Rovers 1 Wednesday 0
Rovers put on a scintillating first half show for a packed Keepmoat Stadium this afternoon, and whilst the scoreline was only 1-0, the gap between the two sides was huge, with the visitors chasing shadows for much of the first half. Rovers had the upper hand in the early stages of the second half, but Sheffield Wednesday then managed to gain a bit of possession which meant that the Rovers defence had to withstand a bit of pressure. The Rovers midfield bossed the game, which nullified any threat that the Owls may have mustered.
Rovers went in front after half an hour, with Paul Heffernan heading home from a ball put into the goalmouth by James Coppinger - he could have had two goals before that stage, and the goal rounded off a move which saw one of many long periods of possession, with over 20 passes being strung together inthe build-up. The result puts Rovers up to the heady heights of 16th in the Championship, with all those clubs just above them dropping points. Rovers are now seven points ahead of the drop zone, with the jubliant Rovers fans chanting "We are staying up" at the final whistle. At this rate, is it too late to mount a challenge for the play-off places? We will see!

What the managers said
One thing was clear from the comments of both managers after yesterday's match at the Keepmoat Stadium - Rovers played well, and Rovers deserved their victory.
Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll said: "I thought we worked hard and got what we deserved. In the first half we were sparkling and we could have put the game out of reach. But they stuck an extra man in midfield and came back into it in the second half. We got a bit 'champagne football' at times and you have to be careful because one misplaced-pass in this division and you can be punished, but overall I was pleased with the performance and the result."
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws admitted that his side were second best for long periods of the match and had no complaints about the end result.
He said: "For the first 10 minutes we were composed and passed the ball well - after that we were second-best for the rest of the half. We just started lashing at the ball and that was disappointing because if you don't have composure you don't win games. It's easy to say that we should have come here and got a result after beating Sheffield United last week but that would be disrespectful to Doncaster. They are the form team in the division at present. They pass the ball very well and play with a lot of confidence. Sometimes you have to give the opposition credit however hard it is to say that."

Budtz to Latics
Former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Jan Budtz has joined Oldham Athletic on a month's loan and made his debut for the Latics in yesteray's 2-1 win over Northampton Town. Oldham found themselves short of goalkeepers, with Mark Crossly currently injured, and his deputy, Greg Fleming was sent off last weekend against Leicester City, which resulted in veteran striker Dean Windass going in goal for half of the game. The Danish keeper has been out of favour at Hartlepool this season, playing only three first team matches, all in December.
Budtz made his name for Rovers in the 2005/06 season when he came on for an injured Andy Warrington against Manchester City in the Carling Cup, and went on to become a hero in the penalty shoot-out, which Rovers won 3-0 after the match had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.

Lewer to leave crisis club Weymouth
Ex-Rovers assistant manager Alan Lewer will leave crisis Blue Square Premier club Weymouth next week with the club launching a major share issue as it battles for survival. In an interview with Radio Solent, Lewer said that the club needed a cash injection of up to £150,000 to surive, and had issued a million shares at 50p each in an effort to raise funds. If that strategy is unsuccessful, the Terras could face either administration or liquidation. The players, who have not been paid at all in 2009, are also free to leave the club.
Lewer has told the club that he would look at the situation after yesterday's match - they suffered their second successive home defeat in that game, against Stevenage Borough.
Another Weymouth story with a Rovers connection - former Rovers defender Kevin Sandwith was appointed as club captain at the club a week ago following the departure of Anton Robinson to Bournemouth. Sandwith accepted the role after training last week.
Lewer said: "Kevin is a fantastic pro and a model of consistency at this level. I have known him since he was 19, so I know the animal and he is a winner, and I think the supporters have already seen that. The players also respect him and I think he would be the unanimous choice as captain in their belief as well.”

Rovers v Sheffield Wednesday
Rovers may well have to leave a decision on whether to play defender Matt Mills until the last minute after the freezing weather of the last week meant that Rovers have had to train on an artificial surface. Mills was struggling with a groin injury in the second half of last week's win against Blackpool, and Rovers were hoping that he would be able to prove his fitness in training this week. However, as Sean O'Driscoll explained: "He was somebody who should have trained today but we didn't want to risk him on a surface that was particularly dangerous with a groin. We don't really know how he is going to react to training. We may have to wait until the last minute to make a decision on him."
Rovers are also to take a decision on whether to include new signing Dean Shiels in the squad. The Rovers boss was mystified by the news that came out during the week that Shiels had an ankle injury, to which he said: "All we heard on Sky news was that he was struggling with an ankle injury. But when we rung him he didn't think that it was that serious and he thought that he'd be OK. But he didn't play so until he comes back we are unsure of the problem. We have had no contact with the Northern Ireland physios or team doctor which is a bit disappointing when you let players out on international duty. That has happened once or twice before with Northern Ireland so that's something we need to clear up. If Dean is fit he'll come into contention for a place in the squad."
Midfielder Richie Wellens is fit to play despite picking up a "dead leg" in the Blackpool match, so apart from the above doubts, we expect Rovers to be unchanged this afternoon.
Apart from that, Sean McDaid continues to recover from knee surgery, and whilst James Hayter has resumed full training this week, he is some way off a first team return.
Sheffield Wednesday have no new injury or supsensin problems, and so are likely to be unchanged from last week's game against Sheffield United. Francis Jeffers completes a three match ban, so will be unavailable today, whilst Akpo Sodje is still not quite match fit.
Rovers will be hoping to keep their unbeaten league run going, whilst Wednesday will have their eyes on closing the gap on the play-off places; they are currently eight points adrift - but history is against them, as they have not won back-to-back league wins since November. Depending on other results, Rovers could end the day as high as 16th if they win.

Change of ref
The referee for this afternoon's game against Sheffield Wednesday has been changed. Martin Atkinson will no longer be in charge - Neil Swarbrick, who was originally listed as the fourth official, will take over, with Anthony Taylor being drafted in.
The full list of officials for the game will now be:
Referee: Neil Swarbrick
Assistant referees: Andrew Butler & Richard West
Fourth official: Anthony Taylor

Boss wants the points
Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll has said that he wants to win this afternoon's game - not because it's against Sheffield Wednesday, but because he wants Rovers to stay in the Championship. A win would boost the Rovers points total to 37 - 13 adrift of the fabled 50 points saftey target, although no doubt a few more are needed to avoid an anxious last few matches of the season.
He said: "We want to win the game, not because it's a Sheffield game but because we want to stay in the Championship. We need to do the things we're good at rather than things the occasion makes us do."

Extra police drafted in for match
South Yorkshire Police have cancelled all leave and will have around 250 officers on duty for this afternoon's home game against Sheffield Wednesday. Sheffield Wednesday have sold all of their 3,500 ticket allocation and the match is heading for a sell-out. South Yorkshire Police are being augmented by fifty officers who are being sent down from North Yorkshire.
Doncaster town centre is expected to be busy from noon onwards, and unlike previous high profile games such as against Leeds United last season, the police have confirmed that they have not asked the pubs to close. However, severe traffic congesiton is expected in the Lakeside and Belle Vue areas both before and after the match.

Youth team game off
This morning's youth team game against Lincoln City has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Cantley Park. The clubs are yet to agree a revised date for this match.
The home game against Chesterfield, which was postponed earlier in the season, will now be played on Saturday, 28th February.

O'Driscoll - we have to keep run going
Doncaster Rovers' recent good form, which has seen them go undefeated in the league since Boxing Day, has resulted in the club climbing out of the relegation places. Whilst Rovers are now four points ahead of third from bottom club Watford, boss Sean O'Driscoll realises how important it is to keep the run going.
He said: "It's not a question of can we keep the run going - we just have to. The Blackpool result has given us a bit of breathing space but the moment you relax or lose focus you will be back in trouble again."
He continued: "To be fair to the players I don't really think there is much danger of that. They have kept their feet on the ground all season and I don't think anyone is getting carried away now. What we have to do is keep maintaining our performance levels and remembering the things we have learned - and if we do that the results should follow."

Injury doubts ahead of Owls clash
Rovers defenders Matt Mills and James O'Connor are rated as doubtful for tomorrow's home game against Sheffield Wednesday, with Mills suffering from a groin injury, and O'Connor a knee injury. Sean O'Driscoll is hoping that both will be passed fit for the game, although it looks as though he will have to do without Steve Brooker for a couple of weeks as he continues to progress towards full fitness after his calf injury. New signing Dean Shiels is expected to recover from a slight ankle injury that put him in doubt for Northern Ireland's game against San Marino during the week, and could make his Rovers debut tomorrow.

Youth date arranged
Doncaster Rovers have confirmed that the home Puma Youth Alliance game against Rotherham United has been arranged for Tuesday, 17th March with an 11.00am kick-off. The match should have been played last Saturday, but was postponed due to the outside Keepmoat Stadium pitches being frozen and snow-covered.

Rovers Belles get sponsorship for big match
Doncaster Rovers Belles, who have been searching for a shirt sponsor ahead of their Women's League Cup Final against Arsenal on February 26th, have been successful in their quest. They will have opticians Vision Value as their shirt sponsors for the final in a one-off deal, who will no doubt have been attracted by the fact that the game is being broadcast on Setanta Sports, with last season's final being watched by around 130,000 people.
Manager John Buckley said: "We are delighted to have found a sponsor for the final. Times are hard financially for everybody so we're grateful for the support of Vision Value. Three thousand pounds doesn't sound a fortune but it's crucial for us and helps boost our finances."
The final, which is being played at Scunthorpe United's Glanford Park ground, is Doncaster Rovers Belles' first appearance in a major final for the last twelve seasons.
The Rovers Belles are still in dire financial trouble despite staving off closure in September and have continued their struggle to keep afloat without substantial sponsorship all season. Despite their financial problems, the club have improved form in the second half of the season and are currently fourth in the Women's Premier League.

Birmingham - will they go away now?
There is a chance that Birmingham City's interest in Rovers defender Matthew Mills will cease - at least for the rest of the season. Despite continuing speculation in the Birmingham local press, Birmingham yesterday signed Portsmouth's defender Djimi Traore on a three month loan. Traore joined Portsmouth for £1 million two years ago, but has failed to hold down a regular first team place this season.
Despite being knocked back by Rovers chairman John Ryan, the Birmingham Mail has reported that talks resumed between Rovers and City over the weekend, but were told that it would take an "eye watering" offer to convince Rovers to allow Mills to leave. That suggests that, for Rovers to even consider any offer, Birmingham will have to considerably improve the £1.5 million offer made at the end of January.
Mills, of course, could attract even more attention if he keeps up his good form during the rest of the season, which would provide more competition for Birmingham City. Intriguingly, if Mills signed loan forms today, he would only be able to stay for 93 days, which would mean his loan would run until May 16th. Should City find themselves in the end of season play-offs, he may not be able to play a play-off final - the semi-finals are scheduled between 8th and 17th May, with the final played at Wembley on May 25th.

Kinnear to have heart op
Former Doncaster Rovers manager Joe Kinnear will have to undergo an emergency heart operation after being taken ill just before Newcastle United's game against West Bromwich Albion last weekend. Kinnear has spent five days in hospital undergoing tests after feeling unwell last Saturday, and had been hoping to be discharged from hospital soon. Instead, it looks as though he will be advised to rest for the rest of the season to fully recover from the operation. Newcastle have said that assistant manager Chris Hughton will take charge of the side whilst Kinnear is out of action, with Colin Calderwood assisting him.

Shiels makes the bench
Far from being ruled out of the Northern Ireland squad for last night's World Cup match against San Marino due to an ankle injury, new signing Dean Shiels was named amongst the substitutes for the game. News reports from numerous sources earlier in the day stated that Shiels would definitely not be considered, which now appear to be wide of the mark. However, Shiels was an unused substitute as Northern Ireland recorded a 3-0 win, which moves them into second place in their World Cup qualifying group.

Doolan leaves Southport
Ex-Rovers midfielder John Doolan has left Blue Square North promotion contenders Southport by mutual consent. He made the decision after discussing the future direction of the squad with boss Liam Watson. Doolan joined Southport last summer as player/coach. Southport issued a statement saying they wish John every success in his future career as a player, coach and manager.

Shiels misses out
New Doncaster Rovers signing Dean Shiels misses out on playing for Northern Ireland this evening in their World Cup qualifier against San Marino. He had been called up to the squad, but has been ruled out by an ankle injury. After signing for Rovers at the end of January, Shiels missed the away game at Blackpool on Saturday, with Sean O'Driscoll saying it was due to the player not being able to train with the squad due to adverse weather conditions.

Elliott on target again
Stuart Elliott, on loan at Grimsby Town from Doncaster Rovers, scored for the Mariners last night in their 3-3 draw at Barnet in League Two. The goal was Stuart's second since joining Grimsby in January, his first came a fortnight ago in their 1-1 home draw against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Stock after more caps
Rovers midfielder Brian Stock is hoping that transfer speculation that linked him with a move to a Premiership club during the January transfer window will help him to earn his first full cap for Wales. Press talk suggested that Fulham, Wigan and West Bromwich Albion were interested in signing him, but nothing came of the speculation, meaning that Brian is at Rovers until at least the end of the season. However, after not being included in the Wales squad for this evening's game against Poland, he is hoping that the attention of top flight clubs will bring him to the attention of the Welsh manager, John Toshack, again.
Stock had beeen named for Wales on two previous occasions, but was an unused substitute on both occasions. He received Welsh Under-21 caps whilst with Bournemouth.
Stock said in an interview with Radio Sheffield: "I was disappointed not to be in the squad. I'll have to try something a bit more special to get into it."

Stags want to keep Tomi
Blue Square Premier club Mansfield Town are hoping that Doncaster Rovers will allow them to keep striker Tomi Ameobi for a further month after impressing boss David Holdsworth during his first month at the club.
The Stags' boss said: "Tomi is a great lad with a lovely smile. And how hard did he work on Saturday? He is a credit to himself and his parent club. So I would love to keep him if we can. I am not surprised how he has conducted himself, even though he hasn't been starting, as I won't bring big time Charlies here. If you bring in a player from a Premiership club they expect him to start and can put a clause in to say so. But Doncaster have been open and honest and lovely people to do business with and we are very grateful for them allowing him to come here.
Ameobi's initial month at the club expires after this weekend's match against Cambridge United.

Ryan - Mills going nowhere
Rovers chairman John Ryan has spoken about the latest round of rumours surrounding the prospect of centre back Matt Mills moving to Birmingham City. The latest story in the Birmingham press is that they will take him on loan for the rest of the season, followed by a full move in the summer. However, the Rovers chief told the Doncaster Free Press: "It's all nonsense as far as I'm concerned. Nobody has contacted me about a loan deal of that nature and if they did they would get short shrift. I keep trying to tell people we are not a selling club any more but it doesn't seem to have sunk in."
"Of course everyone has their price and if someone came along and offered £5million to take Matt on loan then we might consider it but, at the risk of repeating myself, we don't want to sell Matt or any of our top players."
Ryan also confirmed that the player is happy to stay at Rovers, although he appreciates that Mills has ambitions to play at as high a level as possible. "Obviously he is ambitious to further his career but he is 100% committed to Doncaster Rovers."

Stock overlooked
Rovers skipper Brian Stock came fourth in the Powerade Championship "Player of the Month" for January. The result was revealed last night on the Sky Sports programme "The Big League Weekend 2", which saw the top four being:
1) Joe Ledley (Cardiff City)
2) Jason Scotland (Swansea City)
3) DJ Campbell (Blackpool)
4) Brian Stock (Doncaster Rovers)

Crichton's new job
Former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Paul Crichton has been appointed as Norwich City's new goalkeeping coach. He replaces Tommy Wright, who has left the club following the recent change of management at the club. Crichton leaves a similar role at Brighton & Hove Albion to join Bryan Gunn's team. It is his second time at the Canaries - he was previously at Carrow Road between 2001 and 2004, when he was mainly used as an understudy to current England goalkeeper Robert Green.
Paul played for Rovers between 1990 and 1993, during which time he played 77 games for the club before leaving for a three year stint at Grimsby Town.
February 10, 2009
O'Driscoll - Brooker could be a bargain!
Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll thinks that Rovers could benefit from Steve Brooker's injury problems of the last few seasons, as without them, the club may well not be able to have afforded to sign him. Brooker signed for an undisclosed fee a few days ahead of January's transfer deadline from Bristol City, but will not play for the first team until he proves his fitness in a reserve team game.
O'Driscoll said: "He's had a lot of bad luck with injuries but there are no long term problems. If he had been injury free for the last few seasons we wouldn't have been able to afford him. I actually think his best years could be ahead of him. He will have a run out in a reserve match next week but I won't rush him into the first team until he is fully fit and ready."

Season over for Barker
Ex-Rovers striker Richie Barker has been ruled out for the rest of the season after having surgery on a knee injury. Barker, now aged 33, signed for Rotherham on New Year's Day after joining the club on loan earlier in the season from Hartlepool United, has been out of action since early January with the injury.
Rotherham boss Mark Robins said: "He had been a regular in the squad to the turn of the year, but the injury just happened and then the examination revealed the extent of it and what was required. It's dreadful luck for the lad and the club because a fit Richie Barker is a real asset."

Ross to Croydon
Former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Ross Flitney has moved from Grays Athletic to Croydon Athletic on a full transfer. He was signed by Rovers on loan as goalkeeping cover during the 2004/05 season, but did not make a first team appearance during his time at Belle Vue.
Flitney began his career at Fulham, where he was also loaned out to Brighton & Hove Albion and Yeading, before moving to Barnet on a full transfer. He them moved on to Grays Athletic in 2007, where he has remained until the move to Croydon, who play in the Ryman Division 1 South.

Blackpool 2 Rovers 3
A superb win at Bloomfield Road, Rovers' first victory at Blackpool's ground, gave Rovers three valuable points in their continuing pull away from the relegation places. Rovers took advantage of several other teams being inactive due to the weather, with the win taking them up to the giddy heights of 19th place, four points above Watford, who currently lie in 22nd place.
Rovers got off to a slow start, with Sullivan being tested with long-range shots in the 7th minute from Campbell and Adam, and it was perhaps no surprise that they went behind in the 15th minute. That setback kick-started Rovers into action and it took 11 more minutes for them to be level, thanks to a superb strike by top scorer Brian Stock.
After the first half finished level at 1-1, three goals in ten second half minutes saw Rovers ahead. They took the lead through Sam Hird, only for Blackpool to equalise almost immediately, but the winner went to Rovers as Coppinger latched onto a great through-ball by Stock before firing a great shot past stand-in keeper Matt Gilks. Blackpool then had to play the last 13 minutes of the game with ten men after debutant Charlie Adam was sent off for a kick on Richie Wellens.
This means that Rovers have now won four successive away league matches, and are unbeaten in six Championship matches, which gives them a great chance of a mid-table place in the next few weeks.

Coppinger - "great game to play in"
Jamie Coppinger recognised the significance of yesterday's win at Blackpool, in which he scored the winning goal. With matches involving the bottom clubs called off due to frozen pitches, Rovers capitalised on the situation with the victory.
Coppinger said: "That was a great game to play in. We are learning a lot through the season and feel that we have the ability to stay in the Championship. It was an important one for us to win today with other clubs not playing. Blackpool are a good side and got a great win at Palace with 10 men last week. It was an exciting match and we knew we just had to keep going because there was so little in it at times."

What the managers said
It was not many weeks ago that Rovers struggled to score one goal a game - yet yesterday they showed that their scoring prowess remains intact as they scored three goals, making it their fourth away league win in a row.
Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll said: "It was an exciting game between two well matched sides. I thought we did really well to come back from being one nil down. Our finishing was particularly good and that was our fourth away win in the league on the trot. You can't do that unless you finish well. I have no problems with the sending off. If my player was stamped on the man had to go. Richie Wellens is not the sort of player to try and con the ref."
Blackpool's manager, Tony Parkes said: "Last week we defended heroically at Palace but this week we left holes at the back and Doncaster exploited them. You don't concede three at home and really expect to win, although when DJ Campbell grabbed that second goal for us I thought we were in with a shout - but Rovers came back again. As far as the sending off is concerned the referee must have had a pretty clear view."
February 8, 2009
Roberts on the mark
Former Doncaster Rovers striker Neil Roberts scored twice in Rhy's 4-2 home win over Neath yesterday afternoon, which means that Rhyl maintain a two point lead at the top of the Welsh Premier League.
We haven't been able to find any other former Rovers players scoring yesterday, with a large number of matches being postponed owing to frozen pitches, especially at non-league level.
February 8, 2009
Kinnear taken to hospital
Former Rovers manager Joe Kinnear was taken to hospital yesterday lunchtime after feeling unwell. He was admitted to hospital after being checked by the club's medical staff ahead of Newcastle's game against West Bromwich Albion and went in to hospital as a precautionary measure. Assistant Chris Hughton took charge of the side for yesterday's match, which ended with a 3-2 win for Newcastle.
This is not Kinnear's first problem with ill health. He suffered a mild heart attack in March 1999 during his time as manager at Wimbledon, which led to him standing down from the job. He then managed at Luton Town and Nottingham Forest before spending four years out of the game, returning at St James' Park in September 2008.
A club spokesman said: "He will remain in hospital for observation for a couple of days and will then be discharged."
February 8, 2009
Oji released
Former Rovers loan defender Sam Oji has left League Two club Hereford United after reaching the end of his short-term contract, with the club electing not to offer him an extension to his stay at Edgar Street.
Sam joined the Bulls in August after being released by Leyton Orient, but has been injured for much of this season, limiting him to just four league starts.
He spent just over a month at Rovers whilst on loan from Birmingham City during the 2005/06 season, making one start and four subsitute appearances during his time at the club.

Blackpool v Rovers
Doncaster Rovers return to league action this afternon after their exploits in the FA Cup during the week, and will be looking to capitalise on their recent good form and the fact that relegation threatened Watford and Southampton are not in action today owing to the freezing weather conditions at Vicarage Road, and Charlton's home game against Cardiff has also fallen victim to the weather. Depending on other results, a win today could see Rovers as high as 17th place, and more importantly, four points ahead of the relegation spots.
Rovers have no new injury concerns for today's game, but new signing Dean Shiels is likely to be added to the squad and may make his Rovers debut at Bloomfield Road. He is, however, unlikely to start as he has not been able to have a full week's training due to the inclement weathe conditions at Cantley Park. Sean McDaid and James Hayter continue absences as they recover from knee injuries, whilst Ben Smith is out with an ankle injury. New signing Steve Brooker will also miss out as he recovers from a calf injury. Skipper Brian Stock is again considered as a slight doubt for the game but we expect, as usual, that he will be passed fit to play.
Blackpool will be wtihout a number of players this afternoon. Matt Gilks is set to be in goal as regular choice Paul Rachubka is suspended after being sent off against Crystal Palace. Also missing are Ben Burgess (knee), Keith Southern (ankle), Stuart Green and Stephen McPhee (knee), although Rob Edwards (hamstring) and Stephen Crainey (hip) may return after resuming training this week, although they are still considered as doubtful to be fit enough to play. Former Rover Jermaine Wright has also been training and has an outside chance of playing this afternoon. New signings Charlie Adam and Francesco Carratta may also be included in the squad, although both are unlikely to start..
Rovers midfielder Richie Wellens faces his former club this afternoon.

Birmingham make sneaky move for Mills
Birmingham City look as though they are making a "crafty" move for Rovers defender Matt Mills, despite the fact that Rovers knocked back their transfer deadline day bid for the player. The Birmingham Mail reports that City are set to make a loan bid for the player, in which they would pay a £1.5 million "loan fee" to take him to St Andrews for the rest of the season, and then a £50,000 goodwill payment to sign him on a full transfer in the summer.
Birmingham have not directly named the player, although it does not take much to work out who David Sullivan is talking about when he said: “All is not lost. We still have quite a few avenues open to us. On a player we got very, very close to signing on Monday – we were just beaten by a couple of hours – we have gone back and offered virtually the transfer fee they (his club) said they would accept for the loan of the player, with an option then to buy him then for a nominal figure at the end of the season. So effectively we would be buying the player, albeit initially it would be a loan."
The original deal offered by Birmingham was understood to involve a series of payments for the player rather than one up-front payment, which was part of the reason why the bid was rejected by Rovers. Apparently by making this move, Birmingham would not be breaking any Football League rules, with all clubs being able to loan players from Tuesday.
The Birmingham Mail article also mentions that the player is "understood to be keen on the move", with City's tactics clearly also aimed at unsettling the player.

Youth game off
This morning's youth team game against Rotherham United has been postponed due to the freezing weather conditions. The game was due to be played on one of the outside Keepmoat Stadium pitches, but they are still partially covered with snow, and with subzero temperatures last night, they are also frozen.

Blackpool pitch looks OK
Blackpool reported yesterday that they expect this afternoon's match to go ahead despite freezing weather conditions affecting the whole country thsi week. They described the pitch as "crunchy" yesterday, but with temperatures expected to be above zero today (although not by much!), the pitch is expected to be playable.

Elliott stays on for another month
Doncaster Rovers midfielder Stuart Elliott has agreed to extend his loan at Grimsby Town for a further month. Elliott's current deal runs out after this weekend's game against Exeter City, but Grimsby Town have confirmed that on Monday he will sign an extension for a further month, meaning he will remain at Blundell Park until 9th March. Boss Mike Newell has been impressed with the form of the Northern Ireland international, saying: "Stuart and the other loan players have given us something different. I don't think we've seen the best from him yet. He will get fitter with first team games, and he has always got a goal in him."
Elliott has made four appearances for the Mariners so far, scoring one goal.

Former Doncaster Rovers striker Andy Campbell has completed a transfer from Farsley Celtic to Bradford Park Avenue, the latest move in a much-travelled career, which has also seen him play for Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City, Doncaster Rovers, Oxford United, Dunfermline Athletic and Halifax Town.
He started his time at Bradford off well, scoring in his first start as Park Avenue beat Marine 4-0.

Weaver for Redditch
Former Doncaster Rovers loan defender Simon Weaver has signed for Blue Square North club Redditch United after being released by King's Lynn last month. He made his debut in Wednesday's 2-1 victory in a relegation tussle at Hyde United, and was influential in organising their defence. With another new signing, Michael Briscoe, also making his debut in defence, Redditch boss Gary Whild said: "They gave us a bit of direction at the back. They are two experienced centre halves and that helped everyone, especially the younger players."

Aston Villa 3 Rovers 1
Doncaster Rovers impressed all those attending Villa Park last night with the style of their play, but despite playing some neat passing football, they had a mountain to climb after they conceded two early goals. Spurred on by a travelling support of approaching 5,000 supporters, Rovers had their chances to keep the scores closer, but either could not break through a determined Villa defence, or were guilty of some wayward finishing.
Villa's first chance came in the 4th minute, when Ashley Young hit a 20 yard shot just over the bar. The home side took the lead after being the beneficiaries of a dubious free kick award by referee Lee Mason. Craig Gardner's close range shot was parried by Neil Sullivan, with Steve Sidwell scoring from the follow-up. Four minutes later, and it was more bad luck for Rover, with a shot by Carew being deflected to loop over a helpless Sullivan and into the net.
Richie Wellens, James Coppinger and Jason Price all had opportunities to reduce the arrears in th next few minutes, but it took until the stroke of half time for Rovers to score. Coppinger gained possession before crossing the ball for Jason Price to strike a left foot shot home.
Rovers came out 'all guns blazing' after the break, and were unlucky not to be on level terms when Brian Stock had a 20 yard shot tipped around the post in the 57th minute. Any hopes of salvaging anything from the match were dashed four minutes later when Villa scored a third goal on the break, with Delfounseso's glancing header meaning there was no way back for Rovers.
Rovers continued to press and were impressing the Villa faithful with the quality of their football - Coppinger and Price had good opportunities, and Sam Hird had a close range shot go close seven minutes from time.
So the FA Cup dream is over, and it's back to the bread and butter of the league on Saturday, when Rovers travel to Blackpool. If they play like this though, the upturn in Rovers' fortunes ought to continue sufficiently to leave the relegation places behind.

Ross called up for Scotland
Former Doncaster Rovers loan striker Ross McCormack, now at Cardiff City, has been called up to attend next week's Scotland training camp at St Andrews. The recognition comes with the striker enjoying prolific form after joining the Bluebirds in the summer - with fourteen goals to his name already.

Nelly on standby for England
Former Doncaster Rovers winger Craig Nelthorpe has been placed on standby for England C's game against Malta's Under-21's later this month. The recognition comes despite the fact that Nelthorpe only joined the club on 14th January, since when he has only played five games for Oxford United.
The game is at the Hibernians Stadium in Paola on Tuesday, February 17th.

Green on target

Aston Villa v Rovers
Doncaster Rovers travel to Villa Park this evening for an FA Cup fourth round replay, with the winners due to travel to Merseyside, where they will meet the winners of tonight's replay between Liverpool and Everton. Whilst both sides have said that they could do without the distraction of a cup replay, with both wanting to concentrate on the league, both managers are set to name strong sides this evening, although Martin O'Neill is expected to rest some key players.
Martin Woods is expected to return this evening after missing last Friday's match due to a virus, but Brian Stock is still reported to be suffering from a calf injury, and will face a late fitness test before Sean O'Driscoll names his side. Rovers will definitely be without new signings Steve Brooker and Dean Shiels, who were both signed after the original tie was played, so are both ineligible.
Aston Villa welcome back John Carew after a back injury which has kept him out for three months, and Ashley Young returns after completing a three match suspension. They will, however, be without Stiliyan Petrove, who is banned for the game. Emile Heskey, who was not included in Villa's side at the Keepmoat Stadium despite being signed on the previous day, is available to play if required.
The match is expected to go ahead despite the wintry conditions of late, as Villa Park have had undersoil heating on - any danger of postponement is more likely to come from travel and public safety problems outside the ground, which now seem unlikely.

Ryan confirms Mills bid rejected
Rovers chairman John Ryan confirmed yesterday that the club had rejected a bid for defender Matthew Mills by Birmingham City. City have been reported to have been chasing Mills for some time, with press reports having mentioned figures of up to £1.5 million.
Ryan is quoted as saying: "The rejection of the bid reaffirms the importance of Matthew Mills to Doncaster Rovers. Both the management and Board feel that Matt is integral to the progress of the club. The Club have had great interest in a number of our players, but the Board and management want to build a side that can compete at the top of the Championship and beyond. We hope that the fans appreciate the level of commitment by the Board to not make Doncaster Rovers a 'selling' club. We now hope that the fans come out to support the club and to back the Board in their ambition."

Shiels deal goes through
The transfer of Dean Shiels from Hibernian to Doncaster Rovers went through yesterday, with the player signing a three and a half year contract. Whilst the transfer fee is described as "undisclosed", by reports in The Times, the figure is £60,000.
The 24 year old finalised personal terms and passed a medical ahead of last night's transfer deadline, with Shiels saying: "I'm delighted with the move. I had four-and-a-half years with Hibernian and this was an exciting challenge. I can't wait to get started. The style of football was on of the things that attracted me to Doncaster and the chance to work with Sean O'Driscoll was another one. I know the Club is ambitious and I think it was a perfect choice for me."
Shiels began his career in Arsenal's youth team and arrived at Hibernian in 2004, when he became a first team regular under three different managers.
Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen had offered Shiels, 24, a new deal but the player was keen to move to the Championship.
Shiels has been given the number 16 shirt at Rovers and could make his debut at Blackpool on Saturday, as long as international clearance comes through in time. He is ineligible to play in tomorrow's away game at Aston Villa.

Chairboys swoop for Pittman
Former Doncaster Rovers striker Jon-Paul Pittman signed for League Two club Wycombe Wanderers yesterday after making his name by scorign 17 goals so far this season for Crawley Town. He could make his debut for Wycombe this evening, should Adams Park survive this morning's pitch inspection.
The transfer fee is understood to be a five-figure sum, with 'add-on' clauses set to earn Crawley additional income from the deal.
Crawley boss Steve Evans said: "Everyone at Crawley Town Football Club is disappointed that JP is leaving but he is a terrific kid and we all wish him every success. He came here at a low time for him in football and we have helped re-build his confidence. We have worked with him continuously on the training ground and his hard graft has been rewarded."

Paul Birch
We are saddened to hear of the death of former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Paul Birch. He had been suffering from cancer for some time and died this morning at the Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield earlier this morning.
Paul enjoyed a nineteen year career as a professional footballer, during which he made 462 first team appearances until he retired in 1999. Mainly known for his eleven years at Aston Villa between 1980 and 1991, when he played over 200 games, he became a popular figure at Belle Vue in the 1996/97 season before becoming another victim of the bizarre events which happened under the Richardson regime. Most Rovers fans will recall the supporters meeting at which manager Kerry Dixon confirmed that he did not pick the team - the meeting asked that a message be passed to Ken Richardson that they felt that Paul Birch ought to play in the following game. He went on to put in a "Man of the Match" performance in that game, a 2-1 home defeat against Exeter City - before being released by Rovers the following week. He then signed for Exeter, where he stayed for two years before retiring in 1999.
We would like to pass on our condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. We hope that Aston Villa and Doncaster Rovers will see fit to hold a minute's silence before Wednesday's match between the two sides at Villa Park.

Weaver for Stags
Ex-Rovers centre back Simon Weaver is interesting Blue Square Premier club Mansfield Town after being released by Blue Square North King's Lynn. The Doncaster-born defender was scheduled to play for the Stags' reserve side last week on a trial basis.
Stags boss Dean Holdsworth said: "Simon is an experienced centre half who is a good character. We have had a look at him in training and now he will be given an opportunity in a match. I have seen him before and spoken to various people about him. He is an option for us and it does not hurt to have a look."
Weaver played two games for Rovers on loan during the 1997/98 season.
Blue Square North's Redditch are also understood to be interested in Weaver, and are reported to be in talks with the player.

Shiels move to go through today
Hibernian midfielder/striker Dean Shiels is set to sign for Doncaster Rovers, with Skysports.com reporting that the player has now agreed personal terms with the club. He has to complete his medical and will sign later today, although international clearance then has to be arranged due to his current club not being in England. No fee has been disclosed, but Sean O'Driscoll said: "The Championship will be a good test for him and we could have waited until the end of the season but to be fair to Hibernian, we have done a deal that suits everybody in the sense that they get something for him and we'll pay a little but more if we stay up, a little bit more when he plays a few games for us. It just works for us. We can't go out and spend £200,000 or £300,000 on players, so the odd 50 grand here and there is better. He's a good age at 24, technically very good, so we hope he will improve the squad."
The Northern Ireland inernational would have been out of contract at the end of the season and would have been available on a "Bosman" free transfer in the summer. Whilst there had been interest in the player from other clubs, only Rovers matched Hibernian's valuation of Shiels.
February 2, 2009
Transfer deadline day
The transfer "window" closes at 5pm this afternoon - the deadline is usually the end of January, but has been extended so that deals can be conducted on a working day. The Football Association explained: "This is consistent with the decision taken in August, when the deadline was extended to September 1 and has the support of the majority of national associations and European leagues."
No loan signings may be made for seven days after the transfer window closes, but loans can them be made until Thursday, March 26th.

Boyce signs
After being released by Doncaster Rovers a couple of weeks ago, defender Andrew Boyce has now signed on a full transfer for Worksop Town. Boyce has been on loan at the Tigers for most of the season to give him first team match experience, but never got the opportunity to play in the first team squad at Rovers after being awarded his first professional contract last summer.

Taylor turns down loan move
Doncaster Rovers striker Gareth Taylor has turned down a loan move to League One neighbours Scunthorpe United, it was revealed yesterday. Rover boss Sean O'Driscoll confirmed that Rovers had received an approach to take Taylor to Glanford Park for a month, but that the player wanted to stay and fight for his place.
O'Driscoll said: "Nigel Adkins, the Scunthorpe United boss, spoke to me about him and I spoke to Gareth and at this particular time, Gareth wants to stay. We would have been okay with Gareth going there for a month, with Brooker and Dean (Shiels) coming in, we could do that. But, it's Gareth's prerogative and that's not a problem. That might change as things progress but at this minute in time, he is happy where he is."

Goals review
Our review of former Doncaster Rovers players scoring goals yesterday begins in the Championship, where Michael McIndoe scored Bristol City's first goal on the way to a 2-0 home win over Barnsley.
In non-league football, it was the third round of the FA Trophy, where Adriano Rigoglioso scored the only goal of the game for Forest Green Rovers as they beat Hednesford Town at home.
Lastly, we drop into the UniBond First Division (South). Neil Grayson scored Glapwell's winner in their 2-1 victory at Gresley Rovers, and Ben Saunders scored a consolation goal in the 75th minute for Shepshed Dynamo in their 6-1 defeat at Willenhall Town.

Newell wants Stuart to stay
Grimsby Town boss Mike Newell wants Rovers midfielder Stuart Elliott to extend his month's loan at Blundell Park after doing well so far for the Mariners, which saw him score his first goal for his new club last week. Newell is reported to be in talks with Elliott about extending his stay and, with the Northern Ireland international having struggled to feature regularly in the Rovers first team since his arrival, we expect that extension to go through in due course.

What the managers said
Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll was critical of the state of the Keepmoat Stadium pitch after Friday's home draw against Norwich. He said: "It's a pitch more suited to growing potatoes than playing football. We like to pass the ball around, we are not a team that goes route one. But we will just have to get a bit more savvy."
Of the game, the Rovers chief commented: We couldn't quite get a rhythm going, They were getting ten men behind the ball. It was up to us to force it; we're not a team that likes to bangs it forward, so it was a difficult task."
"To be fair, we didn't get frustrated with it. I think we encourage one another. They've all tried to do the right things and we got better as the game went on and if it wasn't for one or two good saves from their 'keeper, we would have nicked it."
Norwich boss Bryan Gunn was pleased with the attitude of his players, with the Canaries now being unbeaten in the two matches he has been in charge.
He said: "The team have shown great battling qualities. I am sure if we keep up that level of performance we will move up the table away from the precarious position we are still in."
“I was disappointed with the goal we lost - it was a long, hopeful ball into our penalty area and our defence had been defending well before that, so it was a lack of ownership to go and attack the ball. But the lads kept battling, didn't let their heads go down and I was delighted when Jonathans Grounds got on the end of a cross and finished it. I thought at that stage we looked like we were going to be very strong and go forward and win the game, but Doncaster are a good footballing side and they continued to play and they continued to make chances. Some resolute defending and some great goalkeeping from David Marshall have seen us through for the point. I thought it was a great performance by the lads. They stuck by what we asked them to do.

Birmingham in for Mills?
News continues to circulate in the press that Birmingham City are set to make a move for Rovers defender Matthew Mills. Whilst Rovers chairman John Ryan has said on several occasions that Rovers are not intending to let any of their leading players leave the club, the reported offer of £1.5 million may be enough to make Rovers consider the offer, if it is actually made. Late last week O'Driscoll stated that no clubs had approached Rovers about any of their players, so it looks as though it will be a last-minute move if it happens. Birmingham boss Alex McLeish was apparently in the crowd on Friday evening to watch Mills.
