what you can do and wants you there."
Pittman joins another former Rovers player - Tyrone Thompson - at the club. Thompson joined earlier in the summer after being released by Halifax Town.

The scoring in the second half again came in teh last five minutes - Retford pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute, but James Hayter restored the two goal lead four minutes later with a shot from just inside the penalty area.

Jason Price has said that he is pleased with how he is progressing, but admits to being frustrated with being out of action for so long. He said: "It is very frustrating not being involved but it is one of those things and I've just got to concentrate on getting myself fit.
