Warrington returns
Rovers goalkeeper Andy Warrington played his first match after recovering from an ankle injury when he featured in last night's reserve team game at Rotherham. Warrington has not played a first team game for 14 months after breaking his leg in the Carling Cup game against Manchester City last September. He then injured his ankle in a pre-season game at Gainsborough Trinity, but he has impressed the new Rovers management team with his application since returning to training last week.

Rotherham 7 Reserves 4
Rovers paid the penalty for fielding an inexperienced defensive line-up for last night's reserve team game, finishing on the losing side despite scoring four times.
The game did mark Andy Warrington's return to action, as well as the return of James Coppinger and Sean McDaid after injury. Rovers went behind after just six minutes, and went further behind in the 20th minute. Two goals in reply from James Coppinger looked to see Rovers go in level at the interval, but an injury time goal by Rotherham saw Rovers go in 3-2 down at the break.
Rotherham restored their two goal cushion in the 52nd minute before McDaid equalised from 25 yards five minutes later. Another goal followed for Rotherham in the 60th minute, with Paul Heffernan reducing the arrears again in the 66th minute. Two late goals by Rotherham saw the home side to an amazing 7-4 victory.
Rovers: Warrington, Noble, Pacey, Hulme, L Green, Griffith, Thornton, Wilson, McDaid, Coppinger, Heffernan
Substitutes: Boyce (for Pacey, 31), Fairhurst (for Noble 46), Bythway (for Coppinger, 79), Richardson

Wilson returns
Doncaster Rovers confirmed that they have signed midfielder Mark Wilson on a two month contract. Wilson has impressed manager Sean O'Driscoll in training, and in his performance in last week's reserve team game, and has been given the opportunity to earn a longer contract. Wilson previously played for Rovers during the 2004/05 season when on loan from Middlesbrough, but he failed to impress then-boss Dave Penney and he returned to Boro. A spell in the United States, playing for FC Dallas, finished in the summer, since when he has been trying to get back into the game in England.

MOTM voting results
Lewis Guy was voted as your "Man of the Match" for his performance in Saturday's away game at Brentford. He came home narrowly ahead of fellow-striker Mark McCammon, who was denied a goal on Saturday in bizarre circumstances after TV replays clearly showed his header going into the goal.
A total of nine Rovers players received nominations, with the players receiving most votes being as follows:
1 Lewis Guy (24.0%)
2 Mark McCammon (20.83%)
3 Adam Lockwood (12.0%)

Steve's men denied in spot kick shoot-out
Former Rovers defender Steve Nicol's side New England Revolution were denied victory in yesterday afternoon's MLS Cup Final, going down 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after 120 minutes saw the match finish level at 1-1. A goalless first ninety minutes was followed by two goals in two minutes - Revolution going in front through Taylor Twellman in the 113th minute, but the equaliser came a minute later from Brian Ching. Whilst unsuccessful in this match, Nicol does have the remarkable record of having reached the semi-finals in every season since taking over at New England Revolution five years ago - reaching the final on three occasions.

Leo's next move
Former Rovers striker Leo Fortune-West moved on loan to Shrewsbury Town last Wednesday, making them his third club of the season. Fortune-West joined Rushden & Diamonds in the summer after being released by Rovers, but then spent just over a month at Torquay United on loan, before cutting short the stay so that he could move to Shrewsbury. Fortune-West has initially signed on loan, but there is an option to extend his stay at Gay Meadow until the end of the season.
Leo was a non-playing substitute in Saturday's FA Cup match against Hereford United.

Brentford 0 Rovers 1

Rovers progressed to the second round of FA Cup today with a 1-0 victory over Brentford. The only goal of the game was scored by Lewis Guy after 32 minutes, which increased Brentford's winless run to fifteen games, with the game ending with the Bees' supporters calling for the dismissal of manager Leroy Rosenior.
Rovers made one change to last week's starting line-up, with Mark McCammon being recalled in place of the injured Graeme Lee.
The draw for the second round of the FA Cup is made following tomorrow afternoon's televised match, which should be at approximately 4.10pm.
The "Man of the Match" voting has now closed. Thank you to everyone who contributed - the result will be announced on Tuesday morning.

The goals round-up
Our review of former Rovers players scoring goals this weekend begins in the FA Cup, where Gregg Blundell scored for Chester City within five minutes of having come on as a substitute for their FA Cup tie at Clevedon Town. He scored City's fourth goal as they eased into the second round by a 4-1 score-line.
Richie Barker scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot as Mansfield edged past fellow League Two club Accrington Stanley at Field Mill. The pride of place goes to former Rovers youth team striker Michael Rankine, who scored two goals as Conference strugglers Rushden & Diamonds produced one of the shocks of the first round by beating League One highflyers Yeovil Town 3-1 at Nene Park.
North of the border, the prolific Richard Offiong scored again for Hamilton as they beat Airdrie United 2-1 at home to draw level with leaders Gretna in the Scottish First Division. It was his sixth goal of the season.
In the Scottish Second Division, ex-Rover Dene Shields had an eventful day for Stirling Albion. He opened the scoring in their 2-1 victory over Morton, but was sent off in the last minute of the game for a second bookable offence.

Steve's men in final
Former Rovers defender Steve Nicol steps out with his New England Revolution side later today in the MLS Cup Final against Houston Dynamo. The match is being played at the Pizza Hut Park, Frisco, Texas, with the match kicking off at 2.30pm Central Time.
New England Revolution make their second successive appearance in the final - with 13 of the 14 players used in last season's final being named in the squad for today's match. The game marks Revolution's third final appearance in Nicol's five years in charge - and they have reached the semi-final stage in every season under his leadership.
Houston are making their first appearance in the final, and whilst New England may be more experienced in MLS Cup Finals, the two clubs have had more or less identical seasons this year, with just two league points separating the clubs - the narrowest margin between two finalists since 2003.

Rovers team news

Today Rovers travel to Brentford in the first round of the FA Cup. Last season's run to the third round was Rovers best for twenty years and will be hopeful of a similar run this season. Definitely unavailable are Alan Blayney, Andy Warrington, Graeme Lee, Kevin Horlock and Bruce Dyer with Jan Budtz, Sean McDaid and Theo Streete all major doubts. With the way that substitutes Thornton, Heffernan and Coppinger improved the team against Leyton Orient last weekend we would expect all three to start today. Adam Lockwood will captain the side in Graeme Lee's absence.

November 11, 2006
Brentford team news

Brentford's team news centres on two players formerly on Rovers' books. Keeper Stuart Nelson is unavailable due to an ankle injury meaning that 19 year old Clark Masters will be in goal. Their other news is that they have signed former Rovers trialist Fola Onibujie on loan from Swindon Town. Onibuje scored for Cambridge against Doncaster last season. He had a trial at Belle Vue and was offered a contract before signing for Barnsley without informing Rovers of his decision. He made just three substitute appearances at Barnsley before free transfers to Peterborough, Cambridge and Swindon.

November 11, 2006

Former Rovers full back and friend of David Beckham, Ryan Kirby is the new manager of Harlow Town. His first game is today against AFC Hornchurch in the Ryman League Division One North. We wish him luck in his new role.

November 10, 2006
Warrington on the way back

The work commitment of Andy Warrington has been noticed by Sean O'Driscoll. Warrington hasn't played a competitive game since the Carling Cup game against Manchester City last season, but O'Driscoll has hinted that he may be given a reserve game in the next two weeks having said that he was impressed with how hard Andy is working in an effort to get fit as soon as possible. With Alan Blayney and Jan Budtz still out, Barry Richardson has been back up to young Ben Smith in recent games.

Barnwell quits Town
Former Doncaster Rovers striker Jamie Barnwell has left Bridlington Town due to " the effect the travelling was having on his family life". Barnwell has impressed the club with his ability, and had formed an effective partnership with Jack Wilkinson.
Barnwell was signed by Rovers on the transfer deadline day of the 1998/99 season, and played in the Endsleigh Final that season. He made seven league starts for the club.
November 8, 2006
Offiong extends stay
Former Rovers striker Richard Offiong has agreed a new deal at Scottish Division One side Hamilton after impressing with his performances so far this season. He has signed an extended contract which keeps him at Hamilton until May 2009.
November 8, 2006
Reserves last night

Rovers Reserves went down 3-2 to Sheffield United last night. A goal from trialist Mark Wilson and an own goal from Chris Robertson. United won the game thanks to a penalty that was harshly given for handball against James Coppinger, who played 70 minutes of the match. Rovers had to play the last 25 minutes without Anthony Griffith who was sent off for two bookable offences. He played the game at centre back and may be used in that position at #Brentford on Saturday as it unlikely that captain Graeme Lee will be fit. There is also still a doubt on the fitness of loanee Theo Streete.

The "last match" ticket package

Rovers have decided, in order to make sure that as many Rovers fans get to see the last match to be played at Belle Vue, the match against Nottingham Forest will be all-ticket, and must be bought as a package with a ticket for the Yeovil game. Both matches will therefore be all-ticket, with no tickets being on sale on the day of the game.

It appears that there are already no seats available for these matches.

Winstanley gets York youth job
Former Rovers youth team manager Eric Winstanley has signed a new deal to stay at Conference National side York City as the Head of Youth Development after initially arriving on a trial basis in September. The Minstermen's youth system has brought on many players into the first team, with is something Winstanley is keen to continue.
"In the past I've always admired the set-up at York. It was a small club who brought young lads through, and there have been some very good players come through the system at York and go on to big things. I want to see young players coming here from the York area, get a chance to get a foot in football, and progress enough to get into the first team and take York higher up the leagues.
Winstanley is perhaps best known as a player at Barnsley, and then returning to joining the coaching team at Oakwell after a four year stay at Chesterfield. He later became technical advisor for the St Kitts and Nevis national team, and coached in Zanzibar before arriving at Rovers in 2004/05.

Two join Rovers board
Doncaster Rovers revealed that Terry Bramall and Dick Watson have joined the board of Doncaster Rovers. The pair were announced to the crowd at yesterday's home game against Leyton Orient, with chairman John Ryan saying: "To be able to attract top quality business people like this on to the Board just shows what strides we have made because they wouldn't have touched us with a barge pole a few years ago. They are great signings for Doncaster Rovers and, as well as strengthening the Board, it will help us secure the future of the club."
Terry Bramall and Dick Watson are major shareholders in the privately owned construction group Keepmoat, with Bramall being included in the "Sunday Times 2006 Rich List" to be estimated to be worth £200 million. Keepmoat began as Bramall & Ogden in the Doncaster area in 1931 by Terry's father, George, who was apparently a Rovers fan. The company grew and now employs 3,000 people and 1,500 subcontractors throughout the country.

Redfearn passes 1,000 milestone
Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Neil Redfearn played his 1,000th senior appearance when he turned out for Bradford Park Avenue in their FA Trophy second qualifying round match against Solihull Borough on Saturday. Whilst the level of football may not be as high as earlier in his career, Redfearn's hunger for the game remains undiminished. In his recent autobiography, he said: "I'll never give up on football. Football will have to give up on me."
"I'm enjoying every minute - I feel good and hopefully I can add a bit of quality here and there. Obviously the standard at this level is lower than anything I experienced in the full-time game, and it's pretty physical, but that's never been a problem for me. My long-term aim is to go back into coaching and management eventually but, until an opportunity comes along, I'm totally committed to helping Avenue climb back after a couple of relegations."
"I grew up in the city, so I suppose that if I could have picked a club at the end of my career then Bradford Park Avenue would have been the perfect choice - and here I am."
Avenue made a special presentation of a salver to Redfearn, marking his achievement, before the kick-off on Saturday. The game witnessed by a crowd of 250 saw Park Avenue progress to the next round.
November 4, 2006
Rovers 0 Leyton Orient 0
A dire game witnessed by 5,447 spectators was seen t Belle Vue this afternoon. A poor referee and poor opposition had an effect on Rovers and they quickly adapted to that level after a decent start to the game. The game saw Ben Smith make his home debut in goal and he along with the bandaged Steve Roberts were probably the only players in the starting eleven that can honestly admit to having played well. The game improved with the use of substitutes Thornton, Heffernan and Coppinger and Sean O'Driscoll must surely start with Heffernan at Brentford next week. Rovers best efforts were a Thornton knee height header that ended up hitting the woodwork after a deflection and a Steve Roberts shot from distance. The game was Rovers fifth 0-0 of the season and sixth draw in nine home league games. If Rovers want to start climbing the table they will have to improve on today's performance and start using more width as Orient were able to read the Rovers tactics very easily and only struggled when Rovers remembered what the wings were for.
The "Man of the match" voting will be open until 7pm on Monday. As usual, please click on the logo to the left if you would like to take part.

Rovers team news

Doncaster Rovers look likely to be without Sean McDaid and Bruce Dyer due to injury for this afternoon's home game against Leyton Orient, with Theo Streete also a doubt after picking up an injury in Tuesday's match. John Filan will also not take part - his loan period expires at the weekend in any case, and has reportedly been recalled by Wigan Athletic as one of their goalkeepers is ill.
However, James Coppinger and James O'Connor have trained this week and are available for selection after missing matches recently. Young goalkeeper Ben Smith, who has impressed when given his chance in the first team, is due to continue in goal today.
Paul Heffernan may get a recall today after scoring twice in Tuesday night's Johnstone's Trophy victory at Hartlepool.

November 4, 2006
Orient team news

Leyton Orient winger Derek Duncan could make his first league start after impressing in the cup in midweek, but Craig Easton has a foot injury and will miss the match. will be missing. The struggling side will also be missing Adam Tann and Echanomi due to injury, and have a doubt over winger Peter Till, who came off injured in the 3-1 midweek defeat at Bristol City. Shane Tudor will probably replace him after recovering from an ankle injury. As with Rovers, the O's are likely to make several changes from the midweek Johnstone's Paint Trophy match during the week, and are likely to play with two wingers this afternoon (Duncan and Tudor).
With Orient struggling to adapt to League One football after being promoted in the summer, they have conceded an average of three goals in each away match so far this season, so their defence may well be under pressure this afternoon!

November 4, 2006

Paul wins the vote
Paul Heffernan, who scored twice within a minute during the second half of Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy game at Hartlepool, was voted as your clear "Man of the Match", winning over half of the votes cast. With a low attendance being reflected in a much lower number of votes than usual, seven players received nominations, with the top two players (after an attempt at a multiple vote being discounted) being voted as:
1 Paul Heffernan (57.14%)
2 Sean Thornton (19.04%)
Thank you to those that took the time to vote. The next voting will open following Saturday's home game against Leyton Orient.

Nicol after job as national team coach
Former Liverpool and Rovers defender Steve Nicol, currently manager at New England Revolution in Boston, has confirmed that he is interested in succeeding Bruce Arena as national team coach of the USA. Nicol has impressed during his time in the United States, but many feel that the opportunity may have come a little too early for him. Reports suggest that Jurgen Klinsmann, who took Germany to the World Cup final this summer, is the favourite for the job.
Nicol said: 'I'd be crazy not to be interested, but I may not get the nod on this occasion. Hopefully my time will come, but I won't be sitting up worrying about it. I'm a real believer in getting on with the job you have - anything that happens in the future is dictated by what you do now."

Doncaster Rovers progressed through to the regional quarter finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last night, thanks to two goals in a minute from Paul Heffernan, and a late goal from Jason Price. Hartlepool scored a consolation goal deep into injury time at the end of the game.
Rovers took the lead on 54 minutes when a neat through ball to Heffernan was rifled past the keeper - the second came within a minute as a defence-splitting pass again found Heffernan, who slotted the ball past the advancing Hartlepool goalkeeper.

Warrington returns!
Goalkeeper Andy Warrington has returned to full training this week after recovering from torn ankle ligaments in a pre-season match at Gainsborough Trinity in the summer. We hope that this will mark the end of a horrific 13 months for Andy who, when injured, had just recovered full fitness after having broken his leg in the Carling Cup game against Manchester City last September.
His return to fitness will help ease the goalkeeping crisis at the club that seems to have been a regular occurrence in the last couple of years - at the moment on-loan keeper John Filan is still being treated for a dead-leg back at Wigan, Jan Budtz has had a precautionary scan on a groin injury, and Alan Blayney continuing to be absent with an elbow injury, which may need an exploratory operation to find out what the continuing problem is. In recent matches this has left young Ben Smith as first choice keeper, with coach Barry Richardson providing cover on the bench.
