Goals
review |
![]() |
Our
review of former Rovers players scoring goals this week starts in League
Two, with Richie Barker scoring for Mansfield Town as they drew 1-1 at
Boston United, which leaves both clubs uncomfortably close to the relegation
zone. Former Rover Neil Roberts scored for Wrexham, but they still went down to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Milton Keynes Dons. Dropping into the Conference, Steve Burton scored from the penalty spot for Tamworth, but they went down 3-1 at Halifax Town. There was only one match in the Conference North yesterday owing to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, but a former Rover scored in that game. Ben Saunders scored for Worksop as they eased their relegation fears by registering a 3-1 home victory over Hyde. The only ex-Rover scoring a goal in the FA Cup yesterday won't want reminding of it. Steve Brodie scored an own goal whilst playing for Stalybridge Celtic at marine yesterday - that goal proved to be the one that put his side out of the competition, despite a late Stalybridge goal a minute from time. The match finisehd 3-2 to Marine. Finally, Neil Redfearn scored the 200th goal of his career yesterday in Bradford Park Avenue's 7-3 victory over Clitheroe in th UniBond League Division One. He is due to reach another notable milestone shortly - yesterday was his 992nd senior appearance. |

Former Rovers skipper Steve Foster had a day he'll want to forget yesterday. He was received a straight red card in the 17th minute for a "violent challenge" on Brighton's Sam Williams. His current side, Scunthorpe, went down to a surprising 2- 1 home defeat. |

Sean
welcomes first win |
![]() |
Rovers
manager Sean O'Driscoll was impressed with the way that his side played
yesterday at Cheltenham, which saw Rovers pick up three points for the
first time since he arrived at the club. "The first half was as good as we've played, and we showed a lot of character in the second," he said. "Everyone knew what they were trying to do and worked extremely hard for each other. But I think we can improve. If we take the first 45 minutes from today and do it for the whole game, we'll be nearly there. |

Injury-hit
Doncaster Rovers travel down to Cheltentham for this afternoon's League
One game, hoping that they can get their first League win since Sean O'Driscoll
took over as manager. O'Driscoll has won once against Cheltenham this
season as Bournemouth won at Dean Court just three weeks before he left
to join Rovers, so let's hope that he is equally successful today. For
all the lack of wins, Rovers have only lost one out of the last six games,
but that sequence sees them start the day in 21st place. Rovers will welcome Bruce Dyer back into the squad after successfully coming through Tuesday's reserve team game against Lincoln City, and will be included in the squad. Alan Blayney is likely to be on the bench today after recovering from his elbow injury, but on-loan keeper John Filan will keep his place. Mark McCammon may also take some part in today's game after resuming full training this week, but a decision on James O'Connor will be made this morning, but has struggled with a neck injury during the week. Definitely missing will be James Coppinger (groin) and Gareth Roberts (knee), who have both had MRI scans this week. There is a slight doubt over striker Paul Heffernan, who fell on his shoulder in training on Thursday. Brian Stock plays the last game of his current loan today, but the Rovers boss is hoping that Preston will agree to another month's extension. |

Mystery
virus KO's Ross |
![]() |
Former
Rovers striker Ross McCormack will miss Motherwell's match against Dunfermline
this afternoon, suffering from a mystery virus which has struck for the
second time this season. Boss Maurice Malpass has confirmed that the club
doctors have no idea when the 20-year old will be fit again, saying: "Ross
is suffering from a viral complaint again, and we have had to send him
back for further tests to see what it is. He will not take any part in
the game against Dunfermline and we will just have to wait and see what
the doctors have to say. It's disappointing for the lad as, even though
we have never pushed him on his fitness, he has never really had the chance
to recover." |

Horlock
out for four months |
![]() |
There
is a fear that Rovers midfielder Kevin Horlock will be out of action for
up to four months after news emerged yesterday that he has had a knee
operation, which is similar to the one that Leo Fortune-West had a couple
of years ago. The injury was discovered during his recent routine cartilage
operation, but after taking advice, Rovers elected to see if the problem
would be resolved if Horlock cut back on training and playing. That option
does not seem to have worked, and an operation was then decided. Rovers hope that Kevin will be back playing before the end of the season. |

More
injury updates |
![]() |
The
injury situation at Rovers appears to be easing slightly with news that
James O'Connor is expected to be fit for tomorrow's away game at Cheltenham,
despite a neck injury recurring in training earlier this week. Bruce Dyer will be avaialble for selection after successfully playing an hour of the reserve team game against Lincoln City. Despite reports to the contrary elsewhere, a back injury is not serious enought to prevent him from training, although he is receiving further treatment. However, left back Gareth Roberts and winger James Coppinger both look unlikely to play on Saturday. Both have had MRI scans for kee and groin injuries respectively, and the outcome of those scans will confirm how long both will be absent for. Alan Blayney has resumed training, and may be included in the squad for the Cheltenham game. |

Sean:
players may be jettisoned |
![]() |
With
Rovers falling into the relegation places for the first time this season
following Friday's 1-1 draw, manager Sean O'Driscoll has warned his players
that those who don't show the right attitude may be shown the exit door.
He said: "You have got to do it on the pitch and so far we haven't really done that. We are where we are because of our results and we need to improve and that was the case before I even got here." O'Driscoll has yet to win his first League match with Rovers, with the players struggling to recreate last season's form. "There have been lots of changes that I didn't expect to have made when I took over and a lot of things that I thought would be in place are not," he said. "We have got to move forward as a club, but we've got to do it together. I don't really want to drag the players along with me and the ones who don't show the right attitude will be jettisoned." |

Reserves
2 Lincoln 3 |
![]() |
The
first reserve team match in just over a month saw Rovers go down to their
second defeat of the season in their Pontins Holidays League match at
Belle Vue yesterday evening. They went behind to an 8th minute goal by Martin Gritton, with Lincoln having the majority of possession in the first half, and it came as no surprise when they increased their lead when Ryan scored in the 35th minute. Rovers then began to play a bit better, and a through ball from Thornton enabled Di Piedi to beat the offside trap to reduce the half time deficit to one goal. Lincoln restored their two goal lead within a minute of the restart, with Gritton's second goal of the evening putting them 3-1 ahead. Jason Price gave Rovers a chance by scoring in the 51st minute, but despite good pressure by Rovers, they failed to get the equaliser, despite testing the Lincoln woodwork, and the Imps having to block a number of goal-bound shots. Rovers: Ben Smith, Matt Noble, Rob Pacey, Theo Streete, Gerard Alonso, Jason Price, Antony Griffith, Sean Thornton, Liam Green, Michele Di Piedi, Bruce Dyer Substitutes used: Wade Fairhurst (for Dyer, 67), Craig Sutton (for Di Piedi, 74), Liam Nelthorpe (for Alonso, 88), Andrew Boyce, Michael Guilliat |

a win which lifts the club off the bottom of the Conference league table.
In a full Conference fixture list last night, Neil Grayson scored the
second goal for Stafford Rangers as they won 4-1 at Gravesend. Ex-Rovers
midfielder John McGrath opened the goal scoring for Tamworth last night
as they beat Grays Athletic 4-2. Finally, Craig Neltho In the preliminary round of the FA Trophy on Saturday, veteran ex-Rovers striker Wade Falana opened the scoring for Croydon Athletic in their match at Hastings United, but his side went down to a 2-1 defeat. Bruce
Dyer looks to have made a successful return from injury after playing
just over an hour of last night's reserve team game, and looks set for
a recall to the first team on Saturday at Cheltenham Town. Kevin Horlock
looks likely to be missing for a while longer, however. He played in last
week's reserve game, but suffered an adverse reaction from his first game
after knee surgery. Winger James Coppinger has had an MRI scan on Friday, is not likely to play on Saturday, although he may return to training in the next few days. Left back Gareth Roberts has resumed training, and the Rovers management are hopeful that he will be available for selection on Saturday. Keeper Alan Blayney is continuing to recover from his elbow injury, but whilst making progress, is unlikely to feature at Whaddon Road this weekend. |

Sean
O'Driscoll is still looking for his first win as manager of Doncaster
Rovers after Bruce Dyer was mysteriously denied a last minute winner.
A 25 yard free kick by Brian Stock was fumbled by the goalkeeper, the
ball ran free to Dyer, who rifled the ball into the net from only a yard
out - only to see the offside flag raised. How you can be offside when
the goalkeeper was the last to touch the ball baffled most in the ground
- someone must have been offside at the moment the free kick was taken.
A win would have perhaps flattered Rovers, who showed glimpses of the
form we know they are capable of, but for periods of the game looked like
a side lacking in confidence. It took the introduction of Jason Price
in the 66th minute, and Bruce Dyer a few minutes later to spark Rovers
into life - the frustrating narrow line-up was suddenly stretched as Price
went out wide on the right - and suddenly Rovers looked like a potent
attacking force. The evidence looked clear - Rovers were happiest doing
what they are familar with - playing with wingers who could supply balls
into the penalty area for the strikers to feed off. Price was very unlucky
with only a few minutes to go when a thunderous left-foot drive rattled
the crossbar from 20 yards, which visibly shook with the ferocity of the
shot. The draw saw Rovers drop a place to 20th, due to Cheltenham's victory at in-form Yeovil Town. The "Man of the Match" voting has now closed, and the result will be announced on Tuesday morning. |

The
goals review |
![]() |
This
week's review of goals scored by former Doncaster Rovers players is rather
shorter than usual - just the one, and that has rather unfortunate circimstances
to it. Bridlington Town striker Jamie Barnwell scored, but not before
their opponents, Stocksbridge Park Steels, had scored four times. Bridlington's
day didn't get off to a good start, conceding after three minutes before
having a man sent off in the first quarter hour for a professional foul.
Bridlington goalkeeper Gavin Kelly was sent off later on in the first
half to leave Town with only nine players. The match, played at Bridlington,
saw a 6-1 half time scoreline in favour of Stocksbridge - it ended up
9-1 at full time after easing through the second half, it taking until
the 70th minute to add to the half time score. Barnwell also ended up being voted "Man of the Match". Apart from that, the only former Rovers news came from Bristol, where Boston United travelled to Bristol Rovers. Boston lost 1-0, and had former Rover Tim Ryan sent off in the 90th minute for a second bookable offence. |

Former
Rovers manager Dave Penney seems to be getting linked with most of the
managerial vacancies at the moment. The latest club to supposedly be interested
in Dave is Millwall, who sacked Nigel Spackman recently. Their local press
report: "Other fans want a manager who has operated with success
in the lower leagues. Dave Penney, the ex-Doncaster manager, has gained
a lot of support after the success he gained while operating with a small
budget at, with all due respect, a tin-pot club. Indeed, Penney seems
to have the greatest support among supporters but that is mainly down
to the internet message board phenomenon as most fans had never heard
of the bloke before this week." Ex-Millwall manager Mark McGhee has been installed as the bookmakers' favourite. |

Doncaster
Rovers have a number of injury concerns ahead of this evening's League
One game at home to Oldham Athletic. Physio Barrie Windle has reported
that the following are uncertain to be fit enough to play this evening:
James O'Connor (muscle strain), Gareth Roberts (back), James Coppinger
(grion), Adam Lockwood (back), Jan Budtz (toe). Goalkeepers Andy Warrington and Alan Blayney will continue to be absent, although Blayney should be back in training soon. Budtz's injury is not reported to be serious, with his bruised toe not expected to prevent him from playing this evening. However, Bruce Dyer, Kevin Horlock and Michele di Piedi have recovered from injury and played in Tuesday's reserve team game at Darlington, but there is no word as to whether they will be considered for selection today. Skipper Graeme Lee will return to the side after completing a one-match ban after being sent off against Bradford City. Rovers have now reached an agreement with the Council to have their own
exclusive "Wall of fame" in the south-west corner of the new
stadium, which will be located between the new sports bar and the club
shop. The area will be for 540 bricks, which will cost £40 per brick
- exactly the same as the Council scheme, except that Rovers will receive
some of the proceeds. As the club expect that demand will exceed 540 bricks,
they have taken up an option on a second wall. Bricks will be 215mm by 65mm, which will allow to lines of text with up to 15 characters (including spaces/punctuation) per line, and purchasers will also receive a "Certificate of Authenticity". Former

since his last senior goal. His 37th minute goal for Halifax Town in their
Conference game against Kidderminster was his first since 24th April 2004,
when he scored for Cardiff City in a 2-2 draw at Preston North End. The
shock didn't do Halifax too much harm - they went on to win last night's
game 2-0. Several other former Rovers players scored in Conference action last night. Steve Burton scored Tamworth's first goal in the 43rd minute of their game at Aldershot - another ex-Rover, defender Simon Weaver, scored a second for them on the stroke of half time. The match ended in a 3-3 draw. Dino Maamria scored twice for Southport in their 2-2 draw at leaders Oxford United, and the evergreen Neil Grayson scored for Stafford Rangers. Rovers
turned out a strong team for last night's reserve team game at Darlington.
Rovers had much of the possession for the game, and really ought to have
won by a much larger margin, but some good play by Stockdale, the Darlington
keeper, prevented the deadlock being broken until well into the second
half. Rovers' possession succeeded in saves or corners, and it took until
the last twenty minutes for what proved to be the only goal of the game.
An over-hit cross went to McCammon on the right of the Darlington penalty
area, who returned a lofted ball into the far post for Dyer to crash home
in style. Darlington responded for the last ten minutes by attacking,
but they couldn't find a way through the Rovers defence, with Rovers running
out as deserved victors. Rovers: Ben Smith, Antony Griffith, Theo Streete, Matt Noble, Liam Green, Jason Price, Sean Thornton, Kevin Horlock, Jonathan Forte, Bruce Dyer, Mark McCammon Substitutes: Michele Di Piedi (for Forte, 51), Andrew Boyce (for Streete, 64), Gerard Alonso (for Price), Barry Richardson |

Former Rover Richard
Offiong scored yesterday for Hamilton in the Scottish First Division
as they drew 1-1 against Queen of the South, despite only having ten
men for the last half hour of the game. Amazingly, that was only Queen
of the South's second point of the season! (That's still better than
poor Elgin City, rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Third Division
with NO points, having now played all other teams in their division!) |
