Joe Laidlaw
midfield
1976-1978

Joe Laidlaw was a no-nonsense, tough-tackling midfielder who always seemed to relish the game. As a result he was a great favourite with the fans at the many clubs at which he played. He began his career as an apprentice at Middlesbrough, making his League debut at the age of 17 and playing under Stan Anderson, later to manage Rovers.
In July 1972 he signed for Carlisle United and was top scorer in his first season, helping the club avoid relegation to Division Three. In 1973-74 he was an ever present as the Cumbrian side gained a surprise promotion to Division One, a league they led for a few weeks before slumping to relegation. Laidlaw was their top scorer in Division One, and he played in a side which included three more future Rovers players- Chris Balderstone, Bill Green and Bobby Owen.
In 1976 Laidlaw took the opportunity to link up with Anderson again when he signed for Rovers, and he was soon awarded the captaincy of the side. He scored on his League debut for Rovers, a 2-2 draw at Southport, and went on to score seven times for a talented team which under-achieved in Division Four. After the departure of Peter Kitchen, Laidlaw was top scorer with 13 goals in the disappointing 1977-78 season and although he retained his place after Anderson's departure in November 1978, it was clear that he didn't figure in new manager Billy Bremner's long term plans.
Laidlaw moved on to Portsmouth in June 1979 and helped the club gain promotion from Division Four that season. He then moved on to Hereford United in December 1980 and spent one and a half seasons at Edgar Street before finishing his career with Mansfield Town. Joe's son, Jamie, who was born in Doncaster in 1977, has played at Conference level for Yeovil Town and Farnborough and Joe himself continues to play recreational football in the Portsmouth area, where he works as a roofer.
