Rovers
included new loan signing Jason Shakell for their first home game of the
new season. Shackell partnered Adam Lockwood in the cenre of defence,
with Sam Hird dropping to the substitutes' bench. Apart from that, it
was more or less the expected side named by Sean O'Driscoll. Rovers got off to a bright start, with John Spicer going close with a dipping shot in the first ten minutes. Preston showed their strength, however - and it was pure strength that enabled them to take the lead. Former Rovers loan striker Chris Brown powered straight through the middle of the Rovers defence in the 28th minute to steer his shot past a diving Neil Sullivan from ten yards, and Rovers were showing little threat in front of goal. The second half began much in the vein of the first, although after ten minutes, Rovers upped the tempo and fortunes started to change. A superb, frantic last 15 minutes saw Rovers equalise when Adam Lockwood fired home after the ball ricocheted around the Preston goalmouth, and then Rovers had a number of other good opportunites to take all three points, with James Hayter being particularly unlucky when he latched on to the ball after the keepar could only parry the ball, but his shot cannoned off the post and out to safety. |

Shackell
signs on loan |
![]() |
Doncaster
Rovers have signed Wolverhampton Wanderers' centre half Jason Shackell
on a month's loan to provide much needed cover in the Rovers defence.
Shackell was drafted straight into Sean O'Driscoll's squad for yesterday's
home game against Preston North End. He joined Wolves from Norwich in 2008 and played 13 first team games, but went back to Norwich on loan for the last three months of the 2008/09 season. The Wolves website indicates that the player is available for loan or transfer - and whilst he returned to Wolves for pre-season training, he recently earned the praise of their Development Coach Steve Weaver for his general attitude and level of performance. Rovers have given no indication whether Shackell has been signed purely as a short-term loan or with a view to a full transfer. He has been allocated the number 20 shirt at Doncaster Rovers and is available for selection up to, and including, Rovers' game against West Bromwich Albion on September 15th. |

We
begin our review of former Doncaster Rovers players scoring goals this
weekend in League Two, where Ricky Ravenhill fired home his first goal
for an impressive Notts County as they won away at Macclesfield 4-0. To
have a goal difference of +9 after just two matches is impressive; whilst
it may well not continue like that, County and their new financial backers
must fance their chances of promotion this season. Less good news from
that match came with ex-Rovers skipper Graeme Lee limping off after just
half an hour of play due to a groin injury. It now looks as though Graeme
will require surgery on the injury; County boss Ian McParland had hoped
Lee could play through the pain barrier in the short term. Also on the scoresheet was midfielder Paul Green, who scored for Derby County in their 3-2 defeat at Scunthorpe United. Back in League Two, former Rovers midfielder John McGrath scored one of Burton Albion's goals in their 5-2 win over Morecambe, which gave the Brewers their first victory in the Football League. In the Blue Squre Premier, ex-youth team striker Michael Rankine scored one of York's goals in their 2-0 home win over Forest Green Rovers. In the Blue Square North, Mark Hume scored the only goal of the game as Eastwood Town won at Harrogate Town. Andy Campbell scored Bradford Park Avenue's equaliser at Buxton in the UniBond Premier Division in the 88th minute, just a minute after Buxton had taken the lead. In the UniBond First Division (South), Ben Saunders scored one of Grantham's goals in their 5-1 win at Market Drayton Town. Our review ends in Ireland, where Peter Hynes scored for Shelbourne in their 1-1 home draw against Finn Harps. Whilst dropping a point, it does extend Shels' lead at the top of the League of Ireland First Division to three points ahead of Waterford United, with 21 games played. |

Rovers
v Preston North End |
![]() |
Doncaster
Rovers play their first home game of the season this afternoon when they
entertain Preston North End. After making a number of changes to the team
for Tuesday's Carling Cup game, we expect that Sean O'Driscoll will revert
to a side similar to the one that lined up against Watford last Saturday. Rovers have injury concerns over defenders Byron Webster (ankle), Adam Lockwood (foot) and Brian Stock (back), but Sean O'Driscoll is hopeful of including all three in his squad today. Rovers could also include new signing Quinton Fortune in their squad after receiving international clearance during the week - the former South African international may well have to settle for a place on the bench though. Preston boss Alan Irvine has a tricky balancing act to perform today. After making a winning start to their campaign last weekend, he made seven changes for their Carling Cup game against Morecambe, with North End winning that match 5-1, with a number of those players now pressing for a place this afternoon, including former Rovers striker Chris Brown. Irvine said: "They have given me big decisions to make at the weekend and selecting a team will be extremely difficult." The only injury concern that Preston appear to have is that of Jon Parkin, who missed Tuesday's match after picking up a knock last weekend. |

O'Driscoll
expects tough match |
![]() |
With
Preston North End completing a "double" over Rovers last season
and an unbeaten start to the new campaign, Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll
is expecting another tough game this afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium. O'Driscoll said: "After watching their game against Bristol City they are the same sort of side as last season. They are nicely balanced, pass the ball really well and they've got two mobile front men. So they've got all the ingredients needed to do very well. The four teams that I've watched this year - Preston, Bristol City, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough - have all impressed me and I don't think you will go far wrong if you name all of them in your top eight." |

Fortune
cleared to play |

New
Rovers signing Quinton Fortune is set to make his first appearance for
Rovers today after the club received international clearance for the player.
Fortune has missed the first two matches this season whilst waiting for
the paperwork to be completed - and now he has to force his way into the
side. Sean O'Driscoll said of his new signing: "I'm now keen to try and get him up to speed in the Championship. He's already watched a couple of games on television and said what a tough division this is. He's a good character and has a good manner about him. He gives us something we haven't got. I wouldn't see him playing week in, week out, but he adds to the mix. He gives us a physical presence in midfield where we have some nice technical players, but might be a bit lightweight, and he's a really good character." Fortune required international clearance for his transfer after playing for Belgian side Tubize last season. |

FA Council overturned. After irregularities were alleged in the original
vote between John Ryan and Barnsley director Barry Taylor, Ryan launched

yesterday that Taylor had kept his position on the council by 9 votes

Doncaster
Rovers have been drawn against Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur in the
second round of the Carling Cup. The draw was made last night after the
final first round match was played, with Rovers being drawn out for the
penultimate match of the draw against the beaten finalists of last seson.
The only clubs not included in the second round draw are those Premiership
clubs who are involved in European competition (Manchester United as well
as Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Fulham and Everton) this
season, so Rovers face possibly the toughest draw possible in this round. The matches are scheduled to be played in the week commencing Monday, 24th August. |

O'Driscoll
- my best chance of Premiership is with Rovers |
![]() |
Sean
O'Driscoll has admitted that his best chances of managing a club in the
Premier League is with Doncaster Rovers. Although Roberto Martinez has
made the step up from Swansea to manage Wigan in the Premiership this
season, such chances are rare. O'Driscoll said: "The occasions where lower league managers are given the opportunity to manage a Premier League club are few and far between. If that's the case, taking Doncaster Rovers into the Premiership would most seemingly be the most likely option." "Managing at any level is difficult, no more so than in the Premiership. However, any ambitions to reach the Premiership must be based on sound, and sustainable, financial business plans." Even so, O'Driscoll has targeted survival in the Championship as his main priority this season, despite finishing comfortably in mid-table last time around. With the likes of Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion to face this season, the standard is probably higher than last term. He continued: "The initial aim is to retain our Championship status once again. Some very strong, experienced sides have come down from the Premiership and some very strong, well-backed clubs have come up from League One. Once that target is realised, others become a possibility." |

A
54th minute goal by James Coppinger was enough to send Doncaster Rovers
through to the second round of the Carling Cup last night, but they certainly
rode their luck at times. Coppinger's goal was Rovers' first shot on target
- and the Rovers goal led a charmed life in the first half as Notts County
hit the woodwork on no less than three occasions. The goal may have taken
54 minutes to come, but it was worth the wait, as it finished off a superb
move by Rovers, with the fianl pass to Coppinger coming from Lewis Guy. As expected, Rovers made a number of changes to their starting line-up as Sean O'Driscoll gave other players a chance of first team football, although he named a strong substitutes' bench for the game. He said ahead of the game: "I want to put out a strong side and a side that is as balanced as it possibly can be." Byron Webster played after his international clearance came through, but midfielder Quinton Fortune will have to wait for his Rovers debut. |

O'Driscoll
- we were lucky |
![]() |
Rovers
boss Sean O'Driscoll conceded that his side were rather fortunate to win
last night's Carling Cup game against Notts County at Meadow Lane. He said: "To say that we were extremely fortunate is a massive understatement but I was pleased at the way we stuck at it. County could have been 4-0 up at half-time but at the finish we could have ended up winning 4-0. Sometimes in football 15 minutes can hurt and harm you but we managed to convey the message at half-time and it enabled us to get organised. The players all knew they could do a lot better and I thought they were excellent in the second period." Rovers lost to Notts County at the same stage of the competition exactly twelve months ago, so O'Driscoll was happy that his side progressed, even though the clubs are two divisions apart. County boss Ian McParland commented on the game: "We were brilliant in the first half. In fact I thought we were better in that period than we were when we won 5-0 on Saturday. Rovers did to us what we did to them for a period at the start of the second half but we got back into it and Lee Hughes had two good chances. On another day he would have put them in the net. I thought Neal Bishop might have had a penalty at the end and I was a bit disappointed the referee didn't give it." |

Notts
County v Rovers |
Rovers
boss Sean O'Driscoll will be waiting for confirmation as to whether international
clearance has been received for Byron Webster and Quinton Fortune before
naming his side for this evening's Carling Cup first round match at Notts
County. We expect that O'Driscoll will make a number of changes to the
starting eleven in order to give other players in his squad a run-out,
although he will remember Rovers went out to the same opposition at the
same stage last season, so will be keen not to repeat that experience. Rovers will be missing Steve Brooker, Jos van Nieuwstadt and Sean McDaid, all of who continue to recover from operations, but James Chambers and James O'Connor made successful comebacks after injury on Saturday, and are set to play again this evening. Notts County, whose confidence will be heightened by their opening day 5-0 win over Bradford City, will be looking to keep their good start going this evening. Boss Ian McParland's side will probably be looking to score their goals through former Rovers target Lee Hughes, who bagged a hat-trick on his County debut on Saturday. However, midfielder Ben Davies, who scored their opening goal on Saturday, is unlikely to feature after suffering a groin injury which forced his substitution at half time. County will include former Rovers midfielder Ricky Ravenhill in their midfield, but Graeme Lee is likely to be missing due to a groin injury. Ravenhill will be playing against Rovers for the first time since leaving three years ago, but he's looking forward to the game. He said: "It's the first time I've played against them since I left, so I'm definitely looking forward to it. I had a brilliant time at Doncaster, with two promotions on the trot. I was there for about five years and they were good times in my career. But that was a few years ago now and I'll be doing all I can to help us beat them." It's the proverbial banana skin for Rovers this evening - they ought to win, but who knows how County will fare, with the inspiration of Sven Goran Ericksson and the backing of new owners spurring them on? Ravenhill warned: "Whatever the result, we have to give it our all. We're not scared to play anybody, especially when we play the way we know we can do like we did against Bradford. Hopefully we can produce another good performance tonight and keep improving as the season goes on." The match kicks off at 7.45pm. |

Rovers'

the Rovers side shown in their 1-1 draw at Watford on Saturday. He said: "I thought we were the better side in the first half and they shaded the second. We set off well and it was a bit against the run of play when they took the lead, but we showed good character, something that we're going to need to do all season. At certain points of the game, especially when we went a goal down, we'd have probably settled for a point, while at other times you think that you've a chance of all three. Doncaster
Rovers were left to wonder what might have been when they were denied
what appeared to be a winning goal just before the hour mark. As it was,
both sides had to settle for a point each on a sweltering afternoon at
Vicarage Road. With the match officials unable to determine whether goalkeeper
Scott Loach had saved Dean Shields' shot on the line, or whether it had
crossed over the line, the goal could not be given. Boss Sean O'Driscoll
was philosophical about the event, which would have given Rovers a dream
start to their Championship campaign. He said: "We've got a tape of the game and it's clearly over the line. It's a difficult one to give. The linesman was 40 yards away and the referee's in line with it, but until you get cameras on the goalline it's one of those that you've got to take on the chin. I don't think you can blame anybody. I don't think anybody can actually see. I don't think even our players would be, if they're honest, totally sure. I don't think we can hark on about it. I think it would be a bit churlish to blame a linesman who is 40 yards away and a referee who's got a million and one other things to look at. I think he's in the right position to see what's going on in the box, but, unfortunately, not in the right position to see if the ball's gone over the line." Rovers put out a side very reminiscent of the one they put out last season, with only John Oster, the last of four pre-season signings, making it onto the pitch yesterday. Dumbuya had to settle for a place on the bench, with all other new signings not making it into the match day squad. Watford took the lead in the 27th minute when Rovers failed to clear a free kick from just outside the penalty area, with new signing Danny Graham tapping home from two yards out. Rovers were back on level terms eleven minutes later when Brian Stock clipped a ball towards the end of the penalty area, and James Hayter got in front of the defender to send a looping header over Loach from 16 yards. |

What
the managers said |
![]() |
Looking
back at yesterday's game, here's some snippets of what the two managers
said in their post-match press conference: Sean O'Driscoll: "Two sides worked hard without much quality. I'm sure Malky would say the same. I think we can both play a lot better than we showed. (There were) difficult conditions, it was extremely hot, and the game was in fits and starts throughout the 90 minutes." Malky Mackay, who was banned from the touchline due to a touchline ban carried over from the end of last season, said: "I was pleased with the effort in the second half. They went out and were really positive. It was a very hot day and you're playing against a team who try to keep the ball and like to keep the ball. What I asked them to do in the second half was really press them and go out them and push forward and I was delighted with the effort in the second half and the way that with five, 10 minutes to go we were still pressing and pushing on. I think that's testament to the five weeks of pre-season that we did." |

Since various statements were made by, or on behalf of the player last week, McCormack has been insisting in recent days that he is happy to stay at Cardiff, saying: “I don’t know where those quotes have been dug up from. Everyone seems to think I don’t care about Cardiff and I want to leave, but that’s not the case. I’m happy here, so is my fiancee, and we’re looking for a new house. I’m happy and not planning to go anywhere. I’m upset at these reports, but everyone knows the situation. I had a conversation with the chairman and said that if a Premier League club came in for me, I’d like the chance to speak to them. There was no transfer request.” McCormack seems likely to be included in Cardiff's squad for this afternoon's match. |

Kinnear
offered Toon job? |
![]() |
Former
Doncaster Rovers manager Joe Kinnear has claimed that Newcastle United
owner Mike Ashley offered him a job at St James' Park just two weeks ago.
Kinnear was forced to stand down as manager in February after having a
triple heart bypass operation, with Alan Shearer taking the reins for
the final few matches of the season. However, with the change in ownership
of Newcastle still pending, no new managerial appointment has yet been
made. Kinnear has told Ashley that he will not be able to return to work until the autumn as he continues to recover from the heart surgery. Kinnear said: "I have been offered a two-year contract and it is something I am just mulling over at the present time. I have told Mike that I am not going to go back to football for at least another three months and then we will look at the situation then. I could be back. There is that possibilility. But at the same time from now until then they could quite easily employ someone else. That's how the situation lies at the moment. But should that happen I will be on the look-out elsewhere and as we all know the only time you do get asked to take these positions is when someone else loses their job." |

Doncaster
Rovers chairman John Ryan has his eyes on a play-off place this season,
despite the critics predicting that Rovers will be battling away at the
bottom of the table again. Ryan said: "I think that we are going to do very well. Everyone is saying that just because we are Doncaster Rovers that we should be looking at the bottom end of the table, but I don't believe that. I think that we are a quality side and we should be looking at the top – why not a play-off spot? "I know that we've lost Richie Wellens but that's life and I've got every confidence in the manager that he'll produce another winning team." |

Two
ex-Rovers sign for Penney |
![]() |
Two
former Doncaster Rovers players have signed short term contracts at Oldham
Athletic, just two days before the new season starts. First up is striker Darren Byfield, who has been at the club on trials during the summer. Byfield also spent part of last season on loan at the Latics under previous boss John Sheridan. Also joining Oldham on a short-term deal is defender Peter Gilbert, who played for Rovers for a month on loan from Sheffield Wednesday. Gilbert has been on trials at Southend United and Coventry City, but Latics boss Dave Penney has moved quickly to sign him. Both players are likely to be included in the squad for tomorrow's opening game of the season against Stockport County. |

Two
former Doncaster Rovers players - Ben Muirhead and Matt Caudwell - turned
out as trialists for Retford United on Saturday in a bid to win a contract
with the UniBond Premier League club. Muirhead had been on trials at Altrincham
earlier in the summer, and was expected to miss all of this season as
at the end of last season he was reported to need an operation to resolve
a knee injury. Caudwell was released by Matlock Town at the end of last season. |

signs for Grays |

Ex-Rovers
midfielder Adriano Rigoglioso has signed for Blue Square Premier club
Grays Athletic. He became one of an amazing nine players to sign for Grays
on Wednesday - and the drama at the club was not finished then. Only hours
after making the nine signings, manager Craig Edwards was reported to
have left the club - it later transpired that he, and assistant Steve
Browne had been sacked. Former Rovers assistant manager Alan Lewer has
been brought in as caretaker manager and will take charge of the team
tomorrow for their opening game of the season against Chester City. |

Webster
is O'Driscoll's second signing |

Doncaster
Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll made his second signing yesterday when central
defender Byron Webster penned a two year contract after impressing whilst
on trials during the summer. Rovers have stated that they have paid an
"undisclosed fee" to Czech side FK SIAD Most, who signed him
from Harrogate Town in 2007. His other clubs have been York City and Whitby
Town. Born in Leeds, he joined Leeds United's youth set-up before making
the switch to York. Webster has been allocated the number 23 shirt for the coming season. |

Yesterday
afternoon, Rovers announced that they had made their third signing of
the summer when full-back Mustapha Dumbuya joined the club on a one year
contract. The 21 year old is the third player to be snapped up by Sean
O'Driscoll after impressing the Rovers management whilst playing on trials
during the summer. Previously with Grays Athletic, Rovers are giving him
his first chance at Football League level. Mustapha will wear the number
24 shirt this season. We wish both new signings all the very best for their future career at Doncaster Rovers. |

Reading
FC confirmed yesterday afternoon that they had completed the transfer
of Doncaster Rovers defender Matthew Mills after he had passed their medicaL
examination and they had agreed personal terms. Mills has signed a three
year contract at the Madjeski Stadium, and becomes new boss Brendan Rodgers'
first signing of the summer. The transfer fee is termed as undisclosed,
but local press in Reading suggest that Reading will pay an intial £1.5
million, which will rise to £2 million if they get promoted. We would like to wish Matthew all the best for his future career and thank him for all of his efforts whilst playing for Doncaster Rovers. |

Chaos
at Cambridge as boss walks out, then chairman resigns! |
![]() |
The
situation at Blue Square Premier club Cambridge United is hardly ideal
for preparation for their first match of the season on Saturday. New boss
Martin Ling walked out on the club on Tuesday after just nine days in
charge due to "irreconcilable differences" with chairman George
Rolls. Earlier in the summer, former Rovers midfielder Gary Brabin resigned
as manager at the club due to clashes with the chairman, with ex-Rovers
midfielder Paul Carden taking charge of the side until Ling was appointed.
We presume that Carden will again be handed the managership on a caretaker
basis after he agreed a new player/assistant manager role only a couple
of weeks ago. The drama at the club deepened yesterday when Cambridge confirmed that chairman George Rolls had quit the club - whether that will lead to either Brabin or Ling returning to the club will remain to be seen! |

which ends a two year stay at Bristol City. The 29-year old agreed personal
terms yesterday, just 24 hours after Bristol City accepted Coventry's
bid for the player. Both clubs have declined to confirm the transfer fee
paid, but McIndoe has signed a two year contract at Coventry. City boss Gary Johnson commented: "Sometimes players need new ambitions. I personally feel this is the right time for Michael." Coventry become McIndoe's ninth club - he began at Luton Town before moving to Hereford United, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Derby County, Barnsley and Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving to Ashton Gate two summers ago, since when he made 98 appearances for the Robins. |

Walker
stays with Bluebirds |
![]() |
Barrow
striker Jason Walker is staying at the club, despite impressing whilst
on trials at Doncaster Rovers. Rovers elected not to make an offer for
the prolific marksman, which has delighted Barrow boss Dave Bayliss, as
it means he will have Walker's services for their opening game of the
season on Saturday. However, Walker's scoring exploits have alterted a number of other clubs, so he may well not be staying at Barrow for much longer. Their local press suggest that Carlisle attended Barrow's match against Morecambe on Saturday, with scouts from a number of other clubs also reported to have been in the crowd. Bayliss said of the situation: “Jason couldn’t have done more as a player, scoring two goals in two games and he played really well by all accounts. It’s a shame he has had his head turned by Doncaster and nothing has really happened. We’re delighted that he’s staying. We wanted to keep Jason all along and said if didn’t work out he’d be welcomed back with open arms. It’s a double edged sword, we hope he stays but hope he goes for his own good but for the time being he’s our player and he’ll continue to play and help us along the way.” “We’ve had enquiries, another Championship club wanted him to go and train with them but we’re not going to do that any more. We’ve been fair to Jay giving him two weeks at Doncaster but now there is a week to go before the start of the season and we’ve got to start looking out for ourselves. If they want to sign him they can come and watch him and make an offer. I spoke to a couple of people from league clubs who were here today and I’m sure his stock has risen after today’s game. He’s our player for the foreseeable future, Jason knows that and he’s not been bitter, he knows we’ve done everything to help him. He plays a massive part in our team and all the players are delighted he’s back, he’s our player and he will continue to be until we receive an offer for him.” |

McIndoe
Coventry bound? |

Former
Rovers winger Michael McIndoe appears to be about to join Coventry City
following Bristol City's acceptance of a bid from the Sky Blues. A move
to Sheffield United came to nothing a couple of weeks ago when Sheffield
United pulled out of the deal after having their bid accepted, but this
move looks more likely to happen. Coventry boss Chris Coleman said: "I know it has come out that we have agreed a fee with Bristol City but we are yet to agree other things, so the deal is far from being done. I am hoping, praying and fingers are crossed because we owe it to the supporters and the boys we have got who have done a great job over the last six weeks." |

Three
ex-Rovers players arrested |
![]() |
Saturday
was not a good day for former Rovers winger Craig Nelthorpe. Firstly,
he was sent off whilst playing for York, and then he managed to get himself
arrested in an altercation outside a Subway food outlet in Clifford Street
in the early hours of Sunday morning. Also arrested along with Nelthorpe
were former Rovers goalkeeper Michael Ingham and ex-youth team striker
Michael Rankine, and York's new signing Michael Gash. The four, who had
just left the Gallery nightclub next door, are understood to have been
involved in a "disagreement" with two adult males. The incident
apparently escalated, with the two males being subject to a 'serious assault',
which led to one of them having to go to York hospital with facial injuries. The four footballers were arrested and were kept in custody at York police station overnight. The police statement the following morning read: “Following the arrest and subsequent interview of four York City footballers, all have now been released on bail whilst police enquiries continue. One of the injured parties was taken to York Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning where he received treatment for facial injuries. He was released later that day. We can not comment further at this stage.” |

Former
Doncaster Rovers loan left back Peter Gilbert has been a busy man in the
last few days. On Friday, he impressed Southend United's boss Paul Brush
when playing for Southend in their game against Stevenage Borough, with
Brush now considering whether to make him an offer. Brush said after the
game of whether he would make a move for Gilbert: “It’s certainly
something for us to ponder. His passing was of Championship quality which
is what he is and he did well.” However, on Sunday, Gilbert turned out for Coventry City in their pre-season game against Everton. Coventry boss Chris Coleman commented: “Peter has come in and he was tired because he played 90 minutes for Southend on Friday night, but he acquitted himself very well and we are just having a look at each other, so there is nothing concrete in it.” |

Mills
on his way south |
![]() |
The
absence of Matt Mills from virtually all of the pre-season games this
summer made most Rovers supporters very suspicious that he would not be
at the club for the start of the season. Those suspicions were confirmed
this afternoon when news emerged that Rovers have accepted an as yet unconfirmed
bid from Championship club Reading for the player, with Mills currently
down in Reading to discuss personal terms. News reports suggest that the transfer fee will be in the region of £2 million - whether that is cash up front or the usual complicated instalments version often seen these days, is still subject to confirmation. Mills joined Rovers last summer after a successful time on loan from Manchester City, with the transfer fee understood to be around £300,000. Reading FC's Director of Football, Nick Hammond, has confirmed that the club have agreed a deal in principle with Rovers, whichs is subject to the completion of a medical and personal terms. If the transfer figures are true, it will give Rovers a healthy profit in only 12 months (although there is a sell-on amount due to Manchester City), but even so, it hardly gives Rovers the ideal preparation ahead of the new Championship season, which begins on Saturday. At the moment, Rovers have just Adam Lockwood and Sam Hird as fit centre backs, with Jos van Nieuwstadt still recovering from an operation; he will be another two weeks before he resumes training. Rovers fans will be hoping that the club have sufficient contingency plans in place to make some signings to replace the seven players who have now departed since the end of last season. We will let you have more details as they become available. |

Former
Rovers striker Gareth Taylor was on hand to score for Wrexham in their
pre-season game against Huddersfield Town. Taylor equalised Huddersfield's
early goal by Theo Robinson, but the Welsh side eventually went down to
a 3-1 home defeat, as the two leagues difference eventually took its toll. It was not so good news for ex-Rovers winger Craig Nelthorpe, who was sent off as York City crashed to a 3-1 defeat against Halifax Town. York boss Martin Foyle said: "It was a big disappointment but we've learnt more about the players. Craig Nelthorpe's led with his arm, it is a sending off and I'm not going to protect that because I can't." Ex-Rovers youth team striker Michael Rankine scored the York City goal. |

Another

The
odds must be on ex-Rovers winger Michael McIndoe staying at Bristol City
for long must be lengthening as news came out yesterday that another bid
for his services has been accepted by Bristol City. Robins boss Gary Johnson
was remaining tight-lipped about the identity of the club who have made
a bid for McIndoe, but it is understood to be a Championship club, with
Coventry City have been linked with the player. Johnson commented: "We can't say too much but we have had a bid from a club and it has been accepted. Nothing's done yet but Michael is talking terms with them." Also likely to be leaving Bristol is striker Lee Trundle, who has found his first team opportunities limited since his big money move from Swansea. |

![]() |
Rovers
boss Sean O'Driscoll has declared that he is happy with the progress made
by his squad during the pre-season games, and thinks that they are now
ready to start the new season. Trialists Byron Webster, Mustapha Dumbuya, John Oster and Quinton Fortune were all included in the squad. Of their prospects of joining the Rovers playing staff, O'Driscoll commented: "They wouldn't be on the pitch if they weren't in the frame. It would be pointless playing them otherwise. Whether we do anything is down to the other complicated things in football. We've been really pleased with the way they have fitted in and their good characters. If you say that they are on trial, then they have passed their trial with flying colours." O'Driscoll confirmed that defender Jos van Nieuwstadt will miss the beginning of the season after having a hernia operation. He said: "He's had his staples out today and could start running again this week. I would imagine that it would be between a week and two weeks before he resumes training." |

![]() |
The
final pre-season game for Rovers ended in a 1-1 draw against Premiership
newboys Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Mark Wilson rifling in a shot from
the edge of the penalty area just after the break. The transfer rumours surrounding Matt Mills will doubtlessly continue after he was again omitted from the squad for the match. Whilst trialist Byron Webster was given another start at centre back, most would have thought that, unless he is not fit, Mills would have made an appearance some time during the game. Rovers' best chance in the first half fell to defender Sam Hird, but his header was well saved by Wolves goalkeeper Hennessey. Rovers made nine changes at half time and Rovers gained the upper hand in the game, with Hennessey denying Lewis Guy before Mark Wilson put Rovers ahead. Wolves drew level after an hour's play when Matt Jarvis's shot gave Sullivan no chance of making a save. Rovers (first half): Sullivan, O`Connor, Hird, Webster, Chambers, Stock, Spicer, Woods, Shiels, Hayter, Heffernan Rovers (second half): Sullivan (Smith 84), Dumbaye, Webster (Hird 76), Lockwood, Roberts, Coppinger, Fortune, Guy, Oster, Wilson, Clark Wolves: Hennessey, Foley, Berra, Craddock, Ward (Elokobi 66), Halford (Keogh 57), Henry, Jones (Edwards 57), Jarvis, Milijas (Surman 66), Ebanks-Blake (Vokes 79). Jason
Walker, who has been on trials at Doncaster Rovers, returned to Barrow
to play in their pre-season game against Morecambe, and scored the only
goal of the game. Whilst he has returned to Barrow, it seems a move to
Rovers has still not been ruled out, but after playing two games for Rovers,
FA regulations state that he cannot play any more times unless he completes
a transfer. Bluebirds boss Dave Bayliss said: “Jason is back training with us now and he is back as our player. He has been to Doncaster, scored two goals in two games and done really well, but they haven’t made a bid for him. He’s played the two games for them and as far as we are concerned he will be in the starting team on Saturday and at Cambridge (for the league opener) next week.” He continued: "We don’t need to sell him and we don’t want to sell him, but if they come in with a good offer then you don’t want to stop the lad going into the Championship. But that’s down the line, as far as we are concerned now, he will play at Cambridge.” |

striker Richard Offiong is in no rush to leavd Hamilton Academical after
turning down a transter fto Colchester United last week. The move fell
through at the last minute, although his former Accies teammate Joel Thomas
completed his transfer to the U's. Offiong said of the proposed move: "I saw what was on offer and just couldn't agree personal terms. I'm not in a rush to move, to be honest. I'm enjoying my football at Hamilton. But if the right move does come I'll have to sit down and discuss it with my family and the people who represent me. I just don't think that one was the right move for me. The club just put it straight and said they had accepted a bid but it was up to me whether I took it. There was no pressure from them. on loan at Notts County. Adkins said: "Jonathan Forte has got everything, as I keep saying. That's why I bought him. He's a young boy, so we've got to let him mature. Rovers
v Wolves |
![]() |
Rovers
play their only home pre-season game of the summer this afternoon when
they entertain newly promoted Premiership side Wolverhampton Wanderers,
with the match kicking off at 3pm. The match has been organised as a testimonial
match for Rovers' Director of Football, Mickey Walker, to celebrate his
ten years at the club. Whilst most pre-season matches are half-hearted affairs, Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has promised that it will "not be a typical testimonial game." McCarthy said: "The clubs agreed that this is not going to be a tippy-tappy affair but a very important part of our respective preparations for the new season. We are just a fortnight away from our big kick off in the Premiership and Rovers start next week. Both Sean O'Driscoll and I want to step things up for the new season. We're here with our best possible team because we are only a couple of games away from our return to the Premiership and that provides Rovers with a good test too." Paying tribute to Walker, the Wolves boss commented: "I honestly can't remember the last time I went to a benefit game but Mickey has been in the game a long, long time and this is a deserved reward for the loyalty he has shown to Rovers. The guy is very personable with people and has got loads of contacts. People will always help him - and vice versa - and you can't get enough of that in this game." "I was delighted that Donny consolidated their place in the Championship," he continued. "I'm a Yorkshire lad myself and I like the club. Their story has been a great success story and long may it continue. "But don't get the wrong message - they may be a very friendly club but this is a bloody hard place to come and play. Rovers are a good footballing side, very well organised and will be confident after the way they ended last season." |

Rovers
team news |
In
the final pre-season game for Rovers, some signs of the side that will
line up for next weekend's opening fixture against Watford should be seen
this afternoon for the match against Wolves. Defenders Matt Mills, James
O'Connor and James Chambers are expected to make a return after injury,
but Sean O'Driscoll has also stated that trialists Mustapha Dumbaya and
Byron Webster will be given another chance to show what they can do this
afternoon. The appearance of the three other trialists used this summer
is more doubtful - to quote the Rovers boss, "Quinton and John will
only play if there is a possibility that we could take them on board.
No disrespect to them, but tomorrow's game is the last game before we
start our league campaign so we'd like all the contracted players that
have got a chance at Watford, to be involved. At this moment we are just
chatting to them and their representatives. Both have got other options." Young striker Jason Walker looks as though he may turn out for Barrow this afternoon, judging by the hints given by O'Driscoll, suggesting that there may be other "irons in the fire" as far as bringing new strikers to the club are concerned. O'Driscoll said: "He's come in and done really well; he's got better and better as he's got used to the things we do. We've spoken to Barrow and kept them informed of the situation and they have told us the sort of financial deal that they would be looking at. It is difficult to look at the bigger picture because what I don't want to do is to end up doing one thing and then not being able to do one or two others. I think that there are other areas of the team which take priority over bringing in Jason. That's not to say that we won't try to do it." Admission prices for the match will be £10 for adults and £5 for concessions. So far, 1,802 tickets have been sold. Please remember that if you have not bought a ticket, you will need to buy one from the ticket office, so please arrive at the ground early enough. Only the East Stand will be open this afternoon for Rovers fans, with the Wolves fans being in the North Stand. |
